<small>[[Reference:explorer|Explorer]] › '''6350'''</small>

The 6350 is the first Explorer reference where every known example carries the "Explorer" name on the dial. It takes the same A296 calibre as the 6150 but certifies it to COSC standard, earning "Officially Certified Chronometer" text. Two dial variants exist: a standard chapter ring gilt dial and an extremely rare honeycomb (waffle) textured dial, one of the most striking configurations in the entire Explorer family. The case was strengthened for altitude and pressure resistance, and the movement was filled with special lubricants rated for extreme temperatures.

The 6350 is an early chronometer-rated Explorer documented from 1953 into 1954/55. Most published production examples have a black gilt dial with the Explorer and Officially Certified Chronometer lines, while a smaller group has a pressed honeycomb texture. It uses caliber A296 in a 36–37mm steel case with a smooth bezel. Hillary's summit watch was a Smiths De Luxe A409; the Rolex watches associated with the 1953 expedition were 6098s, not 6350s (Rescapement; The Watch Collectors' Club; Beyer Watch Museum). The 6350 appeared after the May 1953 summit. Douglas Prior's 1956 Royal Society Antarctic Expedition watch is a separate documented polar example (Antiquorum 2018, case 955,761).

The 6350 succeeds the 6150 and precedes the 6610. It marks the point where the Explorer becomes a formally distinct product line rather than a Precision variant with aspirations.
The 6350 succeeds the 6150 and precedes the 6610. The 6098 (1952), 6150 (1953), and 6350 (1953–55) form the early Explorer cluster on caliber A296; the 6610 (1955–59) moves to caliber 1030.

The Field Manual documents several Explorer-adjacent references from the same period that share the 36mm case and chronometer ambitions: 6298 (Cal. 1030 and A296 variants, SS, "Perpetual Precision" and "Perpetual Chronometer"), 6299 (Cal. A296, SS/YG, a steel/yellow gold variant, "Perpetual Chronometer"), 8044 (Cal. 1030, SS, "Perpetual Chronometer"), 8045 (Cal. 1030, gold fill, "Perpetual Chronometer, Gold Shell"), and 1427 (Cal. 3000, SS, "Perpetual Chronometer"). None carry the Explorer name, but together they show how broadly Rolex was experimenting in this space during the early 1950s.
The dial text separates the references. Chronometer-rated 6098 examples read Officially Certified Chronometer, the 6150 reads Precision, and the 6350 combines Explorer with Officially Certified Chronometer. A small number of 6098s also carry Explorer wording, including white-dial expedition watches that predate the 6350. The 6350 is therefore the first reference in which Explorer appears as the regular production designation, while the 6098 remains earlier on the narrow question of the first Explorer-marked dial.

Case production was concentrated in 1953, with assembly continuing over several years after. The end-of-production date is disputed. Monochrome says the 6350 was discontinued in 1954, while Hodinkee gives a range of 1953–1955. The Field Manual confirms the 1953 start date. Total production volume is unknown. The short production window and rarity of surviving examples, particularly the honeycomb dial, suggest limited numbers.
Case production was concentrated in 1953, with assembly continuing into 1954. Caso Watches and explorer1016.com both date the launch to summer 1953. Monochrome (Geelen) reads the run as 1953–1954; Hodinkee Reference Points gives 1953–1955; the Field Manual confirms the 1953 start without specifying an end. The published dates overlap; no source establishes a more precise end date.

<span id="the-explorer-trademark"></span>
Documented case numbers cluster tightly in the 955,xxx range. Phillips Geneva XIII lot 75 (case 955,327), Antiquorum HK May 2022 lot 218 (case 955,343), Phillips Geneva XV lot 157 (case 955,369), Antiquorum HK June 2024 lot 369-111 (case 955,472), Antiquorum Geneva Nov 2018 lot 317-570 (case 955,761), Phillips NY Racing Pulse lot 17 (case 955,837), Phillips Geneva FOUR lot 179 (case 955,855). Other published examples extend the known range to 955,190–955,948. That numerical range does not establish a production total, since the surviving records are selective and Rolex case numbers were not a complete public register.
=== The Explorer trademark ===

Rolex registered the "Explorer" trademark on January 26, 1953, before the Everest expedition in May 1953. Rolex was already planning the Explorer identity before Hillary and Tenzing reached the summit. The "Explorer" name was added to 6350 dials after 1953, which raises the possibility that the earliest 1953 cases were assembled with non-Explorer-marked dials before the name was applied.
Total production volume is unknown. The short production window and the small number of documented auction examples support a limited run, but the surviving record cannot be converted into a reliable total.

== Movement notes ==

The 6350 runs calibre A296 in COSC-certified configuration. This is the same base movement found in the 6150, but now meeting chronometer standards. The COSC certification earns the "OCC" (Officially Certified Chronometer) text on the dial and represents the key technical upgrade from the 6150.
The 6350 runs caliber A296 in a chronometer-adjusted configuration. A296 is the self-winding caliber used in the 6098, 6150, 6350, and several early Submariner references. Published specifications usually give 18 jewels, a rhodium-plated finish, straight-line lever escapement, monometallic balance with shock protection, and a self-compensating Breguet balance spring. The current movement registry notes that catalogues count 17–19 jewels differently, so the jewel count should not be treated as a precise identifier. The 6350's distinction is its chronometer regulation and the resulting OCC dial line.

