The 6263 is the screw-down-pusher Oyster Cosmograph that ran from 1969 to 1988 and collected more named dial variants than any other Daytona reference. It is the canonical "Big Daytona" of the manual-wind era: 37mm Oyster case, black acrylic bezel insert, Valjoux-derived caliber 727. Documented dial variants and commissions include — Paul Newman MK1 through MK4, RCO, Big Red, Sigma, JPS (John Player Special, from the Lotus F1 livery), Albino, the Sultan of Oman, the Quraysh Hawk, the Arabian Knight.
Reference 6263 is the screw-down-pusher manual-wind Daytona with a black acrylic tachymeter bezel. Published histories place examples from the late 1960s or early 1970s through 1988. The reference uses Rolex Cal. 727 and appears with standard Cosmograph, Paul Newman, Big Red, Sigma, retailer-signed, and special commission dials. These labels describe observed watches, not a complete factory variant list.

Where it sits in the line
The 6263 sits at the end of the manual-wind Daytona line and runs in parallel with its sibling 6265, which carries the same case and movement but a metal engraved tachymetric bezel rather than a black acrylic insert. The pair replaced the short-lived 6262 (acrylic bezel, pump pushers) and 6264 (metal bezel, pump pushers) in 1969–70 and reintroduced the screw-down pushers first seen on the 6240 in 1965. The 6263 is the direct lineal heir of the 6240. Its run closes the manual-wind chapter: the Zenith-driven 16520 takes over in 1988 with a sapphire crystal, a 40mm case, and the new caliber 4030.
The 6263 is the black-acrylic-bezel sibling of the steel-bezel 6265. It follows the pump-pusher 6262 and 6264 and shares the screw-down pusher architecture introduced with the 6240. The 6263 and 6265 close the manual-wind Daytona generation before the automatic 16520 arrived around 1988.

Production outline
The 6263 ran for roughly nineteen years, longer than any other manual-wind Daytona. Most sources frame production as 1969 to 1988, with the 6263/6265 pair replacing the 6262/6264 by 1971. Monochrome's long-form Daytona history puts the 6263 at 1971–1988; The Vintage Rolex Field Manual and Pucci Papaleo's Ultimate Rolex Daytona both note pre-production 6263 examples appearing in 1969, which is the start year used here. Production totals were never officially published, and no independent source converges on a 6263-specific number. What is uncontested is that the 6263 was the dominant of the four 1970s Daytonas in production volume.
Reference histories disagree on whether the first 6263 cases belong to 1969 or to the 1971 catalogue run. The safest description is a late-1960s introduction followed by the main 1970s and 1980s production. No factory production total or complete serial map was located.

The run divides into three collector phases. Early standard dials cover the first half of the 1970s. Sigma dials carry the middle, roughly 1972 to 1978. Late production from the early 1980s onward is the Big Red era. That sequence holds before the rarer branch watches complicate it.
Standard dials, Sigma dials, Big Red dials, and exotic dials overlap in the surviving record. Avoid assigning a dial solely from a serial number. Case, movement, dial construction, and bracelet evidence must agree.

The 6263 carries Rolex caliber 727 throughout its production run. The 727 is the higher-frequency revision of the Valjoux 72 base — 21,600 vph (3 Hz) versus the 18,000 vph cal 722 used in the earlier 6239 and 6241. Architecture is otherwise unchanged: lateral-clutch chronograph coupling, column wheel, tri-compax sub-dial layout, 17 jewels, manual wind, no quickset, no hack. The same 727 powered the 6262 and 6264 from 1970 and the 6265 alongside the 6263 through 1988. See Reference:Movements#cal-727.
The 6263 uses Rolex Cal. 727, a higher-frequency derivative of the Valjoux 72 family. It runs at 21,600 vph; earlier 6239 and 6241 examples use 18,000-vph 722-family movements. The 727 is manual-wind, column-wheel, and tri-compax. The exact jewel count and visible bridge markings should be read from the individual movement.

