The 16753 is the two-tone steel and 18K yellow-gold GMT-Master, in production from 1981 to 1988. Collectors name it after the dial: "Root Beer" in the US, "Tigerauge" in German, "Eye of the Tiger" in English-language editorial, "Occhio di Tigre" in Italian, all four for the same brown sunburst nipple face. Caliber 3075 carries over from the steel 16750 with no 16753-specific tuning. Clint Eastwood wore one on screen in Firefox (1982), Tightrope (1984), and In the Line of Fire (1993), which made the reference the canonical "Eastwood Rolex." From 1983 it ran alongside the 16760, and that pairing marks where the family split. The 16753 kept the older caller-GMT mechanic; the 16760 introduced the flyer GMT-Master II.
The 16753 is the two-tone steel-and-18K-yellow-gold GMT-Master built around caliber 3075. Most specialist references place its production in 1981–1988; one published 6.1M-serial example is dated circa 1979, an outlier rather than a settled start date. The reference uses the linked-hand, or caller, GMT arrangement, so the 24-hour hand is not independently adjustable. Brown sunburst and glossy black nipple dials are the main documented branches. Collectors use Root Beer, Tigerauge, Tiger Eye, and Occhio di Tigre for the brown branch. Specialist articles also associate a 16753 with Clint Eastwood's wrist in Firefox (1982), Tightrope (1984), and In the Line of Fire (1993); that nickname is useful shorthand, not proof of a particular surviving watch. From 1983 it shared the catalog with the 16760, whose caliber 3085 introduced an independently adjustable local hour.

The auction record and the specialist literature both place production between 1981 and 1988. The earliest documented serial sits in the 63xxxxx band on a 1981 example, with mid-run serials at 8.3M for 1984 and 9.3M for 1986; the latest documented examples date to 1988, late-run 40mm Oysters still carrying original tritium patina. One specialist source dates a 6.1M-serial example to c.1979, ahead of the consensus 1981 introduction, a minority reading that nothing else corroborates.
Published examples place the reference between 1981 and 1988. A 63xxxxx serial is described as a 1981 watch; other published examples include an 8.3M serial dated to 1984 and a 9.3M serial dated to circa 1986. Crown Vintage lists a late-production 1988 example. Watch Collecting Lifestyle dates one 6.1M-serial watch to circa 1979, earlier than the usual start date; that single example should not be used to reset the production window.

Rolex has never published a total-production figure. Two-tone output was a small slice of GMT-Master production for the band, and brown-nipple examples are scarcer than black-nipple in the surviving market. Both dial finishes shipped throughout the run rather than splitting cleanly by year.
Rolex has not published a total-production figure. Published examples document both brown and black dials across the period, so the dial finish alone does not provide a firm year rule.

Caliber 3075 is the same automatic that powers the all-steel 16750 — 27 jewels, 28,800 vph, a 48–50-hour reserve, free-sprung Microstella balance with Breguet overcoil, hacking seconds, and quickset date through the crown. Hand-stack order changed from the 1575GMT to hour, GMT, minute, second. Nothing in the auction record points to 16753-specific tuning; apart from casing components the movement is interchangeable with the 16750.
Caliber 3075 is the same automatic used in the all-steel 16750: 27 jewels, 28,800 vph, and a published reserve of roughly 48–50 hours. Descriptions of the movement list a free-sprung Microstella balance, Breguet overcoil, hacking seconds, and quickset date. The hand stack changed from the 1575GMT to hour, GMT, minute, second. The cited auction and specialist descriptions do not identify a 16753-specific calibration; service work still needs to be checked against the movement and case numbers.

What caliber 3075 retains is the linked-hand caller-GMT mechanic. The 24-hour hand cannot be set independently of the local hour hand, so the second time zone is read off the bezel. An independent local hour arrives only with caliber 3085 in the GMT-Master II 16760 (1983) and the two-tone 16713 (1989). Service-era swaps from caliber 3075 to caliber 3175 are documented, and a 3175 in a 16753 case is a service replacement.

Published period examples show two main dial finishes, both with applied gold "nipple" hour markers and a central tritium plot. Surviving dials are commonly marked T SWISS T or T<25 below six o'clock; a replacement dial can change that reading.

The 16753 shipped with two factory dial finishes, both carrying applied gold "nipple" hour markers — precious-metal cones with a tritium plot at the centre. Every 16753 dial is tritium-lumed, marked T SWISS T or T<25 below six o'clock.

The signature 16753 dial is brown sunburst lacquer over a metal substrate, with applied gold nipple markers and a yellow-gold coronet. The four collector nicknames all point at one thing, the resemblance to semi-precious tiger's-eye stone. Condition turns on the lacquer. The early-1980s formulation flakes around the index circumference and at six o'clock once the dial has seen humidity, and that flaking is the standing concern on the brown branch. Untouched examples show cream-to-warm-beige tritium patina on the index plots, and the yellow-gold hands lighten in parallel.

Tigerauge, Tiger Eye, and Occhio di Tigre refer to the dial's resemblance to tiger's-eye stone. Published examples show flaking or discoloration around the index area on some dials. Cream-to-beige tritium plots and matching aging on the gold hands are observations from individual watches, not a test for original delivery.