The movement was filled with special temperature-rated lubricants allowing operation from -20 degrees C to +40 degrees C, a specification that connects directly to the Everest expedition narrative and the extreme conditions the watch was designed to withstand.
A296 is a 29.5mm full-rotor, unidirectional Perpetual; it is not a bumper caliber. The 1030 that followed uses bidirectional winding and a thinner module (Phillips Geneva Watch Auction FOUR lot 146; Charlie Dunne, Wind Vintage). A few surviving 6350s have caliber 775 listed in later catalogues, including the Douglas Prior watch and an Antiquorum 2009 example. Those are service replacements, not evidence that the reference was delivered with 775. A temperature-oil operating range sometimes repeated in specialist material is not supported by a cited Rolex or period-press source and is omitted here.

The 6350 record shows two recurring dial surfaces. The honeycomb or waffle texture appears in roughly half of the selected major-house lots (6 of 11); the count is a sample of documented sales, not a production ratio. Collectors use honeycomb and waffle for the same pressed cross-hatch surface, so they are treated as one variant here.
<span id="standard-gilt-chapter-ring"></span>
=== Standard gilt chapter ring ===
Black lacquered dial with gilt printing, a chapter ring at the perimeter, "Explorer" text, and the OCC line. All text is gilt. Antiquorum HK June 2024 lot 369-111 (case 955,472, HKD 150,000) is one recent example. The configuration appears across the published 1953–55 record; the surviving sales do not establish a relative survival rate against the honeycomb dial.

Extremely rare. The dial surface carries a distinctive raised honeycomb or waffle texture instead of a smooth finish, a hand-stamped pattern more common on dressier Rolex references of the period and almost unheard of on an Explorer. This is one of the rarest and most visually striking Explorer dial variants in any reference. A honeycomb-dial 6350 sold at Christie's for about $70,000. Good standard examples sit in the $70,000–$90,000 range according to the same source.
The pressed cross-hatch texture under the gilt printing replaces the smooth lacquer surface. Specialist descriptions attribute the texture to a stamped and chemically bonded dial finish, but the surviving sources do not document Rolex's complete production process. Honeycomb dials make up roughly half of the selected major-house lot record on the reference. Phillips Geneva XIII 2021 lot 75 (case 955,327), Phillips Racing Pulse NY Dec 2020 lot 17 (case 955,837), Phillips Geneva XV May 2022 lot 157 (case 955,369), Phillips Geneva FOUR Nov 2016 lot 179 (case 955,855), Antiquorum HK May 2022 lot 218 (case 955,343, est HKD 380,000–480,000) anchor the variant.

<span id="numeral-format"></span>
=== Numeral discrepancy ===
=== Numeral format ===

Some sources describe the 6350 as carrying Roman numerals at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock, while other sources and photographic evidence clearly show Arabic numerals at those positions. The contradiction has not been resolved. The Roman-numeral descriptions may refer to a different variant or may simply be errors. Further investigation is needed.
Published photographs of the documented 6350 lots show Arabic numerals at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock. Some older editorial sources describe Roman numerals at those positions; the available photographs do not support a separate Roman-numeral variant, so that wording is best treated as a source error unless a dated example is produced.

All hands on the 6350 were gilt. Documented variants include the long-neck Mercedes hour hand, which is the most commonly associated style; simpler pencil hands; a syringe-style minute hand with a distinct pointed shape; and a lollipop seconds hand matching the 6200/6205 Submariners of the same era. The variety of hand configurations across a short production run is notable and suggests either ongoing design iteration or multiple dial/hand combinations assembled from shared parts bins.
Hands on the 6350 are gilt across the auction record. Published examples show a long-neck Mercedes hour hand, pencil hands, and syringe-style minute hands; the seconds hand is also seen with the lollipop tip used on contemporary 6200 and 6205 Submariners. The surviving sales do not establish a serial-ranged sequence for these combinations, so they are best recorded as documented configurations rather than a dated progression.

The 6350 carries a 36mm stainless steel case with a smooth bezel and an acrylic crystal. The Brevet-type crown is marked with a plus sign. The case was strengthened for altitude and pressure resistance, the technical rationale for the Everest-expedition positioning.
The 6350 uses a stainless-steel case measured at 36–37mm in published auction records, with a smooth fixed bezel and an acrylic crystal. Its case is slimmer than the bubbleback-style 6098 and 6150 profile. The Brevet crown carries the "+" Swiss-made sub-mark. Case construction follows the period Rolex Oyster pattern.

Bracelet fitment records for the 6350 are thin. Original-delivery bracelet evidence is a gap in the current research.
Bracelet fitment records for the 6350 are thin. The Sotheby's Explorer archive piece and listing describe rivet Oyster bracelets on documented examples, but original-delivery anchor points are weaker than for the contemporary Submariners. A period-correct option was a Gay Frères stretch riveted Oyster, as used on contemporary 6204/6205 Submariners and early Explorers. The surviving 6350 record does not establish a single original-delivery bracelet, and specific end-link and clasp documentation is incomplete.