US-bound examples carry an engraved "ROW" import code on the balance bridge, useful for forensic dating and provenance since Swiss-market examples lack the engraving. The 727 stayed in production until the 6263 and 6265 closed out in 1988, after which cal 4030 (Zenith El Primero base) took over the chronograph line in the 16520. The 727 was the last manual-wind chronograph caliber Rolex used in serial production.
ROW import marks occur on some US-market movements, but bridges and other parts can be replaced during service. The mark is useful context, not a stand-alone authentication test.

The table covers both standard production dials and the named exotics the screw-pusher Oyster Daytona collected over its long run.
The public record includes standard black and white dials, Paul Newman exotic dials, Big Red, Sigma, tropical, retailer-signed, and commission examples. Paul Newman mark labels overlap between authors and should be treated as collector shorthand.

The MK boundaries on Paul Newman dials sit on overlapping consensus across the canonical long-form sources: Benjamin Clymer's 2014 Hodinkee Reference Points, the Phillips Daytona Ultimatum lot essays, Pucci Papaleo's Ultimate Rolex Daytona, and Bob Ridley's Revolution dissection of the 6241 PN. The four-mark framing for 6263 is stable; the exact transition years between marks are not, and no source attempts to fix them precisely. Treat MK1–MK4 as a sequence with overlapping production windows rather than clean cutovers.

The dial, movement, case, and lume should be checked as one set. A colour, signature, or spacing detail can be genuine and still belong to a replacement dial.

<span id="case-bezel-crystal-and-crown"></span>
Case, bezel, crystal, and crown
Case, bezel, crystal, and crown
The 6263 case is 37mm steel, the standard manual-wind Daytona case of its era. Yellow gold 6263 examples exist in 14k for the North American market and 18k for export; gold cases are rare across the run and rarer still with original Paul Newman dials, where the gold 6263 PN typically surfaces as the Lemon Dial variant rather than a standard tri-color or panda PN. The screw-down chronograph pushers are the watch's defining feature, distinguishing the 6263 from the pump-pusher 6262 / 6264 pair and aligning it with the earlier 6240 (1965) and contemporary 6265. The screw-down design raised water resistance to 100m and prevented accidental chronograph actuation underwater.
The 6263 has an Oyster case with screw-down chronograph pushers, an acrylic crystal, and a black acrylic tachymeter insert. Gold cases exist in 14K and 18K examples in the auction record. The case and pushers should be inspected for replaced tubes, later polishing, and altered threads.

The bezel insert is black acrylic, marked with a tachymetric scale to 400 units per hour. This is the visual point of separation from the 6265, which carries the same case and movement but a steel engraved tachymetric bezel. Crystal is acrylic — a flat-domed Twinlock-compatible plexi consistent with the era. The crown is a Twinlock screw-down, period-standard for water-resistant Oyster sport watches before Triplock entered the line on the deeper-spec divers.

The black insert separates the 6263 from the metal-bezel 6265. Tachymeter scales and fonts vary by bezel generation; do not authenticate an insert from scale value alone.

<span id="bracelets-end-links-and-clasps"></span>
<span id="bracelets-end-links-and-clasps"></span>
Bracelets, end links, and clasps
Bracelets, end links, and clasps
The 6263 spans the late rivet through solid-link Oyster era. Three bracelet references appear across original-equipment fitment: 7835 (folded Oyster, 19mm) for early production from 1969 through the mid-1970s; 78350 (folded Oyster, slightly later geometry) for later 1970s; and the 93150-derived solid-link Oyster on late examples through the close of production. End links are the 271 family on 19mm fitment; the 580/580B family appears on solid-link cases. This is not a delivery chart — period-correct fitment is what survives on examples that have not been swapped.
Period records associate the 6263 with folded 7835 and 78350 bracelets and later solid-link Oyster fitments. End links and clasp construction change over the long run. A bracelet or clasp dates that component, not the chronograph head.

Clasps date the bracelet, not the watch head. Pre-1976 clasps carry quarterly numeric stamps inside the clasp blade in roman quarter / two-digit year format (II.72 reads second quarter 1972). From 1976 onward the single-letter year code applies: A=1976, B=1977, C=1978, D=1979, E=1980, F=1981, G=1982, H=1983, I=1984, J=1985, K=1986, L=1987, M=1988. A short flip-lock was introduced on the folded Oyster around 1983 and carries through to the end of 6263 production. For the date-code key, see Reference:Bracelets.
A late flip-lock clasp can fit the production period, but the clasp, end links, bracelet reference, case fit, and provenance must be assessed separately. Service replacements are common.

