The Bubbleback is Rolex's first Oyster Perpetual family. The automatic rotor was too thick for a flat case, so Rolex domed the caseback over the movement and created the profile collectors now call Bubbleback. Production runs from 1933 into the mid-1950s, ending when cal. 1030 makes a flat back possible. Italian collectors call the standard 32mm case Ovetto and the 36mm cases Ovettone.

The Bubbleback is Rolex's early Oyster Perpetual family. The automatic rotor needed a deeper case than a hand-wound movement, so Rolex domed the back over the mechanism. Later references with thinner movements could use flatter backs. Auction catalogues date some large no-date examples, including ref. 5026, into the late 1950s; those estimates do not set an endpoint for the whole family. Italian collectors call the standard 32mm case Ovetto and the 36mm cases Ovettone.

Pre-Oyster / Submarine (1922–1926)
Before the Oyster was the "Rolex Submarine." Wilsdorf's trademark was registered 31 March 1922, 31 years before the 1953 dive watch. Based on Jean Finger's 1921 Swiss patent for a double-case hermetic design, the inner watch sealed inside an outer protective case with a screw-down bezel. Winding or setting the watch required unscrewing the outer case.
Rolex dates its Submarine to 1922 and describes a watch hinged inside a second case, with a screw-down bezel and crystal; reaching the crown required opening the outer case. David Boettcher distinguishes Hermetic watches sold under the Submarine name from watches branded Rolex. Jean Finger's 1921 Swiss patent CH 89276 describes a stem-wound watch with a protective case. Boettcher notes that Wilsdorf's 1922 British patent describes the same case design but does not name Finger. == Pre-Perpetual Oyster ==

Before the Bubbleback, Rolex produced manual-wind Oysters in the 1926 case form. Most carried 10½-ligne or 9¾-ligne Aegler Hunter movements at Prima, Extra Prima, or Ultra Prima grades. Glasgow import hallmarks are common on British-market examples. The movement architecture is traditional manual wind; the case is already recognizably Oyster.
Before the Bubbleback, Rolex produced manual-wind Oysters. Auction catalogues identify several with 10½- or 9¾-ligne Aegler Hunter movements at Prima, Extra Prima or Ultra Prima grades. Ref. 1925 lots also name Prima and Ultra Prima grades, but do not assign a numeric caliber. Glasgow import hallmarks recur on British-market examples; the assay date belongs to the case, not necessarily the watch’s manufacture.

Manual-wind Oyster Precision (1939–1948)
Other manual-wind Oyster references
Manual-wind Oyster Precision references ran in parallel with the automatic Bubbleback through the 1940s. The cases are tonneau or cushion Oysters with the same hermetic screw-back architecture; the difference is the movement, a Hunter-derived manual instead of the Cal. 520 / 620 / 630 rotor automatics that defined the Bubbleback line.
Manual-wind Oyster references ran alongside the automatic Bubbleback. Auction records describe tonneau or cushion cases and manual movements; the automatic Bubbleback line used rotor movements.

The first production Perpetual. Cal. 520 (Hunter 8¾′′′) with a full 360-degree rotor. Early examples carry the Didactic engravings: step-by-step service instructions in French cut directly into the movement plate because no watchmaker outside Aegler had ever opened a Rolex automatic.
The Vintage Rolex Field Manual identifies ref. 1858 as the first Bubbleback and lists Cal. 520. Vintage & Prestige also lists Cal. 520 for stock W2107; Hodinkee's 2024 family guide assigns Cal. 620 to the first series beginning with ref. 1858. Antiquorum dates one example to 1933 and another to circa 1935; Phillips dates case 52,736 to circa 1935, while Antiquorum Hong Kong gives circa 1930s. WatchNet Japan lists a stainless-steel example, product A-6378, at 30.5 mm with a four-part case. Antiquorum, Aste Bolaffi, and WatchNet describe engraved watchmaker instructions on individual watches.

First Oyster chronograph (1939–1945)
Straight-lug Empire Oyster
Rolex's first chronograph in the waterproof Oyster case. Italian collectors call it the Monoblocco (monobloc) or Barilotto (little barrel) for the case machined from a single billet. British POWs at Stalag Luft III ordered the reference during WWII; Wilsdorf honored the orders, shipped the watches to the camps, and deferred payment until after the war.
Collector Marcus Siems groups the straight-lug refs. 3548 and 3716 under the name Empire; Antiquorum says period advertisements used the Italian form “Impero.” The 3548 has centre seconds and the 3716 subsidiary seconds. Catalogue dates for 3716 examples range from circa 1940 to an outlying 1950s attribution, so the group does not supply a confirmed production span. See 3548 and 3716.

