The <code>116500LN</code> is the steel ceramic Daytona. Two dials, one movement, one bracelet, and the watch that turned the modern Daytona into the market’s waitlist shorthand.
The 116500LN is the 40mm steel Daytona made from 2016 until the 126500LN replaced it in 2023. It uses caliber 4130, a black Cerachrom tachymeter bezel, and contrasting white or black dials. The case and movement remain close to the preceding 116520; the bezel and dial treatment are the visible changes.

What makes the reference a landmark is not the spec sheet but the market behavior. The 116500LN turned the modern Daytona into the shorthand waitlist watch and stayed there for years.

The 116500LN replaced the 116520 after its sixteen-year run. Both use the 40mm steel case family and caliber 4130; the 116500LN changes to a black Cerachrom bezel and contrasting subdial layouts. The reference specification is separate from allocation and resale conditions.
At Baselworld 2016 Rolex presented the ceramic-bezel 116500LN alongside the existing steel-bezel model. The 116520 was then discontinued as the new reference reached the market; published histories do not give a long production overlap.

The 116500LN replaces the 116520, which had run for sixteen years on the same 40mm case, same caliber 4130, and an aluminum tachymeter bezel that scratched and faded. The switch is purely a bezel swap, on paper. In practice the ceramic-era launch reset the reference's position from "respected but not front-of-queue" to "the single watch that defines the modern allocation economy." That repositioning is what the 116500LN is known for, more than any mechanical change.
The 126500LN took over in March 2023 with the same ceramic bezel, a slightly thinner 11.9mm case, a reworked Oysterlock clasp, and the new caliber 4131. Rolex reshaped the bezel geometry around the platinum PVD numerals and thinned the subdial rings, but the reference stayed a 40mm steel ceramic Daytona. That leaves the 116500LN holding the older case proportions and the caliber 4130 Rolex had been refining since 2000, a combination now closed off by the end of production.

The 126500LN took over in March 2023 with the same ceramic bezel, a slightly thinner 11.9mm case, a reworked Oysterlock clasp, and the new caliber 4131. Rolex moved the platinum PVD numerals to a reshaped bezel geometry and thinned the subdial rings on the dial, but kept the reference a 40mm steel ceramic Daytona. The 116500LN is the one you want if you prefer the existing case proportions and the 4130 movement that Rolex had been refining since 2000, and the one whose market position is now frozen because production has ended.
The 116500LN retains the earlier steel-case profile and unframed monobloc ceramic bezel. The 126500LN revised the lug and bezel geometry and added a metal bezel surround while remaining a 40mm steel Daytona.

The precious-metal siblings across the same case generation include the two-tone Rolesor 116503, the yellow gold 116508, and the white gold 116509 with ceramic-bezel variants added gradually across the generation. The 116500LN sits at the entry point of the ceramic family — the steel rollout that made ceramic available at the lowest retail rung the reference line offers.
The precious-metal siblings on the same case generation are the two-tone Rolesor 116503, the yellow gold 116508, and the white gold 116509, all three keeping engraved gold bezels while the parallel LN references carried Cerachrom. The 116500LN is the steel member of that generation and the first steel Daytona reference with a Cerachrom bezel.

The table reads as a bezel-and-dial change rather than a full redesign. That is accurate. The 116500LN keeps the 116520's case, its movement, its bracelet architecture, and most of its dial printing. What moves is the bezel material, the lume, and the visible treatment of the subdials. Everything else holds.
The 116500LN retains the 116520 case, caliber 4130, and bracelet architecture. The principal documented changes are the Cerachrom bezel, Chromalight, and contrasting subdial treatment.

Production outline
Production outline
Published sources treat the 116500LN as one production generation. The two dial layouts, caliber 4130, Cerachrom bezel, and Oyster bracelet remain consistent; minor printing differences in collector photographs are not an established factory variant system.

The 116500LN does not have the layered internal map that defines vintage Daytona references. The caliber 4130, the Cerachrom bezel, the Oyster bracelet, and the two dial options held constant for the full seven-year run. The external change from year to year is narrow enough that the reference reads as a single-era production, and most reference-guide editorial treats it that way.
Rolex introduced the 126500LN at Watches & Wonders Geneva in March 2023. Auction catalogues and reference histories therefore use 2023 as the end of the 116500LN production run; later retail deliveries do not establish later assembly.