Paul Newman dials
<span id="paul-newman-variants"></span>
Paul Newman is a collector name for the exotic dial layout. Compare the 15/30/45 sub-dial numerals, cross-hairs, marker shapes, minute tracks, lume, and Singer markings with known examples. MK1–MK4 labels are not factory serials and have overlapping dates.
Paul Newman variants
The Paul Newman dial — square art-deco markers with cross-hairs, sub-dial numerals 15/30/45 rather than 20/40/60, Singer dial-maker stamp on the back — appears on six Daytona references: 6239, 6241, 6262, 6263, 6264, and 6265. The 6263 is the most populous PN host because of the long production run. The five recognised PN color types are two tri-color variants, panda, Oyster Sotto, and Lemon (the gold-case variant). The MK1–MK4 progression on 6263 PN dials tracks square-marker geometry, sub-dial outer ring proportions (Big Eyes appears at MK3), and print weight; the boundaries are consensus rather than factory-documented.
Big Red
Paul Newman's own 6263, a Big Red gifted by him to his daughter Clea in 2008, sits in the late-Big-Red production batch and carries case-back engraving from the gift.
Big Red is the standard 6263 dial with red DAYTONA lettering above the lower register. The text appears on later production, but the exact transition is not a clean published cutover. Floating Big Red examples have different spacing and need image-level comparison.

<span id="big-red"></span>
JPS
Big Red
The Big Red is the standard 6263 dial with "DAYTONA" printed in red block letters above the 6 o'clock sub-dial register. The variant emerged around 1976 and had become the default 6263 dial configuration by the early 1980s, carrying through to the 1988 production close. The Floating Big Red is the transitional variant in which the DAYTONA text sits visibly further from the sub-dial than on standard Big Red — small spacing detail, large rarity premium. Floating Big Red and Floating Big Red Sigma examples surface periodically at Phillips and Sotheby's; both are exceptionally rare relative to standard Big Red.
JPS describes a yellow-gold 6263 with a black exotic dial and gold-tone printing. The name refers to the John Player Special Lotus colour scheme and was applied by collectors after production. Gold-case JPS examples should be checked for hallmarks, case construction, and matching dial provenance.

<span id="jps"></span>
Albino
JPS
The John Player Special nickname connects to the 1970s Lotus Formula 1 team's black-and-gold livery sponsored by the John Player Special tobacco brand, made famous by Mario Andretti's 1978 Drivers' Championship in the Lotus 79. On the Daytona line, JPS denotes a black PN dial set into a yellow gold case. The 6241 is the most-cited JPS reference (fewer than 400 14k YG 6241s produced, North American market), but JPS configurations exist on 6263 as well. Bob Ridley's Revolution dissection of the 6241 records that gold-case 6263 PN examples which surface at auction are usually the Lemon Dial, so the "JPS 6263" framing is a narrower category than collector shorthand sometimes suggests.
Albino examples have a white-on-white layout without the usual Daytona wording. Their originality is disputed: some published accounts accept them as unusual factory watches, while later dossiers argue that known examples were assembled from period parts. Keep that dispute with the individual watch and its provenance.

<span id="albino"></span>
Sigma, tropical, and retailer-signed
Albino
The Albino 6263 is a white-on-white monochromatic dial — silver sub-dials on a white dial — bearing only "Rolex Oyster Cosmograph" without the standard "Daytona" wording or any other secondary text. Three examples are documented to date.
Sigma marks, tropical colour, and retailer signatures are clues rather than complete variant definitions. Tiffany, Beyer, Cartier, Asprey, and Serpico y Laino signatures are reported in the wider Daytona record, but each 6263 needs a lot-level or image-backed source. Middle Eastern commission watches with crests or Arabic numerals must be assessed individually.

