Rolex Precision
Precision is Rolex's name for the tier below chronometer. A Precision watch left the factory with an adjusted movement and a waterproof Oyster case, without the Neuchâtel or Kew certificate, at a price that reflected the difference. The designation begins as dial text on two 1937 references, runs through the small manual-wind Oysters of the 1940s and 1950s, and survives as a grade label on the Air-King until 2006. Reading it correctly is most of what it does for a collector holding an unfamiliar dial: PRECISION, EXTRA PRECISION, and SUPER PRECISION are regulation grades, and none of the three is a chronometer rating.

Rolex ran the Precision names alongside the Perpetual from the beginning. The automatic Oyster Perpetual arrived in 1933 on the Bubbleback platform, and the manual-wind Oyster Precision arrived four years later as the lower-priced parallel track. Manual-wind Precision production ended in the mid-1980s, by which point the Datejust and the automatic Oyster Perpetual had absorbed the non-sport catalog. The dial text outlived the manual movements: the Air-King carried Precision and Super Precision on automatic calibers from 1953 through the 14000M.
|}

What "Precision" meant
Before Precision there was Prima. Aegler graded its movements Prima, Extra Prima, and Ultra Prima through the 1920s and early 1930s, each name a regulation standard applied to broadly the same architecture. By the mid-1930s the vocabulary had shifted to Precision, Extra Precision, and Super Precision, with the same logic underneath: better adjustment, more positions, tighter rates, all of it sitting below the chronometer certificate.

At the case-in-hand level the useful consequence is that a Precision dial rules a chronometer rating out. A 1937 buyer choosing an Oyster Precision over an Oyster Perpetual Chronometer received the same Oyster case, the same screw-down crown, and the same warranty against dust and water, minus the certificate and the price that came with it.

The relationship between grade text and actual adjustment is looser than the vocabulary suggests. The Air-King 6552 runs a Cal. 1030 adjusted to chronometer standard and still reads Super Precision on the dial. Marcus Siems puts the distinction plainly: "in contrast to other Oyster Perpetuals these Air-Kings weren't Chronometer certified and marked Super Precision." The words describe what Rolex was willing to certify and sell, and the certification is what the buyer paid for.

The originating references (1937)
The antique-era timeline in Colin A. White's The Vintage Rolex Field Manual (Morning Tundra) records 1937 as a three-reference year and sets the launch down in one line: "Launch of the Rolex Precision (refs. 3003 & 3004) and Centergraph (ref. 3642)." The 3003 and 3004 open the Precision line; the 3642 Centergraph is a single-button Oyster chronograph and belongs to a different lineage.

The references below are the small manual-wind Oysters that occupied the Precision segment through the 1930s and 1940s. Several print a Rolex sub-brand name on the dial where the grade word would sit, and the 4220 is the one whose own catalog position is recorded as Precision-line. What they share is the architecture: hermetic Oyster case, Hunter-derived hand-wound caliber, no chronometer certificate. The Oyster & Bubbleback hub carries the same references inside the full 1926–1953 Oyster chronology.

The line continues past this table into references BezelBase has not yet catalogued. The 6426 of the 1970s runs the same editorial logic as the 3003 of 1937: manual-wind Oyster, adjusted movement, no chronometer certificate, OYSTER PRECISION on the dial.

Precision and Super Precision on the Air-King
The Air-King is where the designation ran longest and where the two grades are easiest to date. The originating 1945 generation reads PRECISION because the Hunter caliber was never chronometer-rated and Precision was the highest text available to it. From 1953 the automatic Air-Kings read SUPER PRECISION. From the early 1960s the text reverts to PRECISION or disappears from the dial entirely. The switch tracks the caliber generation, and neither grade is a chronometer certificate at any point in the sequence.

|}

One authentication trap sits inside that map. A 4499 with SUPER PRECISION on the dial is carrying a service replacement, most likely a 5500-era Cal. 1530 dial; documented original 4499 dials read PRECISION, and the reference never left the factory with the Super Precision line.

Super Precision outside the Precision line
The Bubbleback 2764 carries a Super Precision dial branch on the Cal. 620N, and some of its dials also read "Officially Certified Chronometer." That combination shows what the grade words are doing. They describe the movement Rolex put in the case, not the family the watch belongs to. A Super Precision Bubbleback is a Bubbleback, catalogued under the Bubbleback hub, and the same holds for every Air-King in the table above.
