The Milgauss is Rolex's antimagnetic tool watch. The line began in 1956 with the 6541, whose movement sat inside a soft-iron shield rated to 1,000 gauss. Rolex links the model to scientists working around magnetic equipment and says researchers at CERN tested early examples. The family has three main reference groups: 6541, 1019, and the 116400 series, which Rolex discontinued in 2023.
The Milgauss is Rolex’s antimagnetic tool watch. Christie’s dates two ref. 6543 examples to around 1955; Rolex dates the 6541 to 1956. The line continued with the 1019 and returned as the 116400 series in 2007. Rolex discontinued the latter in 2023 and says CERN researchers tested early Milgauss watches.

The defining construction is the shield. A soft-iron ring and a matching cover surround the movement and give magnetic flux a path around the regulating parts. The case and movement details changed over time, but that protection remained the reason for the Milgauss name.

The first cataloged Milgauss used a honeycomb gilt dial on a webbed laminated copper plate, a lightning-bolt seconds hand, a rotating engraved bezel, and a Twinlock crown. The short production run leaves few surviving records. Surviving 6541s are generally associated with early 412xxx serials, but the serial evidence is too limited to treat that range as an absolute rule.
Christie’s dates two 6543 examples to circa 1955 and describes honeycomb dials and rotating bezels. Rolex dates the 6541 to 1956; auction records document lightning-bolt hands, honeycomb dials and more than one bezel and movement configuration. The 6541 case numbers cluster around 412xxx in the examples reviewed here, but that sample is too small to serve as a serial-year rule.
