The 6611 is the reference that turned the Day-Date into the President. It arrived in 1957, about a year after the 6510 and 6511 originals, and it brought three firsts at once: the President bracelet, the "Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified" dial line, and a rebuilt caliber with a free-sprung Microstella balance and chronometer certification. The 6510 and 6511 invented the complication; the 6611 fixed its weak points and gave the line the bracelet and the dial text that define it today.
The 6611 is the fluted-bezel member of the second Day-Date generation, alongside the smooth-bezel 6612 and gem-set-bezel 6613. Reference histories usually place it from 1957, after the 6510 and 6511 launch pair. Auction catalogues add an earlier example: Phillips dates one gold 6611 to 1956. Rolex dates the Day-Date’s debut to 1956; reference-level start dates remain unsettled.

Within the second-generation cluster the 6611 is the fluted-bezel reference, sitting alongside the smooth-bezel 6612 and the diamond-bezel 6613. It kept the 36mm Oyster case and the 18k gold-only catalogue of the originals, and ran for three years before the 1803 and its siblings replaced the whole group around 1959. The shared origin story (Marc Huguenin's patents, the Presidential nickname, the full cluster roster) belongs to the 6510 entry.

The 6611 is associated with the 1055/1055B movement generation, the “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified” dial wording, and early President-bracelet fitment. Phillips lot 41 for the earlier 6511 records a President bracelet, placing published evidence before the 6611. Steel school watches and prototypes form a separate, disputed record from ordinary gold production.

The 6611 succeeds the 6510 and 6511 roughly a year after their 1956 Basel launch. The dating is not unanimous. Sotheby's groups the 6611 with the 1956 originals, while Monochrome and Rolex Magazine place it at 1957. The 1957 reading is the common one and matches the President bracelet's own introduction date.
Rolex dates the Day-Date debut to 1956. Sotheby’s account describes the 6510 and 6511 as the first pair and says they were replaced after one year by the 6611. Other histories commonly place the 6611 at 1957. Phillips, however, dates case 214,124 to 1956. That catalogue date anchors one watch to 1956; the reference’s production boundaries remain uncertain.

The reference anchors the second-generation 66xx cluster. The 6611 takes the fluted bezel, the 6612 the smooth bezel, and the 6613 a factory diamond-set bezel; the late 6611B carries a slightly thicker movement plate. The 6510 and 6511 offered nothing equivalent, a two-watch bezel-finish pairing where the 66xx cluster is a proper range. By about 1959 the 1803 and its siblings take over and the Day-Date moves into its long 4-digit era.
The 6611 carries a fluted bezel. The 6612 is the smooth-bezel sibling, and the 6613 has a gem-set bezel. The 1803 appears around 1959–60 in the histories cited here. The cited record leaves the exact 6611 changeover and a three-year run unconfirmed.

Production outline
Production outline
The reference kept the 36mm Oyster case and the gold-only catalogue of the originals, and ran for three years. Everything that separated it from them landed in a single step in 1957, which is why the 6611 reads as the start of the modern Day-Date rather than a minor update.
The clearest case-number anchors are individual auction records. Phillips lists yellow-gold case 214,124 as a 1956 watch and white-gold case 401,546 as a 1958 6611B. Antiquorum dates the Serpico y Laino 6611B by movement number 386,339 to about 1958. These dates fit the commonly published late-1950s chronology and document individual examples rather than a serial-based production sequence.

Case numbers from the auction record sit a little above the originals' range (214,124 on a 1956/57 yellow-gold example, 401,546 on a 1958 white-gold 6611B), consistent with the 1957–1959 window. No Rolex archival production figure has surfaced. The cluster as a whole gives way to the 1803 around 1959, and from that point the President bracelet and the SCOC dial that the 6611 introduced become Day-Date standards.
Two Antiquorum steel school-watch entries carry very different dates. The 2002 lot is catalogued as circa 1959 and has a caseback engraved for the Geneva watchmaking school in 1963. The 2013 lot is described as made in 1954, its case number is unrecorded, and the auction note calls it a practice watch. Those steel-watch descriptions are separate from the commercial gold 6611 chronology.