The Albino is still disputed. Hodinkee treated it as a possible as-issued Rolex variant. Perezcope's 2025 dossier, built around a Tom Bolt confession, argues that the known Albinos are late-1990s constructions using a silver 6238 dial transplanted into 6263 cases. Sotheby's sold a third example in 2025 without adopting that conclusion. Original-issue status is not settled.
<span id="auction-record"></span>
Auction record
<span id="sigma-dial"></span>
The public record is dominated by special dials, celebrity provenance, and commission watches. Results below identify documented auction records; they are not a price guide.
Sigma dial
Sigma dials carry small σ symbols flanking the SWISS line at the 6 o'clock chapter, denoting gold hour markers. Swiss watchmaking adopted the convention in the 1970s under an industry agreement on identifying precious-metal components. On the 6263, Sigma dials appear roughly 1972 through 1978 across both standard and PN configurations.

Tropical 6263 dials are production-period black dials that have oxidized to brown under UV exposure or heat over decades. The silver sub-dials on a tropical 6263 often brown to a copper or amber tone in parallel. The phenomenon is more often associated with 16520 Patrizzi dials of the late 1980s, but is attested earlier on 6263 — the Iconeek archive (snapshot 2015-12-12, site defunct) documents one such example, and auction lots surface periodically. Tropical dials are not a separate variant; they are aged production dials, valued for the patina rather than the print configuration.

<span id="retailer-signed"></span>
The sale records establish that standard, exotic, gold, retailer-signed, and commission 6263 watches reached the market. They do not establish a complete production total, a universal serial range, or a stable ranking between dial variants.
Retailer-signed
Retailer-signed 6263 examples carry the retailer's name printed below the Rolex coronet. The work was done locally — at Tiffany's New York, Asprey's London, Beyer's in Zurich, Cartier's various boutiques, Serpico y Laino's Caracas — not at Rolex Switzerland. Christie's has catalogued a Tiffany-signed 14k yellow gold 6263. The Sultan of Oman 6263 carries the Asprey signature alongside the Omani national crest, and one example sold for USD 864,521 at Christie's Daytona Lesson One, Geneva, on 10 November 2013.

For a Paul Newman or RCO claim, compare the dial’s numerals, cross-hairs, marker feet, minute tracks, lume, and Singer marks with image-backed references. For gold watches, inspect hallmarks and case construction. For a retailer or commission claim, provenance matters as much as the printed signature.
Sultan of Oman, Quraysh Hawk, Arabian Knight
The rarest 6263 branches are Middle Eastern commissions. The Sultan of Oman 6263 carries the Asprey signature alongside the Khanjar, the Omani national crest; one example sold at Christie's Daytona Lesson One in November 2013 for USD 864,521. The UAE Quraysh Hawk carries the Quraysh raptor at 6 o'clock and surfaced at Phillips Daytona Ultimatum in 2018 with a CHF 200,000 to 400,000 estimate. The Arabian Knight is a black-dial PN 6263 with Eastern Arabic numerals on the sub-dials in place of the standard 15/30/45; the Daytona Ultimatum example carried a CHF 1.5M to 3.0M estimate. Each commission stands on its own provenance rather than as a single grouped category.
Bracelet and clasp evidence dates the bracelet. A replacement bezel, crystal, pusher, dial, hand set, or movement can be period-correct and still be later to the watch.

The modern 6263 market traces back to Christie's Daytona Lesson One in Geneva on 10 November 2013, curated by Aurel Bacs (then Christie's) and Pucci Papaleo. The 50-lot themed sale brought USD 13.2M total. Headline 6263 results: a 6263/6239 transitional Paul Newman with screw-down pushers c. 1969 sold for USD 1,089,186 — an early million-dollar Daytona result — and the Sultan of Oman 6263 c. 1974 sold for USD 864,521.

Phillips's Daytona Ultimatum in Geneva on 12 May 2018 was the modern thematic peak: 32 lots curated by Pucci Papaleo, with multiple 6263 special branches achieving headline results. The Oyster Sotto 6263 (RCO Mk1, Lot 14) carried a CHF 1M–2M estimate. The Quraysh Hawk 6263 came in at CHF 200,000–400,000, the Arabian Knight 6263 at CHF 1.5M–3.0M. The same sale featured the JPS 6241 in gold and the Unicorn 6265 white gold at CHF 5,937,500, establishing both the price ceiling for the era and the curatorial framework that subsequent Daytona auctions worked within.