Early two-pusher Oyster chronograph (1939–mid-1940s)
The 3525 is commonly described as the first two-pusher chronograph in Rolex’s Oyster case; earlier Oyster-cased monopusher chronographs existed. Its one-piece upper case gave rise to the collector term Monoblocco. Some surviving examples have documented wartime orders and deferred payment, including those catalogued for Clive Nutting and Leon Brownlee.

Ref. 5026 is documented in 36 mm steel automatic examples with subsidiary seconds. Auction catalogues date individual watches from circa 1946 to circa 1958, but those estimates do not define the reference's production span. Aste Bolaffi assigns automatic Cal. 720/18 jewels to case 443371; other catalogues do not name a caliber. == Large no-date Oyster Perpetual: ref. 5028 ==

Ref. 5028 is a large, no-date automatic Oyster Perpetual catalogued in steel and 18K gold, usually grouped with the Ovettone Bubblebacks. Case measurements in sale records are 35–36 mm. Monaco Legend dates case 412191 to 1945; Christie's gives circa 1946 for that same case and dates case 493076 to 1946. Other dated examples include Monaco Legend case 411813 (1958) and an unnumbered Antiquorum watch dated to the 1960s. These catalogue dates do not establish a production span. Records show centre-seconds and dual-seconds dials; movement descriptions vary between 10½ and 11 lignes and do not settle a single caliber. == Late small Bubbleback examples ==

Auction catalogues date individual ref. 5002 watches from circa 1945 to circa 1952, and ref. 5006 examples from 1948 into the 1950s. Dealer and auction listings also identify ref. 5045 examples around 1949–50; the Loupe This lot includes a photograph of the inner caseback stamp. The 5002 records describe 23–26 mm steel, two-tone, and gold cases; 5006 records give 29–30 mm steel and gold examples. For 5013, Doyle and Linckersdorff list solid-gold watches; Curious Curio, Cool Auction, and GMTBroker describe steel cases with gold bezels. The examined listings show several dial layouts, but do not establish their order or factory originality. Cool Auction assigns Cal. 630 / 630NA to its individual watch. A Rolex Forums chart gives 9.75 lignes, a size notation rather than a caliber. One marketplace listing describes a centre-seconds chapter-ring 5013, but its photograph shows no reference stamp or caseback, so that attribution is unverified. These dates and configurations belong to individual records, not production endpoints. Christie’s describes its circa-1940 ref. 6006 as a Bubble Back. Later Christie’s and Antiquorum catalogues document gold examples dated 1952–55, with both central and subsidiary seconds. The 1952 Antiquorum watch is case 927300, with Cal. 520 and a restored subsidiary-seconds dial. These lot dates do not establish production boundaries. See the 6006 record. == Triple calendar: Padellone (1949–1953) ==

The Bubbleback era's complication flagship. "Padellone" means "big pan" in Italian, an augmentative of padella ("pan") that follows the same naming logic as Ovetto/Ovettone. Triple calendar (day, month, date) plus moonphase. The Padellone case is not a waterproof Oyster; the calendar mechanism would not fit a screw-down Oyster architecture, so Rolex used a snap caseback.

Post-Bubbleback / Super Oyster (1952–1953)
The hinge between the Bubbleback era and the professional-family split. Cal. 1030, the first Rolex-designed-from-scratch caliber and a bi-directional automatic, made the flat caseback possible and ended the Bubbleback profile. The 6098 "Super Oyster" carried 60m water resistance into the Oyster Perpetual line, preceding the Submariner by a year and anticipating the sport-watch emphasis Rolex would formalize with the 1953 Explorer, Submariner, and GMT-Master launches.
Cal. 1030, a bidirectional automatic, allowed Rolex to use a flatter caseback than the Bubbleback profile. A September 1953 letter from Bruno Vailati thanks Rolex for seven “Super Oyster” watches supplied to his Red Sea expedition; the letter does not identify them by reference. Perezcope attributes Vailati’s own watch to ref. 6098. Monaco Legend later used “Super Oyster” for ref. 6029, case 706020. Antiquorum dates that same case to 1950 and describes its domed, screw-down back. Abell Watchmakers calls a separately numbered ref. 6029 “Big Bubble Back.” These are source-specific labels, not evidence of a single model definition. Rolex Oyster & Bubbleback

Vintage Rolex Bubbleback advertisement
Vintage Rolex Bubbleback advertisement

The Bubbleback is Rolex's early Oyster Perpetual family. The automatic rotor needed a deeper case than a hand-wound movement, so Rolex domed the back over the mechanism. Later references with thinner movements could use flatter backs. Auction catalogues date some large no-date examples, including ref. 5026, into the late 1950s; those estimates do not set an endpoint for the whole family. Italian collectors call the standard 32mm case Ovetto and the 36mm cases Ovettone.