Movement notes
Movement notes
The 6611 carries the second-generation caliber 1055, the version watch registries label 1055B. It keeps the running gear of the first-generation movement (automatic, 25 jewels, 18,000 vph, 28.50mm across) but stands about 0.1mm taller at roughly 7.1mm and adds the two upgrades that matter. The balance becomes free-sprung with Rolex's Microstella regulating screws, paired with a Breguet overcoil, and the movement is COSC chronometer-certified. The midnight changeover becomes instant, fixing the gradual day-and-date transition that hobbled the first-generation 1055 and is usually blamed for the 6510/6511's single-year run. The full caliber lineage sits on Reference:Movements.
Phillips catalogues its 1956 yellow-gold 6611 as caliber 1055 and its 1958 white-gold 6611B as 1055B. Antiquorum describes the yellow-gold Serpico y Laino 6611B as caliber 1055. Specialist histories treat the 1055B as the later version associated with the 6611 generation. Auction houses apply the suffix inconsistently.

The 1055 generation is described in specialist watch histories as an automatic chronometer movement with a free-sprung Microstella balance; some accounts also specify a Breguet overcoil and an instantaneous day-and-date change. Those features describe the movement family in specialist literature. The cited sources leave the 6611’s production span and its relationship to the 6510/6511 open.

Auction catalogues mislabel these early movements. Antiquorum's 2002 steel lot lists the caliber as a 1556, a movement that did not exist until the 1803 era; the watch in fact carries the second-generation 1055. The dial text and the construction identify these movements more reliably than a caliber number assigned decades after the fact.
Antiquorum’s steel school-watch catalogues list calibers 1556 (2002) and 1066 (2013). Phillips’s 1055/1055B records describe the gold watches; the two steel-watch caliber labels remain unresolved. A movement inspection or factory record would be needed to identify either steel watch more firmly.

The cited watches show several dial configurations:

The 6611 introduces the four-line "Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified" text at six o'clock, the first Rolex of any line to carry it. The wording is a direct consequence of the COSC certification the upgraded caliber earned, and it replaces the pre-SCOC lines of the 6510/6511 ("Superlative Chronometer by Official Test" or "Officially Certified Chronometer"). Beyond the text, the dials follow the period layout: the full-word day aperture at twelve, the date at three, applied faceted gold indices, and a shift toward alpha hands where the originals ran dauphine.

Hands and lume vary across surviving examples. The yellow-gold Serpico y Laino 6611B was catalogued with luminous alpha hands and applied faceted baton indexes, while the white-gold Phillips 6611B carried non-luminous leaf-shaped hands, black enamel hand centres, and no luminous dots at the hour markers. On these early Day-Dates, dial language, market disc, metal, and lume package move independently.

The day disc follows the retail market — English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese discs are all documented, and the German-script Phillips lot, catalogued as probably unique, was likely built to win orders in German-speaking markets. The 6611 era is also where Arabic day discs first appear: SJX dates the spelled-out-Arabic dials to the late 1950s, with the date wheel kept in the Western "roulette" style, odd numbers in red and even in black. Diamond hour markers belong to the diamond-bezel 6613 and the precious-metal configurations rather than the standard 6611.

Case, bezel, crystal, and crown
Phillips describes the 6611 as the first Rolex reference with “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified” on the dial. The wording appears on several cited examples, including the German-script Phillips dial. The surviving records also show that lume, hand shape, day language, case metal and retailer signature vary by watch. A replacement day disc or dial needs to be assessed on the individual watch.

Case, bezel, crystal and crown
The 6611 uses the 36mm three-piece Oyster case carried over from the originals: screw-down Twinlock crown, screw-down caseback, acrylic crystal. The bezel is the fluted "Millerighe" in 18k gold matching the case, the finish that became the Day-Date signature and the one that separates the 6611 from its smooth-bezel sibling, the 6612.
Phillips and Antiquorum describe 36mm cases with fluted bezels, screw-down crowns and backs. Phillips specifies a plastic crystal on lot 50. Rolex’s history page records gold and platinum within the Day-Date line. The 6611 lots reviewed here document yellow, pink and white gold; a platinum example remains unverified.