Paul Newman's own 6263 Big Red came to market at Phillips New York on 12 December 2020 and sold for USD 5.48M including fees (USD 4.5M hammer). Bidding opened just under USD 1M, jumped to USD 2M on a bid by Paul Boutros (Phillips NY), and was won by a client of Livia Russo (Phillips Geneva). The result placed the Big Red third on the all-time Rolex auction list at that point, behind Newman's first Daytona (USD 17,752,500, Phillips 2017) and the Bao Dai 6062 (CHF 5,066,000, Phillips 2017).

The Albino 6263 carries its own market arc. Eric Clapton's example traded three times before the authenticity dispute: USD 50,190 at Christie's NY in June 2003, about USD 505,000 at Sotheby's in 2008, and CHF 1,325,000 (USD 1.42M) at Phillips in May 2015. The third documented Albino, case 2648447, sold at Sotheby's Abu Dhabi on 5 December 2025 for USD 952,500 including premium (USD 750,000 hammer) — a result that came in below previous Albino transactions and followed the Pereztroika dossier published two days before the sale. The previous owner of Lot 340 was reported to have paid nearly USD 3 million.

Standard production 6263s occupy the accessible end of the manual-wind Daytona market. Big Red examples in good condition trade in the mid-five to low-six figures. Sigma dials and standard panda configurations sit below that. Clean RCO and PN MK examples enter seven figures with provenance.

Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 6263 Big Red
Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 6263 Big Red

Reference 6263 is the screw-down-pusher manual-wind Daytona with a black acrylic tachymeter bezel. Published histories place examples from the late 1960s or early 1970s through 1988. The reference uses Rolex Cal. 727 and appears with standard Cosmograph, Paul Newman, Big Red, Sigma, retailer-signed, and special commission dials. These labels describe observed watches, not a complete factory variant list.

Where it sits in the line

The 6263 is the black-acrylic-bezel sibling of the steel-bezel 6265. It follows the pump-pusher 6262 and 6264 and shares the screw-down pusher architecture introduced with the 6240. The 6263 and 6265 close the manual-wind Daytona generation before the automatic 16520 arrived around 1988.

Production outline

Reference histories disagree on whether the first 6263 cases belong to 1969 or to the 1971 catalogue run. The safest description is a late-1960s introduction followed by the main 1970s and 1980s production. No factory production total or complete serial map was located.

Standard dials, Sigma dials, Big Red dials, and exotic dials overlap in the surviving record. Avoid assigning a dial solely from a serial number. Case, movement, dial construction, and bracelet evidence must agree.

Movement notes

The 6263 uses Rolex Cal. 727, a higher-frequency derivative of the Valjoux 72 family. It runs at 21,600 vph; earlier 6239 and 6241 examples use 18,000-vph 722-family movements. The 727 is manual-wind, column-wheel, and tri-compax. The exact jewel count and visible bridge markings should be read from the individual movement.

ROW import marks occur on some US-market movements, but bridges and other parts can be replaced during service. The mark is useful context, not a stand-alone authentication test.

Dial map

The public record includes standard black and white dials, Paul Newman exotic dials, Big Red, Sigma, tropical, retailer-signed, and commission examples. Paul Newman mark labels overlap between authors and should be treated as collector shorthand.

Variant Observed features and limits
Standard Cosmograph Black or white dial with contrasting sub-dials; Daytona placement and printing vary by period.
Paul Newman Exotic numerals, cross-hairs, and Singer-made dials occur on steel and gold watches. Verify each dial from images and construction.
Big Red Red DAYTONA text above the 6 o’clock register, associated with later 6263 production.
Sigma Small sigma marks at 6 o’clock indicate gold hour markers in period convention; exact dates overlap.
RCO / Oyster Sotto Early exotic layouts in which the word Oyster sits below the Cosmograph line. The names are collector terms.
JPS A black exotic dial in a yellow-gold case, named for the John Player Special colour scheme. Not a Rolex factory designation.
Albino White-on-white dial examples whose original-issue status is disputed.
Tropical or retailer-signed Aged production dials and local retailer signatures that need image-backed provenance.
Albino 6263 dial
Albino 6263 dial

The dial, movement, case, and lume should be checked as one set. A colour, signature, or spacing detail can be genuine and still belong to a replacement dial.

