The 3130 is a precious-metal Bubbleback documented across eight lots at Christie's, Phillips,
Auction records describe more than one kind of ref. 3130. They include a stainless-steel, hand-wound watch with a black dial, gold examples with automatic movements and both subsidiary and centre seconds, and retailer-associated watches and mixed-numeral dials. These are catalogue descriptions of individual watches; they do not establish a complete specification or factory production range.
Antiquorum, and Bonhams between 2002 and 2026. Every recorded example runs a 9 3/4-ligne
automatic movement with subsidiary seconds at six, cased in 14K or 18K gold in both yellow and
pink tones — no stainless steel example has surfaced. The reference sits alongside 3131 and
3132, the pair The Vintage Rolex Field Manual names as the first Bubblebacks to adopt Rolex's
two-piece Oyster case in 1936; the Field Manual does not include 3130 in that statement, and no
3130 lot describes its own case construction directly.

Most 3130s carry a plain silvered or champagne dial with applied Arabic numerals. Three lots
break that pattern: an 18K gold example with a black lacquer "California" dial, half Roman
numerals above the centre line and half Arabic below; and two pink gold examples sold by
Antiquorum a few months apart, one with a plain signed dial and the other with a dial co-signed
"Serpico y Laino," the Caracas jeweler that retailed Rolex across Venezuela.

"Bubbleback" is a collector nickname, never an official Rolex designation, for the family of
“Bubbleback” is a collector name for early Oyster Perpetual watches with a domed back for the self-winding mechanism. The Vintage Rolex Field Manual lists 3130/7 and 3130/8 in yellow and rose gold. Both rows say “Chronometer” and “Perpetual, Seconds sub-dial”; neither gives a start year or caliber. The same book names refs. 3131 and 3132 as the references that introduced a two-piece Oyster case in 1936. It does not include 3130 in that statement.
Oyster Perpetual references built from the early 1930s through the mid-1950s around the domed
caseback needed to clear the early self-winding rotor. The Vintage Rolex Field Manual credits
references 3131 and 3132 by name as the two Bubblebacks that introduced Rolex's two-piece Oyster
case in 1936 — the caseback screws directly into the case middle rather than into a separate
bezel ring. The 3130 sits in the same case-number neighborhood and shares its 32mm diameter, but
it is not named in that statement, and none of its eight documented lots describes the case as
two-piece or three-piece. Its movement, by contrast, tracks the 3131 side of the family closely:
every documented 3130 runs subsidiary seconds rather than the centre sweep seconds that defines
sibling 3132.

The Field Manual's own Bubbleback reference table lists suffix variants 3130/7 and 3130/8 in
Auction catalogues show why the reference should not be reduced to one configuration. A 2013 Sotheby's listing describes a stainless-steel, manually wound Cal. 50 watch with subsidiary seconds. Christie's described a 14K gold 3130 with automatic Cal. 635 and centre seconds in 2007. Other gold examples have automatic movements and subsidiary seconds. The surviving records do not explain when or why these differences arose.
yellow and pink gold, both marked "Perpetual, Seconds sub-dial." It does not print a caliber
number or a start year against either row — a gap that stands out next to the adjacent 3131/7
and 3131/8 rows, which pair caliber 620 directly with 1936.

Production outline
Production and dating
No primary source states a factory production window for the 3130. The documented auction
No factory source reviewed for this audit gives a production start, end or total for the reference. Auction houses date individual examples differently: Sotheby's catalogued its steel Cal. 50 watch as circa 1937; Antiquorum dated gold examples to 1942 and 1946; and Christie's described a Cal. 635 centre-seconds watch as circa 1948. Another Christie's catalogue labels a ref. 3130 circa 1955. These are house estimates for individual watches, and the disagreement does not set the reference's production span.
record runs from a circa-1938 Bonhams example through a circa-1946 Antiquorum lot, with the

clearest anchor at the late end: Phillips catalogued its 2021 sale watch, case 521'285, as "one
Phillips called its circa-1945 example one of the last generation of the model and noted a pantograph-engraved serial. Christie's later date estimate conflicts with that description. Neither catalogue establishes a factory close-out date. Case serials can be compared with the serial-number guide, but a chart alone cannot establish when an individual watch was assembled or sold.
of the last generation of the model's production run," noting the serial was engraved by
pantograph, a technique Rolex adopted only after the war. That places the tail of the 3130's run
into the mid-1940s, though it describes one specific watch rather than a confirmed close-out
date.