Forum collectors have documented minor dial-printing drift across the 116500LN run. The useful point is not to invent a full mark system, but to accept that the reference is not perfectly static from 2016 to 2023.
Movement notes
Production end is documented variously. The most precise claim places the final 116500LN production run at 27 March 2023, coinciding with the 126500LN announcement at Watches & Wonders Geneva. Other sources round to "2023" or "2024" without a precise boundary. The conservative read: 116500LN production ended around the March 2023 successor launch, with allocated examples continuing to reach retail into 2024.
Rolex introduced caliber 4130 in 2000 on the 116520. It powered the steel Daytona through the 116500LN run, with a 72-hour reserve and the same core architecture.

Movement notes
The architecture uses a column wheel and vertical clutch with a stated 72-hour power reserve. The 116500LN uses the same caliber as the 116520 without a reference-specific movement change.

Caliber 4130 is the first fully in-house Rolex chronograph movement. Rolex introduced it in 2000 on the 116520, and the 4130 powered every steel Daytona reference from that launch through the end of 116500LN production in 2023. Twenty-three years of production on a single movement is exceptional for any chronograph caliber.
The 4130 replaced the Zenith-based caliber 4030 with a longer reserve, a full balance bridge, a free-sprung Microstella balance, and a Parachrom hairspring. Hodinkee also records construction details such as a hairspring protection block and playless chronograph-train gears. These are caliber features shared with the 116520, not 116500LN variant markers.

The 4130 story is straightforward here: 72-hour reserve, vertical clutch, column wheel, and the same in-house architecture that already made the 116520 the modern Daytona template.
The 4131 succeeded it on the 126500LN, keeping the column wheel and vertical clutch and adding the Chronergy escapement Rolex had rolled across the three-hand sport lines through the late 2010s and early 2020s. The 4131 keeps the column wheel and vertical clutch and remains rated at roughly 72 hours; its escapement and other details differ from the 4130.

The 4130's replacement on the 126500LN is the caliber 4131, which keeps the column wheel and vertical clutch architecture while adding the Chronergy escapement Rolex had rolled across the three-hand sport lines through the 2010s and earlier 2020s. The efficiency gain is measured in real-world precision rather than power reserve, which stays at roughly 72 hours.

The 116500LN-0001 is the white-dial option. The dial is a silver-white lacquer with three black snailed subdials — the hours counter at 6, the seconds counter at 9, and the 30-minute counter at 3. Applied 18k white-gold indices, polished and filled with Chromalight, frame the subdials. A red <code>DAYTONA</code> signature arcs above the six o'clock subdial. The date window at three is absent, which is consistent with the Daytona's always-chronograph-first layout.
The 116500LN-0001 is the white-dial option. It has black snailed subdials at 3, 6, and 9, applied white-gold hour markers with Chromalight, and a red DAYTONA signature above six. There is no date display.

The Panda label is collector shorthand for any watch dial that matches a white face against contrasting dark subdials, named for the visual resemblance to the animal. Rolex does not use the term on any of its documentation. The white-black contrast has been on the Daytona since the 1960s Paul Newman variants, and the 116500LN is the first steel ceramic-bezel reference to carry that layout into modern production.

The 116500LN-0002 is the black-dial option. Layout matches the Panda: three subdials at 6, 9, and 3, applied white-gold indices, no date. The subdials are finished in a silver-grey snailed treatment that reads as a softer contrast against the black base than the crisp black-on-white of the Panda. The DAYTONA signature stays red, and the minute track sits in white printing.

The 116500LN-0002 is the black-dial option. The layout is the same — three subdials at 6, 9, 3, applied white-gold indices, no date — but the subdials are finished in a silver-grey snailed treatment that reads as a softer contrast against the black dial than the crisp black-on-white of the Panda. The <code>DAYTONA</code> signature stays red, and the minute track sits in white printing.

Market behaviour on the two dials diverges, with Panda examples consistently trading above black-dial ones. The reason is still unproven, but the price gap itself is real enough to treat as fact.
The two dials are distinct catalogue options. Auction comparisons vary with condition, papers, and sale date.

Dial printing drift
Dial printing drift
Forum threads track small printing differences across the run on both dials. Slightly thinner font weight on some mid-run bottom-line text, minor spacing shifts in the lower half, and subtle subdial-texture variation all show up under macro lighting. None of it has hardened into a named variant, and no collector taxonomy for the 116500LN has formed. These observations remain descriptive; no named dial variant has been established for the run.

None of these has crossed the threshold from "photographed on some examples" to "documented Mark variant." A collector taxonomy for the 116500LN has not formed. The run reads as one long production with minor supplier drift visible only under close inspection.

