The public launch was in 1956. Phillips dates case 111,654 to the fourth quarter of 1955 and case 134,692 to 1955. Monaco Legend lists case 111,695 as 1955 in its lot details, while its catalogue prose says 1956; the same house dates case 166,725 to 1956. Dorotheum dates case 166736 to 1956–57, but its 2017 listing dates case 166744 circa 1965. Pergola's unofficial chart puts 166744 in its 1956 band. The 2017 listing offers no readable view of the case number, leaving the catalogue date and serial chart in conflict. | |||
Reference histories commonly date the 6611 from 1957; some auction descriptions place examples in 1956, leaving the transition year uncertain. The serial-number guide records the individual case estimates and the limits of generic serial charts. | |||
==Movement notes== | ==Movement notes== | ||
Phillips lot 40 and Dorotheum lot 255 list Cal. 1555 for cases 111,654 and 166736. Phillips lot 41, Antiquorum lot 81, Bonhams lot 156, Monaco Legend lots 22 and 220, and Dorotheum's 2017 lot for case 166744 list Cal. 1055. Phillips's catalogue essay dates Cal. 1555 to 1959; Monochrome's Day-Date history places it with the later 1800-series generation. Those chronologies postdate the 1955 and 1956–57 dates assigned to cases 111,654 and 166736. A replacement movement or catalogue error could explain the 1555 labels, but the lot records leave the reason unresolved. Keep each attribution tied to its watch pending movement inspection. The disputed steel-prototype catalogue is a separate case and is excluded from this count. | |||
The | The movement reference describes the 1055 family and its disputed details. Antiquorum’s 2008 description calls its 1055 free-sprung and specifies a Breguet balance spring; other sources place that balance revision later. Keep the description tied to lot 81 and check each watch's movement directly. | ||

|} | |} | ||
Keep “factory dial” labels attached to their sale lots. Antiquorum grades one dial as good; Monaco Legend calls another patinated. A color change or unusual text needs independent evidence before it can define a factory variant. These records document several layouts; the full dial range has yet to be established. | |||

==Case, bezel and crown== | |||
Auction houses describe the 6511 as a 36mm, tonneau-shaped Oyster case with a fluted bezel. Antiquorum’s lot 81 calls its case three-body and lists a screwed-down crown and caseback; Phillips describes its 1955 example as thicker and more curved than contemporary Datejust cases, with a rounded screw-down back. Treat these as lot descriptions rather than a complete construction record for the reference. | |||
Phillips calls the early bezel “Millerighe”; “fluted” is the plain English term. Rolex says the Day-Date launched in 18ct gold or platinum. The located 6511 lots document yellow and pink gold. Other metals remain unverified. | |||

==Bracelets and clasps== | |||
Rolex says the President bracelet was made specially for the Day-Date and unveiled in 1956. Jake Ehrlich’s Rolex Magazine labels a pictured 6511 “pre-Presidential” and shows it on a Jubilee bracelet. Auction records also show mixed fitments: Phillips catalogues case 134,692 on a President bracelet with a clasp stamped 2.57; Monaco Legend describes case 166,725 on a Jubilee; and its 2023 case 111,695 was offered on a leather strap with a separate yellow-gold Big Logo bracelet listed among the accessories. Bonhams records another 6511 with a gold brick-link bracelet hallmarked 1959, three years after its stated 1956 Glasgow import mark. The available examples leave original delivery specific to each watch. | |||
Dorotheum explicitly says the bracelet on its 2017 case 166744 is not original. A bracelet or clasp date belongs to that component. Date the watch head from its own evidence, and assess original delivery separately. The bracelet guide explains the distinction. | |||

==Steel prototype attribution== | |||
Monaco Legend sold case 99,272 as a steel 6511 prototype with a white-gold bezel and riveted Oyster bracelet. Other published histories assign the small steel Day-Date prototype group to reference 6611. Keep Monaco Legend’s 6511 attribution separate from the standard specification while the reference remains disputed. | |||

Day-Date → 6511
The 6511 is the fluted-bezel member of the first Day-Date pair, alongside the smooth-bezel 6510. Rolex dates the Day-Date launch to 1956, while Phillips catalogs two 6511 cases as made in 1955. Auction records document yellow- and pink-gold cases, several dial layouts, and movement and bracelet combinations that vary by watch. These lots give examples, not a complete specification for the reference.

Place in the line
Sotheby’s and Monochrome identify the 6510 and 6511 as the 1956 launch pair, with a smooth or domed bezel on the 6510 and a fluted bezel on the 6511. Surviving examples also vary in dial inscriptions, movement labels, and bracelets.
Rolex dates the Day-Date debut and the President bracelet’s unveiling to 1956. Erik Slaven’s Monochrome history says the 6510 and 6511 came on Jubilee bracelets before the President became standard with the 6611. Jake Ehrlich’s Rolex Magazine describes a pictured 6511 as “pre-Presidential” and shows it on a Jubilee. Phillips catalogs a 1955-dated 6511 with a President bracelet and clasp stamped 2.57. The clasp stamp dates that bracelet component; these records do not settle original delivery for every watch.
Production outline
Movement notes
The movement reference describes the 1055 family and its disputed details. Antiquorum’s 2008 description calls its 1055 free-sprung and specifies a Breguet balance spring; other sources place that balance revision later. Keep the description tied to lot 81 and check each watch's movement directly.
Dial map
These auction records document several dial layouts:
| lot | catalogue description |
|---|---|
| Phillips, 2015, lot 40; case 111,654 | Champagne/gold dial with red “Day-Date” text at 6 and a red date wheel; the catalogue dates the case to Q4 1955 and lists Cal. 1555. |
| Phillips, 2015, lot 41; case 134,692 | Pink dial with no chronometer-certification line; the lot description also records red-and-black date numerals and “Day-Date” text at 12. |
| Antiquorum, 2008, lot 81 | White dial with “Officially Certified Chronometer,” applied gold batons, luminous dots and alpha hands. Antiquorum graded the dial separately; treat its wording as the house's description of this example. |
| Monaco Legend, 2024, lot 220; case 166,725 | Silver/white dial with red “DAY-DATE” text and “50 m = 165 ft” depth marking. The catalogue also notes luminous dots. |
| Monaco Legend, 2023, lot 22; case 111,695 | Grey/patinated dial and Portuguese day disc; the listing says the hour markers have no luminous dots. Its year field and catalogue prose disagree. |
| Dorotheum, 2026, lot 255; case 166736 | White dial with day and date displays; its catalogue lists Cal. 1555 and a chronometer certificate. |
Keep “factory dial” labels attached to their sale lots. Antiquorum grades one dial as good; Monaco Legend calls another patinated. A color change or unusual text needs independent evidence before it can define a factory variant. These records document several layouts; the full dial range has yet to be established.

Case, bezel and crown

Bracelets and clasps

Steel prototype attribution
Monaco Legend sold case 99,272 as a steel 6511 prototype with a white-gold bezel and riveted Oyster bracelet. Other published histories assign the small steel Day-Date prototype group to reference 6611. Keep Monaco Legend’s 6511 attribution separate from the standard specification while the reference remains disputed.