A black lacquer ground with the same applied gold nipple markers and yellow-gold coronet. It pairs most often with the all-black 24-hour bezel insert, though black-and-gold "Rootbeer" inserts also surface on the black-dial branch. Black-dial examples age more cleanly than the brown sunburst, the lacquer base being the more stable formulation.

One specialist source describes a "pristine clean matte dial rather than glossy" on a c.1979 6.1M-serial example. If accurate, the matte branch would sit at the very front of the run, immediately behind the 16750's matte dials. Nothing corroborates it. No major-house lot catalogs a matte 16753, and the reading rests on that single description.
Watch Collecting Lifestyle describes a "pristine clean matte dial" on its circa-1979 6.1M-serial example. That description places the watch near the start of the proposed run, but it is a single published example and no major-house catalog cited here catalogs a matte 16753. Keep the classification provisional when assessing a watch from photographs.

The case is a 40mm two-tone Oyster — stainless steel mid-case with 18K yellow-gold bezel ring, crown, and outer bracelet links. Acrylic crystal with Cyclops over the date. The 100m water-resistance rating carries the 16750 specification. The two-tone format is shared with the contemporary Datejust and the 1675/3 predecessor; the 16753 case is the GMT-Master execution of the standard 1980s Rolesor pattern.
The case is a 40mm two-tone Oyster with a stainless-steel mid-case and 18K yellow-gold bezel ring and crown. It uses an acrylic crystal with Cyclops over the date; published specifications give 100m water resistance. The format follows the two-tone 1675/3 predecessor and the period Rolesor pattern, but the case, bezel, and movement numbers remain the better identification points.

The bezel is a 24-hour bidirectional aluminium insert in two factory configurations. The brown-and-cream "Rootbeer" insert is monochrome brown with cream / champagne 0–12 half — distinct from the predecessor 1675/8's true brown-and-yellow-gold combination. The all-black 24-hour insert pairs with black-dial examples. Aftermarket inserts and color-swaps are common across this generation; the same 24-hour insert tooling cross-fits the 1670, 1675, 16750, 16753, and 16758, so insert-only identification cannot date a 16753 watch head.

The brown-and-cream Root Beer insert has a brown field with a cream or champagne 0–12 half, distinct from the predecessor 1675/8's brown-and-gold insert. All-black inserts are also documented on 16753 watches. Aftermarket inserts and color swaps are common; parts listings cross-list inserts for several GMT references, so an insert alone cannot date a 16753 watch head.

Two factory bracelets, both two-tone. The Oyster 78363B with 455B end-links is the standard sport fitment, three-link with the hollow centre links typical of 1980s construction. The Jubilee 62523H with 450 or 455J end-links is the five-link flat-profile alternative, and it is heavily documented across the run. Its clasp codes follow the standard letter-quarter / number-year format (D12 = Q4 1979, H14 = Q3 1984, I 9 ≈ Q3/Q4 1984, I11 ≈ 1986), and they date the bracelet, not the watch head.
Published examples document two two-tone bracelet options. The Oyster 78363B is seen with 455B end-links; the Jubilee 62523H is seen with 450 or 455J end-links. Individual watches also carry clasp stamps such as D12, H14, I 9, and I11. Those stamps date the bracelet's assembly, not the watch head. Tiffany-signed examples are documented on both Oyster and Jubilee configurations, with box and papers varying by lot; a retailer signature does not by itself prove the original bracelet or delivery set.

Tiffany & Co. retailer-signed examples surface on Oyster bracelets with stretch and lightly-polished outer links typical of unworn-then-worn examples. Box-and-papers full sets exist across both dial branches, and the brown-nipple Tiffany double-signed examples sit at the top of the surviving full-set tier.

The 16753 trades as the canonical 1980s two-tone GMT-Master. Standard brown-nipple examples in clean original condition cluster USD 8,000–18,000 across the major houses depending on bracelet-and-paperwork integrity. Tiffany & Co. double-signed examples carry a meaningful premium — the Bonhams 2024 result of USD 24,320 anchors the upper end of the standard market for double-signed retailer dials. The Dr. Pepper 100th Anniversary commission with custom caseback engraving and custom clasp logo is a one-off variant that sits in its own provenance tier.
These are individual auction records, not a valuation range. The results vary with condition, retailer signature, bracelet, papers, and unusual provenance. The Dr. Pepper lot carries custom caseback engraving and a custom clasp logo; those details belong to that watch and do not define the 16753 reference. Bonhams' catalog calls lot 1063 a GMT-Master II, but a 16753 uses caliber 3075 and the linked-hand caller-GMT arrangement, so that catalog wording should not be used as a movement or model identifier.