Case
Case
The case is 40mm in 904L Oystersteel, about 12.2mm thick, with brushed top surfaces and polished flanks. Lug-to-lug runs at roughly 47mm, unchanged from the 116520. The case dimensions and bracelet architecture remain close to the 116520, while the bezel material changes to Cerachrom.

The case is 40mm in 904L Oystersteel, approximately 12.2mm thick, with brushed top surfaces and polished case-flank treatment. Lug-to-lug runs at roughly 47mm, consistent with the 116520 that came before it. Rolex did not resize the case for the 116500LN; the bezel change did not require case tooling changes. The result is that a 116520 and a 116500LN wear identically on the wrist save for the bezel material. Anyone buying the 116500LN for the ceramic alone was getting the identical case and bracelet the 116520 had carried since 2000.
Bezel
Bezel
The Cerachrom bezel is a monobloc ceramic ring with a moulded tachymeter scale. Platinum deposited by PVD forms the numerals and graduations. It replaces the aluminum insert used on the 116520.

The Cerachrom bezel is the reason the reference exists. Rolex produces it as a monobloc ceramic piece, meaning the entire bezel ring including the tachymeter track is a single piece of ceramic rather than a ceramic insert seated inside a steel ring. The tachymeter numerals and scale graduations are deposited through a PVD (physical vapor deposition) process using platinum, which gives them the cool grey-silver cast that distinguishes the modern ceramic bezel from an aluminum insert at any distance.
Cerachrom reached the Daytona before this reference did. The Everose 116515LN carried a ceramic bezel from 2011 and the platinum 116506 from 2013. The 116500LN brought that bezel material to the steel Daytona for the first time.

The numerical geometry shifted from the 116520 as part of the ceramic transition. Aluminum-insert tachymeter scales sat on a flat radial layout; the 116500LN tachymeter numerals follow a subtly curved axis that matches the ceramic bezel's surface tension and firing tolerances. The change is imperceptible on a wrist shot and obvious side-by-side with a 116520.
The numeral geometry moved with the material. Aluminum-insert tachymeter scales sat on a flat radial layout; the 116500LN numerals follow a subtly curved axis matched to the ceramic's surface tension and firing tolerances. The difference is easiest to see when the two bezels are compared directly.

The ceramic itself is scratch-resistant against anything shy of a diamond-edged tool and fade-proof against UV. The practical implication is that a 116500LN bezel surfaces any flaw as an impact mark — ceramic breaks before it scratches — rather than as the progressive wear pattern an aluminum bezel accumulates.
Ceramic resists ordinary scratching and colour change, but it can chip or crack under impact. Inspect the bezel for chips, cracks, and damaged numerals rather than assuming it is indestructible.

Crystal
The chronograph pushers on the 116500LN are screw-down, consistent with the rest of the Daytona line since the 6263. Pusher-screw feel and travel match the 116520. Unscrewing the pushers before operating the chronograph remains the single habitual quirk of Daytona wear, and the 116500LN does not adjust it.
The chronograph pushers are screw-down, as on the 116520 and earlier screw-down Daytona references. Their operation and travel are part of the watch-specific inspection.

Clasp
Clasp
The clasp is Oysterlock with Easylink. Oysterlock is the locking safety flap Rolex uses across the modern Professional line; Easylink is the toolless extension, a flip-out internal tab that adds five millimetres in a single step. The Glidelock on the ceramic Submariner adjusts continuously across a wider range. Easylink gives one fixed increment, less travel but faster to deploy on the wrist.

Oysterlock with Easylink. Oysterlock is the locking safety flap that Rolex uses across the modern Professional line. Easylink is Rolex's toolless 5mm micro-adjustment system: a flip-out internal tab that can be used to extend the bracelet length by five millimetres in a single step without tools. Unlike the Glidelock on the ceramic Submariner, Easylink is a single binary extension rather than a continuous adjustment, so it is more limited in range but faster to deploy on the wrist.
The cited bracelet specification remains the same between the 116520 and the 116500LN. The 126500LN reworked the clasp architecture, which leaves the 116500LN as the last Daytona on the older Oysterlock.

The Easylink implementation on the 116500LN is the same as on the 116520. Nothing in the bracelet system changed between the two references. The 126500LN successor reworked the clasp architecture, which places the 116500LN as the last Daytona with the older Oysterlock mechanism.