The metals are yellow, pink and white gold. Yellow gold is the common case material; pink and white gold are scarcer, and the white-gold examples are usually diamond-set, which is what made the plain white-gold 6611B at Phillips notable enough to call out. Platinum and factory diamond-set dials are sometimes listed among the cluster's options, but no platinum or factory-diamond 6611 has surfaced at auction — Sotheby's treats the early references as gold only, and the diamond-bezel reference of the cluster is the 6613. The safe reading is that platinum and diamond-set examples belong to the 6613, not the 6611.

Bracelets, end links, and clasps
Catalogue wording for the 6611B case shape varies. Antiquorum calls case 384,689 “Boitier rond,” while it describes cases 386,339 and 397,072 as tonneau-shaped. These are the houses’ descriptions of individual lots; the records reviewed leave separate case variants unconfirmed.

The 6611 is the first Day-Date to wear the President, the three-piece semi-circular-link bracelet designed for this watch and now inseparable from it. The 6510 and 6511 launched on the Jubilee; the President arrives here in 1957. One of the earliest examples in the record is the President on the German-script Phillips lot, its folding clasp stamped 2.57. The bracelet is widely attributed to Gay Frères on contract to Rolex, though no primary documentation confirms it. The bracelet's name is older than the watch's: a 1957 Italian newspaper advertisement reproduced by Rolex Magazine already calls it the "President," years before Lyndon Johnson's presidency attached the name to the watch itself in the mid-1960s. The cross-family detail sits on Reference:Bracelets.
Bracelets and clasps
The Italian copy describes the Day-Date as solid 18k gold with bracelet "PRESIDENT" 7286/16, and the same Rolex Magazine piece reproduces a 1958 Canary Islands catalogue and a 1959 German advertisement using the President/Präsident bracelet language. The name was a launch-period sales term before it was anything else.
Rolex says the President bracelet was created specially for the Day-Date and unveiled with the model in 1956. Phillips lot 50 records a President bracelet on case 214,124, with the clasp stamped 2.57. Phillips also lists a President bracelet on 6511 case 134,692, likewise with a 2.57 clasp. Both are auction descriptions of surviving combinations. The clasp stamp dates the clasp rather than the watch head. Original delivery remains uncertain for each example.

As with the originals, the bracelet on a surviving 6611 does not always match the head: clasp date codes date the bracelet, not the watch, and service swaps are common across seventy years.
A 1957 Italian advertisement reproduced by Rolex Magazine uses “President” for the bracelet. The bracelet name was in use by then; its precise relationship to the watch’s later nickname is a separate question. The bracelet guide covers component dating and fitment.

Steel examples
Steel school watches and prototypes
A small number of 6611s exist in stainless steel, and they are among the most argued-over watches in the Day-Date story. Two overlapping populations sit behind them. One is a set of École d'Horlogerie de Genève prize watches, their casebacks engraved "Ecole d'Horlogerie de Genève – 1963" and given to top graduates of the Geneva watchmaking school; Antiquorum sold one in 2002 and catalogued the reference as 6611 while noting, in the same lot, that the model "was first created under the reference No. 6511." The other is a run of factory prototype or scholar pieces made before the launch, cased without reference numbers.
Auction records describe steel Day-Dates, though their grouping and reference attributions remain disputed. Antiquorum’s 2002 lot calls a steel watch a 6611, says six were made, dates it circa 1959, and describes it as a prize for Geneva watchmaking-school students. The lot also says the model was first created as reference 6511 and lists caliber 1556. These are Antiquorum’s statements; the same catalogue contains internal dating and reference tensions.

The sources do not agree on how many exist or what to call them. Antiquorum counts six, Monochrome five, and Phillips four; the prize-watch and prototype framings are treated as one population by some and two by others. The most expensive of them, an ex-John Goldberger steel example with case number 99,272, was sold by Monaco Legend in 2024 as a reference 6511, not a 6611, on the strength of its first-generation caliber 1055 and riveted Oyster bracelet. The steel Day-Date is best treated as a disputed branch shared between the two reference numbers rather than a settled 6611 variant.
Antiquorum’s 2013 school-watch lot is also titled 6611, but it gives 1954, leaves the case number unrecorded, lists caliber 1066, and says unnumbered steel Day-Dates were donated as practice tools. Phillips later described four steel Day-Date prototypes with 1555-series movements and attributed their origin to Rolex watchmakers. The auction descriptions differ in reference numbers, movement labels and dates; Monochrome reports five steel examples, and the available record leaves their overlap uncertain.