The 16753 is the canonical "Clint Eastwood Rolex." Eastwood wore it on screen three times: as fighter pilot Mitchell Gant in Firefox (1982), as detective Wes Block in Tightrope (1984), and as Secret Service agent Frank Horrigan in In the Line of Fire (1993). The specialist literature agrees the watch was his own, worn in character rather than issued by studio wardrobe. No public auction lot has surfaced as the actual on-screen watch.
Specialist watch articles use “Clint Eastwood” as a nickname for the 16753 and repeatedly associate the reference with his on-screen appearances: fighter pilot Mitchell Gant in Firefox (1982), detective Wes Block in Tightrope (1984), and Secret Service agent Frank Horrigan in In the Line of Fire (1993). The association is well established in collector writing, but the cited articles do not identify a surviving auction lot as the actual screen-used watch or settle whether production wardrobe supplied it.

The Eric Clapton 16753 connection that occasionally appears in collector summaries is unsupported. Clapton's known GMT-Master is the modern 116710LN, a 2009 gift from Paul Stewart documented in Phillips's Clapton retrospective.

Rolesor Root Beer GMT
Rolesor Root Beer GMT

Where it sits in the line

The 16753 is the two-tone Rolesor variant of the 16750: same caliber 3075, same 40mm crown-guard Oyster case, same caller-GMT mechanic. Only the case and bracelet metals differ. It replaces the 1675/3 two-tone, which itself succeeded the 1675/8 on caliber 1575 from the late 1960s through the 1970s.

Across its 1981–1988 run the reference shared the catalog with the all-steel 16750 and the all-yellow-gold 16758, and from 1983 with the 16760 GMT-Master II. Two mechanical lines ran side by side. The 16753 and 16700 carried the caller GMT mechanic (cal. 3075 / 3175); the 16760 and 16713 carried the flyer mechanic (cal. 3085 / 3185) with an independent local hour. That makes the 16753 the last two-tone GMT on the linked-hand caller logic. The two-tone flyer arrives with the 16713 in 1989.

Production outline

Published examples place the reference between 1981 and 1988. A 63xxxxx serial is described as a 1981 watch; other published examples include an 8.3M serial dated to 1984 and a 9.3M serial dated to circa 1986. Crown Vintage lists a late-production 1988 example. Watch Collecting Lifestyle dates one 6.1M-serial watch to circa 1979, earlier than the usual start date; that single example should not be used to reset the production window.

Rolex has not published a total-production figure. Published examples document both brown and black dials across the period, so the dial finish alone does not provide a firm year rule.

Movement notes

Dial map

Published period examples show two main dial finishes, both with applied gold "nipple" hour markers and a central tritium plot. Surviving dials are commonly marked T SWISS T or T<25 below six o'clock; a replacement dial can change that reading.

Brown sunburst nipple

The signature 16753 dial is brown sunburst lacquer over a metal substrate, with applied gold nipple markers and a yellow-gold coronet.

Glossy black nipple

A black lacquer ground with the same applied gold nipple markers and yellow-gold coronet. Published examples often use the all-black 24-hour insert, but black dials also appear with brown-and-cream inserts. Condition varies by dial and service history; a clean black surface is not by itself evidence of a different production date.

Matte transitional (disputed)

Watch Collecting Lifestyle describes a "pristine clean matte dial" on its circa-1979 6.1M-serial example. That description places the watch near the start of the proposed run, but it is a single published example and no major-house catalog cited here catalogs a matte 16753. Keep the classification provisional when assessing a watch from photographs.

Case, bezel, crystal, and crown

Two-tone case and bezel
Two-tone case and bezel

The case is a 40mm two-tone Oyster with a stainless-steel mid-case and 18K yellow-gold bezel ring and crown. It uses an acrylic crystal with Cyclops over the date; published specifications give 100m water resistance. The format follows the two-tone 1675/3 predecessor and the period Rolesor pattern, but the case, bezel, and movement numbers remain the better identification points.

The bezel is a bidirectional 24-hour aluminium insert.

Bracelets, end links, clasps, and packaging notes

Published examples document two two-tone bracelet options. The Oyster 78363B is seen with 455B end-links; the Jubilee 62523H is seen with 450 or 455J end-links. Individual watches also carry clasp stamps such as D12, H14, I 9, and I11. Those stamps date the bracelet's assembly, not the watch head. Tiffany-signed examples are documented on both Oyster and Jubilee configurations, with box and papers varying by lot; a retailer signature does not by itself prove the original bracelet or delivery set.

Historical market and auction record

Sale Lot Year Configuration Hammer

These are individual auction records, not a valuation range. The results vary with condition, retailer signature, bracelet, papers, and unusual provenance. The Dr. Pepper lot carries custom caseback engraving and a custom clasp logo; those details belong to that watch and do not define the 16753 reference. Bonhams' catalog calls lot 1063 a GMT-Master II, but a 16753 uses caliber 3075 and the linked-hand caller-GMT arrangement, so that catalog wording should not be used as a movement or model identifier.

Celebrity provenance

Specialist watch articles use “Clint Eastwood” as a nickname for the 16753 and repeatedly associate the reference with his on-screen appearances: fighter pilot Mitchell Gant in Firefox (1982), detective Wes Block in Tightrope (1984), and Secret Service agent Frank Horrigan in In the Line of Fire (1993). The association is well established in collector writing, but the cited articles do not identify a surviving auction lot as the actual screen-used watch or settle whether production wardrobe supplied it.