Antiquorum catalogued an Asprey-customised red-dial 116500LN in 2025 as part of a stated 25-piece series, with a customised dial and caseback. The lot is evidence of a retailer-linked presentation branch, not a Rolex catalogue variant. Other customised or double-signed examples need the same lot-specific documentation.
Other 116500LN watches surface with engraved casebacks for institutional customers or double-signed dials for retailer anniversaries. Those are personalisation on a standard watch, not distinct reference variants.
Market and collector context
Auction results and asking prices vary by date, condition, papers, and venue. They do not establish a fixed value for every 116500LN.

A small number of 116500LN watches left Rolex's production flow with a second dial signature or a bezel-colour swap tied to a specific retailer. The most visible of these is the Asprey program, a two-colour limited series of 25 pieces each delivered through Asprey's London boutique and sold from a back room rather than the retail floor.

The Asprey Daytonas are the reference's clearest special branch. The important point is simple: dial signature, colored tachymeter insert, tiny production, and no Rolex-catalog confirmation.

Beyond the Asprey program, regular-production 116500LN watches have appeared with engraved casebacks for institutional customers and occasional double-signed dials for retailer anniversaries. These are one-off or small-run personalization layers on standard 116500LN watches and do not represent distinct Rolex reference variants.
Prices softened after the 2022 peak, with later records varying by dial, condition, and papers. The 116500LN is the last steel Daytona on caliber 4130 and the first steel Daytona with a Cerachrom bezel; those are reference facts, separate from market cycles.

Market and collector context
The 126500LN replaced it in 2023 with caliber 4131 and revised case details. Auction comparisons should keep the two references separate.

Few Rolex references have moved the secondary market the way the 116500LN did. At launch in spring 2016, grey-market dealers were selling the white dial at close to seventy percent over list within days of Baselworld. Year-by-year market tracking through the late 2010s showed the reference compounding that premium: roughly €17,000 in 2016, €20,000 in 2018, €23,000 across 2019–2020, then a steep acceleration into 2021 when white-dial examples traded routinely above €30,000 and peak Chrono24 listings went past €35,000. GBP prices tracked similarly — retail around £10,500, Q4 2021 at roughly £32,000, peak listings at £35,000.

The 116500LN also anchored the broader 2020–2022 luxury-watch speculation bubble. Authorized-dealer waitlists ran for years. Successful applicants had to demonstrate long purchase histories with the dealer, often on lesser references, before an allocation opened. Flipping was actively policed, with Rolex restricting future allocations to buyers who resold within windows set by individual dealers.

The market correction from early 2023 onward brought 116500LN pricing back toward the mid-$20,000s for white-dial examples and into the low $20,000s for black-dial examples by 2024. The reference still trades well above retail, consistent with its discontinued and ceramic-era status, but the multiples-of-retail era is over. For buyers entering now, the argument is less about market speculation and more about the reference itself: the last steel Daytona on the 40mm case, the last on the 4130 movement, and the first to carry Cerachrom.

The successor 126500LN has absorbed the waitlist phenomenon without matching the secondary-market peak of its predecessor. That is part of how markets work — and part of why the 116500LN will likely be the one that reads as the definitional ceramic Daytona in ten years of collector retrospection, regardless of whether the 126500LN is the objectively better watch.

Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 116500LN, black dial
Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 116500LN, black dial

The 116500LN is the 40mm steel Daytona made from 2016 until the 126500LN replaced it in 2023. It uses caliber 4130, a black Cerachrom tachymeter bezel, and contrasting white or black dials. The case and movement remain close to the preceding 116520; the bezel and dial treatment are the visible changes.

The 116500LN retains the earlier steel-case profile and unframed monobloc ceramic bezel. The 126500LN revised the lug and bezel geometry and added a metal bezel surround while remaining a 40mm steel Daytona.

What changed from the 116520

feature 116520 116500LN
bezel aluminum tachymeter, engraved and painted Cerachrom ceramic monobloc, platinum PVD numerals
tachymeter numerals straight-line geometry around the bezel shifted to a curved-axis layout for ceramic fitment
lume Super-LumiNova (green glow) Chromalight (blue glow)
dial white or black with colour-matched subdials on late production, and contrasting subdials on the 2000 launch white with black subdials, or black with grey-silver subdials, both contrasting throughout the run
case finishing brushed/polished contrast retained same, with Oystersteel 904L unchanged
movement caliber 4130 caliber 4130, unchanged

The 116500LN retains the 116520 case, caliber 4130, and bracelet architecture. The principal documented changes are the Cerachrom bezel, Chromalight, and contrasting subdial treatment.