Common entry points

Identifying a first-generation Bubbleback?
The Field Manual identifies ref. 1858 as the first Bubbleback and lists Cal. 520. Catalogued watches carry dates of 1933, circa 1935, and the 1930s.
Cross-checking a two-piece case Bubbleback?
First two-piece case Bubbleback. The 1936 case simplification, precious-metal only (9K, 14K, 18K yellow and pink gold), Cal 620 with sub-seconds.
Working from a Luxury Model dial photo?
The "Luxury Model" name appears in period advertising; documented examples and manual entries show several bezel and seconds configurations.

Pre-Oyster / Submarine (1922–1926)

Rolex dates its Submarine to 1922 and describes a watch hinged inside a second case, with a screw-down bezel and crystal; reaching the crown required opening the outer case. David Boettcher distinguishes Hermetic watches sold under the Submarine name from watches branded Rolex. Jean Finger's 1921 Swiss patent CH 89276 describes a stem-wound watch with a protective case. Boettcher notes that Wilsdorf's 1922 British patent describes the same case design but does not name Finger. Rolex, “Building an impenetrable defence”; Boettcher, “Rolex Hermetic”; Boettcher, “Rolex Submarine?”

Reference Production Movement Case Key distinction
3666 Cargills catalogue: 1924; Bonhams: circa 1925 Manual, 15 jewels in catalogues; caliber unconfirmed 32–33mm silver hinged-case Hermetique Cargills calls its watch “Submarine Hermetique” and reports Rolex signatures; Phillips catalogues a separate 1940 chronograph as ref. 3666 (Bold Timepieces; Bonhams; Watches of Knightsbridge, lot 376; Phillips)

Pre-Perpetual Oyster

Before the Bubbleback, Rolex produced manual-wind Oysters. Auction catalogues identify several with 10½- or 9¾-ligne Aegler Hunter movements at Prima, Extra Prima or Ultra Prima grades. Ref. 1925 lots also name Prima and Ultra Prima grades, but do not assign a numeric caliber. Glasgow import hallmarks recur on British-market examples; the assay date belongs to the case, not necessarily the watch’s manufacture.

First Bubbleback

Two-piece case era (1936–1944)

Rolex introduced a two-piece Bubbleback case with refs. 3131 and 3132 in 1936. Other references still appear in catalogues as three-body cases, including the 3134. Cal. 620 (subsidiary seconds) and Cal. 630 (sweep seconds) became the dominant automatic calibers, developed by Emile Borer at Aegler.

Straight-lug Empire Oyster

Large no-date Oyster Perpetual: ref. 5026

The reference article records the case, dial, movement, and bracelet evidence. Large no-date Oyster Perpetual: ref. 5028

See the case and dial record for ref. 5028. Auction catalogues document separate 5029 examples dated circa 1947 and 1949, in two-tone steel and gold, yellow gold, and pink gold. The 35–36 mm cases carry different dial and bezel layouts. Catalogued movement descriptions vary between A.295, “Super Balance 730,” and 9¾-line, 18-jewel movements; each remains tied to its own example. Late small Bubbleback examples

Triple calendar: Padellone (1949–1953)

"Padellone" means "big pan" in Italian, an augmentative of padella ("pan") that follows the same naming logic as Ovetto/Ovettone. Triple calendar (day, month, date) plus moonphase. The Padellone uses a snap caseback rather than the screw-down construction of an Oyster case.

Ref. 4392

Auction catalogues identify ref. 4392 as an Oyster Perpetual and date individual examples from circa 1945 through one circa-1959 estimate. The records describe 31–32 mm steel and gold cases and identify Cal. 630 / 630NA in several watches. Antiquorum's case 607544 pairs a Cal. 630 catalogue attribution with a small-seconds dial it considers probably reprinted; its photos do not show the movement. Ref. 4919

Auction catalogues identify ref. 4919 as an Oyster Perpetual and date individual examples from circa 1947 to the 1950s; Farsettiarte dates a caseback-marked example circa 1960. A secondary copy of an Antiquorum catalogue assigns one example to the 1930s, in conflict with those later dates; see the 4919 article for the source and limits. None sets a production span. Post-Bubbleback / Super Oyster (1952–1953)