Movement notes
Movement notes
Every documented 3130 lot describes the same movement profile: a 9 3/4-ligne automatic, 17
The reference does not have one movement assignment in the auction record. Sotheby's described a 31mm steel example as a hand-wound Cal. 50 with 17 jewels and subsidiary seconds. Christie's catalogued a 14K gold watch as automatic Cal. 635, 19 jewels, with centre seconds. Antiquorum’s 2006 lot 256 names Cal. 635 in an automatic 3130 with subsidiary seconds. Other catalogues give only movement size or type, not a caliber number.
jewels where the jewel count is given, with subsidiary seconds at six. "9 3/4-ligne" identifies

the movement's diameter class rather than a single caliber number — a sizing convention Rolex
The 9¾-ligne automatic descriptions therefore should not be converted into a Cal. 620 attribution without a stamped movement or stronger reference-specific documentation. The movement guide treats the documented 3130 Cal. 50 and Cal. 635 examples as individual catalogue records; neither establishes every 3130's movement. Catalogues also report different jewel counts, so check the movement itself before using a count to identify a watch.
used across several Bubbleback-era automatic movements. The seconds layout and jewel count match
the Cal. 620 fitted to sibling reference 3131 rather than the sweep-seconds Cal. 630 used on
3132, but no 3130 lot names a caliber number outright or photographs a stamped movement, so the
attribution rests on the auction description matching the 620 family rather than a direct
confirmation. Christie's 2002 lot adds one further detail: a "nickel finished self-winding
movement with patented Super-Balance," the simplified balance Rolex introduced across the
9 3/4-ligne Bubbleback family in 1935.

Dial map
Dial map
The great majority of documented 3130s carry a silvered or brushed champagne dial with applied
Silvered and champagne dials with Arabic or baton markers appear in the auction sample. Other documented examples broaden that picture:
Arabic numerals, a small seconds register at six, and the standard "Rolex Oyster Perpetual /
Chronometer" signature. Three lots depart from that pattern.

Christie's 2014 Geneva sale offered an 18K gold example, case 1'320, with a black lacquer

* Antiquorum’s 2026 example has a dial signed “Serpico y Laino.” Sotheby’s also catalogued 3130s retailed by Cartier and Cuervo y Sobrinos; those retailer attributions do not show that their dials carry those names.

Retailer signatures require individual scrutiny. Rolex Passion Report documents Serpico y Laino signatures on other Rolex references and warns that the name has also been added to unsigned dials. That source is a collector lead, not authentication of a particular 3130. The California-dial lots are likewise individual examples, not proof of a standard or production-wide variant.

estimate). Both lots graded the case "excellent," so condition does not explain the gap between
the two results as cleanly as the retailer signature does — though a two-lot comparison across
different sale dates is a data point, not a demonstrated pricing rule for the reference.

Serpico y Laino operated out of Caracas, Venezuela, and its signature appears across the wider
Rolex catalogue. Rolex Passion Report documents it on references including 6062, 6034, 6036,
5512, 5508, GMT-Master 6542 and 1675, Explorer 6350, Thunderbird 6309, and assorted Submariner
and gold models. The same source carries an explicit warning that counterfeit Serpico y Laino
prints have been added to genuine, unsigned vintage Rolex dials specifically to chase the premium
a real signature commands; distinguishing a correct print from an incorrect one is a documented
point of comparison among specialists rather than something obvious at a glance. Both variants
documented here, the California dial and the Serpico y Laino signature, rest on a single lot
each. Real, but a lead rather than evidence of a wider production run.

The cited catalogues describe cases from 31mm to 33mm. Several gold examples are called tonneau-shaped; an Antiquorum 2008 lot describes a three-body case, and a separate 2013 Sotheby's lot calls its steel watch an “Oyster Commander.” Those descriptions do not establish one case construction or size for every 3130. The 1936 two-piece-case statement in the Field Manual applies to refs. 3131 and 3132, not to 3130.

Every documented 3130 shares the same tonneau-shaped Oyster case with a smooth fixed bezel and

screw-down crown and back. Case diameter is given as 32mm on the earlier Christie's and both
Antiquorum lots, and 33mm on a later Christie's online sale and a Bonhams London lot — the same
few-millimeter spread already documented on sibling 3131, where different houses appear to
measure the tonneau case at slightly different points rather than describing a distinct case
size. Weight is recorded on one example at approximately 42g, consistent with a solid gold case
rather than a gold-capped or bi-metal construction.

Bracelet and strap
Leather straps appear on several catalogued watches. Christie's described a 2014 California-dial example on an 18K gold expandable bracelet. Bonhams called the riveted Oyster bracelet on its 2019 pink-gold watch “associated”; that wording does not show it left Rolex with the watch.

Most documented 3130s are fitted to leather straps. One exception, a Bonhams London lot from

2019, carries an 18K rose gold riveted Oyster bracelet that the house's own catalogue calls
"associated" rather than original — period in style, but not established as delivered with that
specific watch. The 2014 Christie's California-dial example is fitted to an 18K gold expandable
bracelet.

The California-dial watch and the Phillips pantograph-serial example are the two strongest
results in the record, both well above their estimates. Eight results across four houses, two
currencies, and twenty-four years is a thin sample for pricing conclusions — condition, dial
rarity, and retailer signature all appear to move results more than any consistent baseline value
for the reference.