Production outline

Published sources treat the 116500LN as one production generation. The two dial layouts, caliber 4130, Cerachrom bezel, and Oyster bracelet remain consistent; minor printing differences in collector photographs are not an established factory variant system.

Rolex introduced the 126500LN at Watches & Wonders Geneva in March 2023. Auction catalogues and reference histories therefore use 2023 as the end of the 116500LN production run; later retail deliveries do not establish later assembly.

Movement notes

Rolex introduced caliber 4130 in 2000 on the 116520. It powered the steel Daytona through the 116500LN run, with a 72-hour reserve and the same core architecture.

The architecture uses a column wheel and vertical clutch with a stated 72-hour power reserve. The 116500LN uses the same caliber as the 116520 without a reference-specific movement change.

Dial map

Panda (white dial)

The 116500LN-0001 is the white-dial option. It has black snailed subdials at 3, 6, and 9, applied white-gold hour markers with Chromalight, and a red DAYTONA signature above six. There is no date display.

Panda is collector shorthand for a white face against contrasting dark subdials; Rolex does not use the term in its catalogues.

Black dial

The 116500LN-0002 is the black-dial option. Layout matches the Panda: three subdials at 6, 9, and 3, applied white-gold indices, no date. The subdials are finished in a silver-grey snailed treatment that reads as a softer contrast against the black base than the crisp black-on-white of the Panda. The DAYTONA signature stays red, and the minute track sits in white printing.

The two dials are distinct catalogue options. Auction comparisons vary with condition, papers, and sale date.

Dial printing drift

Forum threads track small printing differences across the run on both dials. Slightly thinner font weight on some mid-run bottom-line text, minor spacing shifts in the lower half, and subtle subdial-texture variation all show up under macro lighting. None of it has hardened into a named variant, and no collector taxonomy for the 116500LN has formed. These observations remain descriptive; no named dial variant has been established for the run.

Case, bezel, crystal, and crown notes

Bezel

Panda 116500LN bezel macro
Monobloc Cerachrom: platinum PVD graduations on fired ceramic

The Cerachrom bezel is a monobloc ceramic ring with a moulded tachymeter scale. Platinum deposited by PVD forms the numerals and graduations. It replaces the aluminum insert used on the 116520.

Cerachrom reached the Daytona before this reference did. The Everose 116515LN carried a ceramic bezel from 2011 and the platinum 116506 from 2013. The 116500LN brought that bezel material to the steel Daytona for the first time.

Ceramic resists ordinary scratching and colour change, but it can chip or crack under impact. Inspect the bezel for chips, cracks, and damaged numerals rather than assuming it is indestructible.

Crystal

Flat sapphire, and no Cyclops, because the Daytona carries no date. Thickness and radius match the 116520 exactly. Rolex's published documentation specifies no anti-reflective coating.

Crown

Triplock screw-down with crown guards, rated with the case to 100m. The crown is dimensionally identical to the 116520's, carrying the Rolex coronet and the three dots that mark Triplock sealing.

Pushers

Screw-down pushers and the Triplock crown flank

The chronograph pushers are screw-down, as on the 116520 and earlier screw-down Daytona references. Their operation and travel are part of the watch-specific inspection.

Bracelets, end links, clasps, and packaging notes

Bracelet

Oyster, 20mm at the lugs, solid links throughout, with solid end links coded into the case. Measurement and construction are identical to the 116520 bracelet.

The cited bracelet specification remains the same between the 116520 and the 116500LN. The 126500LN reworked the clasp architecture, which leaves the 116500LN as the last Daytona on the older Oysterlock.

Packaging

Standard Rolex green box of the 2010s-2020s era with warranty card, Superlative Chronometer tag, booklets, and hang tags. Warranty format during the 116500LN run was the credit-card-style card rather than the earlier paper card. Full-set records may include the card, tag, and both booklets; 2016 examples can show transitional hang-tag formatting.

Special editions

Asprey red-dial 116500LN
Asprey red-dial 116500LN limited edition

Prices softened after the 2022 peak, with later records varying by dial, condition, and papers. The 116500LN is the last steel Daytona on caliber 4130 and the first steel Daytona with a Cerachrom bezel; those are reference facts, separate from market cycles.

The 126500LN replaced it in 2023 with caliber 4131 and revised case details. Auction comparisons should keep the two references separate.