Antiquorum's 2002 lot essay gives one more version of the steel story: it says the six steel watches followed a marketing test in which demand proved stronger for gold, after which Rolex stopped steel production and kept the Day-Date in precious metals. That account comes from the auction house rather than the Rolex archive, but it explains why steel 6611s sit awkwardly between prototype, school-prize watch, and aborted-commercial-reference categories.
The ex-John Goldberger steel watch with case 99,272 was sold by Monaco Legend in 2024 as a 6511. Its 1055 movement and riveted Oyster bracelet support keeping it apart from the later gold 6611 specification, though its prototype reference remains contested in published histories. Record the steel watches by lot and attribution; the standard 6611 description follows the documented gold examples.

The 6611B
The 6611B designation
Auction catalogues use “6611B” for several later examples. Phillips applies it to the 1958 white-gold watch with caliber 1055B; Antiquorum uses it for gold and pink-gold watches. In the documented examples, it is useful shorthand for a sub-variant. Rolex’s factory material reviewed here leaves the suffix’s status as a separate case reference unresolved.

A late sub-variant, the 6611B, carries a movement plate about 0.1mm thicker than the standard 6611 — the same plate change that the 1055B caliber designation tracks. It is rare and turns up across metals: a plain white-gold example at Phillips, a Serpico y Laino-retailed yellow-gold example at Antiquorum. The external case is stamped 6611; the "B" appears in service paperwork and registries.
The 6611B records include yellow-, white- and pink-gold cases. The pictured white-gold example has no diamonds; pink-gold lots include both black diamond-marker and silvered dials. The Spanish-market Serpico y Laino watch has a Spanish day disc and a “Big Logo” bracelet that Antiquorum dates to 1958.

Antiquorum's 2017 lot records case no. 386,339, a matching Spanish day disc, and a "big logo" Rolex bracelet dated 1958, describing the package as built for the Spanish market. The 6611B is therefore an export-market branch as much as a late movement-code branch.

Auction record
A wider search across Antiquorum's own listings turns up five more 6611B examples, extending the documented metal range to pink gold. Two are pink gold with black dials: one set with baguette diamond hour markers (case 425488, Hong Kong 2024), the other catalogued as a second "Spanish calendar" (case 311781, Monaco 2023). A third pink-gold example carries a silvered dial with pink-gold indices (case 384689, Monaco 2017). Two further yellow-gold examples join the Serpico y Laino watch: a champagne dial (case 397072, Geneva 2016) and a tropical-toned champagne dial sold at Bonhams in 2020 (see the Auction record below for results and estimates). Cal. 1055 and 25 jewels, where stated, are consistent across every documented example.

Case-shape description is not consistent across these listings. Antiquorum's 2017 pink-gold lot calls its case "Boitier rond" (round case) in its French-language text, while two yellow-gold lots — the Serpico y Laino watch and the 2016 champagne example — both call their cases "tonneau-shaped." Direct photography of the pink-gold diamond-dial example and the Bonhams yellow-gold example both show a round Day-Date-style case, consistent with the base 6611's own case, not a tonneau form. That reads as a catalogue-template inconsistency in Antiquorum's own listings rather than a documented case-shape variant, and is reported here rather than silently resolved.

A plain gold 6611 is a comparatively modest buy, with examples clearing in roughly the CHF 12,000–20,000 range; the white-gold 6611B and the steel prize watch are the clear exceptions on rarity. Pink-gold and yellow-gold 6611B examples also appear in the record at Sotheby's. The five additional 6611B lots documented above add concrete data: EUR 12,350 for a pink-gold example and GBP 5,687.50 for a yellow-gold example, both within the plain-gold 6611 price band, while the remaining three carry estimates but no published hammer result. The ex-Goldberger steel example sold for EUR 1,196,000 in 2024, but it was catalogued as a 6511, and as a one-off prototype it sits outside any 6611 price band.