Case, bezel, crystal, and crown

The 6263 has an Oyster case with screw-down chronograph pushers, an acrylic crystal, and a black acrylic tachymeter insert. Gold cases exist in 14K and 18K examples in the auction record. The case and pushers should be inspected for replaced tubes, later polishing, and altered threads.

6263 RCO Oyster Sotto dial
6263 RCO Oyster Sotto dial

The black insert separates the 6263 from the metal-bezel 6265. Tachymeter scales and fonts vary by bezel generation; do not authenticate an insert from scale value alone.

Bracelets, end links, and clasps

Period records associate the 6263 with folded 7835 and 78350 bracelets and later solid-link Oyster fitments. End links and clasp construction change over the long run. A bracelet or clasp dates that component, not the chronograph head.

A late flip-lock clasp can fit the production period, but the clasp, end links, bracelet reference, case fit, and provenance must be assessed separately. Service replacements are common.

Special branches

Paul Newman dials

Paul Newman is a collector name for the exotic dial layout. Compare the 15/30/45 sub-dial numerals, cross-hairs, marker shapes, minute tracks, lume, and Singer markings with known examples. MK1–MK4 labels are not factory serials and have overlapping dates.

Big Red

Big Red is the standard 6263 dial with red DAYTONA lettering above the lower register. The text appears on later production, but the exact transition is not a clean published cutover. Floating Big Red examples have different spacing and need image-level comparison.

JPS

JPS describes a yellow-gold 6263 with a black exotic dial and gold-tone printing. The name refers to the John Player Special Lotus colour scheme and was applied by collectors after production. Gold-case JPS examples should be checked for hallmarks, case construction, and matching dial provenance.

Albino

Albino examples have a white-on-white layout without the usual Daytona wording. Their originality is disputed: some published accounts accept them as unusual factory watches, while later dossiers argue that known examples were assembled from period parts. Keep that dispute with the individual watch and its provenance.

Sigma, tropical, and retailer-signed

Sigma marks, tropical colour, and retailer signatures are clues rather than complete variant definitions. Tiffany, Beyer, Cartier, Asprey, and Serpico y Laino signatures are reported in the wider Daytona record, but each 6263 needs a lot-level or image-backed source. Middle Eastern commission watches with crests or Arabic numerals must be assessed individually.

Auction record

The public record is dominated by special dials, celebrity provenance, and commission watches. Results below identify documented auction records; they are not a price guide.

Venue Date Reference or branch Record
Christie's Daytona Lesson One November 2013 Sultan of Oman 6263 and transitional examples Lot-level records in the sale catalogue
Phillips Daytona Ultimatum May 2018 RCO, Quraysh Hawk, Arabian Knight, and other 6263 branches Catalogue records and estimates
Phillips New York December 2020 Paul Newman's Big Red 6263 Sold with provenance; result reported by Phillips and contemporaneous coverage
Sotheby's Abu Dhabi December 2025 Albino 6263, case 2648447 Sale record reported; originality remained disputed
Christie's 2013 Tiffany or Asprey-signed gold examples Individual catalogue records; not a census

The sale records establish that standard, exotic, gold, retailer-signed, and commission 6263 watches reached the market. They do not establish a complete production total, a universal serial range, or a stable ranking between dial variants.

Authentication

Check the case reference and serial, movement marking, screw-down pushers, bezel insert, dial printing, lume, and bracelet separately. Cal. 727 fits the documented 6263 generation; a 722, 722-1, or 727 may appear in a service history, but the movement should be documented rather than assumed.

Bracelet and clasp evidence dates the bracelet. A replacement bezel, crystal, pusher, dial, hand set, or movement can be period-correct and still be later to the watch.
