Rolex Explorer I
The 6150 and 6350 show the early 3-6-9 layout associated with Explorer I; the 1953 Everest ascent supplied the name’s public setting. James Dowling also documents Oyster Explorer ref. 3136, dated 1936, with those words on the dial. This earlier use is separate from the later Explorer I line. Explorer I is a time-only Oyster watch with a black dial, Arabic 3-6-9 numerals and Mercedes hands. Case size changes later in the run: 36mm through the 114270, 39mm for the 214270, then 36mm and 40mm for the current 124270 and 224270.
The Explorer II arrived in 1971 with a fixed 24-hour hand and date display for use where day and night are difficult to distinguish. Its references and movement family are documented separately. This page covers Explorer I.