=== Douglas Prior, IGY 1956 polar provenance ===
Antiquorum Geneva November 2018 lot 317-570 (case 955,761) records a 6350 associated with Douglas Prior's Royal Society Antarctic Expedition / IGY 1956 work at Halley Bay. The watch was returned to Rolex after the expedition and re-gifted with a letter referencing the serial. The catalogue lists caliber 775, which is a service replacement. This is documented polar provenance for a 6350; it is separate from the disputed Hillary and Tenzing claims attached to some 6098s. The catalogue title sometimes styles Prior as "Sir", but the lot note identifies him as Douglas Roland Otway Prior and documents the Polar Medal rather than a knighthood.

=== Honeycomb dial ===
== Historical market and auction record ==

The honeycomb (waffle) dial 6350 deserves its own collecting category. The textured surface is immediately recognizable and entirely unlike the smooth gilt dials found on standard examples. Survival rate is very low. When one comes up at auction, expect strong competition. The Christie's result of about $70,000 provides a floor, and examples in exceptional condition could trade higher in today's market.

6350 honeycomb dial
6350 honeycomb dial

Where it sits in the line

The 6350 succeeds the 6150 and precedes the 6610. The 6098 (1952), 6150 (1953), and 6350 (1953–55) form the early Explorer cluster on caliber A296; the 6610 (1955–59) moves to caliber 1030.

Production outline

Case production was concentrated in 1953, with assembly continuing into 1954. Caso Watches and explorer1016.com both date the launch to summer 1953. Monochrome (Geelen) reads the run as 1953–1954; Hodinkee Reference Points gives 1953–1955; the Field Manual confirms the 1953 start without specifying an end. The published dates overlap; no source establishes a more precise end date.

Documented case numbers cluster tightly in the 955,xxx range. Phillips Geneva XIII lot 75 (case 955,327), Antiquorum HK May 2022 lot 218 (case 955,343), Phillips Geneva XV lot 157 (case 955,369), Antiquorum HK June 2024 lot 369-111 (case 955,472), Antiquorum Geneva Nov 2018 lot 317-570 (case 955,761), Phillips NY Racing Pulse lot 17 (case 955,837), Phillips Geneva FOUR lot 179 (case 955,855). Other published examples extend the known range to 955,190–955,948. That numerical range does not establish a production total, since the surviving records are selective and Rolex case numbers were not a complete public register.

Total production volume is unknown. The short production window and the small number of documented auction examples support a limited run, but the surviving record cannot be converted into a reliable total.

Movement notes

Dial map

The 6350 record shows two recurring dial surfaces. The honeycomb or waffle texture appears in roughly half of the selected major-house lots (6 of 11); the count is a sample of documented sales, not a production ratio. Collectors use honeycomb and waffle for the same pressed cross-hatch surface, so they are treated as one variant here.

Standard gilt chapter ring

Black lacquered dial with gilt printing, a chapter ring at the perimeter, "Explorer" text, and the OCC line. All text is gilt. Antiquorum HK June 2024 lot 369-111 (case 955,472, HKD 150,000) is one recent example. The configuration appears across the published 1953–55 record; the surviving sales do not establish a relative survival rate against the honeycomb dial.

Honeycomb (waffle)

Numeral format

Published photographs of the documented 6350 lots show Arabic numerals at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock. Some older editorial sources describe Roman numerals at those positions; the available photographs do not support a separate Roman-numeral variant, so that wording is best treated as a source error unless a dated example is produced.

Hands

Hands on the 6350 are gilt across the auction record. Published examples show a long-neck Mercedes hour hand, pencil hands, and syringe-style minute hands; the seconds hand is also seen with the lollipop tip used on contemporary 6200 and 6205 Submariners. The surviving sales do not establish a serial-ranged sequence for these combinations, so they are best recorded as documented configurations rather than a dated progression.

Case, bezel, crystal, and crown

The 6350 uses a stainless-steel case measured at 36–37mm in published auction records, with a smooth fixed bezel and an acrylic crystal. Its case is slimmer than the bubbleback-style 6098 and 6150 profile. The Brevet crown carries the "+" Swiss-made sub-mark. Case construction follows the period Rolex Oyster pattern.

Bracelets, end links, and clasps

Bracelet fitment records for the 6350 are thin. The Sotheby's Explorer archive piece and listing describe rivet Oyster bracelets on documented examples, but original-delivery anchor points are weaker than for the contemporary Submariners. A period-correct option was a Gay Frères stretch riveted Oyster, as used on contemporary 6204/6205 Submariners and early Explorers. The surviving 6350 record does not establish a single original-delivery bracelet, and specific end-link and clasp documentation is incomplete.

Special branches

Douglas Prior, IGY 1956 polar provenance

These are selected auction records, not a valuation guide. Results vary with dial condition, originality, provenance, and the quality of the accompanying documentation. The USD 175,000 dealer figure in an older listing is an asking price, not a public sale result, and is omitted from the comparison.
