<small>Bubbleback → 3130</small>

The 3130 is a 32mm Oyster Perpetual Bubbleback in solid 18k pink gold, caliber 9¾ with 17 jewels, documented across two Antiquorum lots that make the same mechanical watch tell two very different stories. One is a standard example: excellent condition, pink gold, original dial and hands, sold to an Italian collector's estate for CHF 9,375. The other is mechanically identical — same metal, same caliber, same 32mm case — but its dial carries the retailer signature of Serpico y Laino, the Caracas dealership whose name on a vintage Rolex dial routinely doubles or triples the price a plain example commands. That watch sold for CHF 18,750, exactly double.

Auction records describe more than one kind of ref. 3130. They include a stainless-steel, hand-wound watch with a black dial, gold examples with automatic movements and both subsidiary and centre seconds, and retailer-associated watches and mixed-numeral dials. These are catalogue descriptions of individual watches; they do not establish a complete specification or factory production range.

“Bubbleback” is a collector name for early Oyster Perpetual watches with a domed back for the self-winding mechanism. The Vintage Rolex Field Manual lists 3130/7 and 3130/8 in yellow and rose gold. Both rows say “Chronometer” and “Perpetual, Seconds sub-dial”; neither gives a start year or caliber. The same book names refs. 3131 and 3132 as the references that introduced a two-piece Oyster case in 1936. It does not include 3130 in that statement.

"Bubbleback" is a collector nickname, never an official Rolex designation, for the family of Oyster Perpetual references built from 1933 through the mid-1950s around the domed caseback needed to clear the early automatic winding rotor. The 3130 belongs to the two-piece-case generation Rolex introduced in 1936 alongside references 3131 and 3132, sharing their 32mm diameter and general construction.
Auction catalogues show why the reference should not be reduced to one configuration. A 2013 Sotheby's listing describes a stainless-steel, manually wound Cal. 50 watch with subsidiary seconds. Christie's described a 14K gold 3130 with automatic Cal. 635 and centre seconds in 2007. Other gold examples have automatic movements and subsidiary seconds. The surviving records do not explain when or why these differences arose.

The two documented 3130s make the retailer-signature market visible on a single reference. Serpico y Laino operated out of Caracas and became one of the best-documented Rolex retail signatures of the mid-20th century, printing its name on dials across the brand's catalogue — Bubblebacks, early Submariners, GMT-Masters, Explorers, and more. Luciano's survey for Rolex Passion Report documents the signature on references spanning a Ref. 6542 GMT-Master, a Ref. 6350 Explorer worn in the same window Hillary and Norgay were climbing Everest, and multiple Submariner references, alongside period Bubblebacks. A dial signed by a recognized period retailer carries real collector premium precisely because it anchors the watch to a documented point of original sale, in a category where most examples carry no such anchor at all.
Production and dating
<span id="production-outline"></span>
No factory source reviewed for this audit gives a production start, end or total for the reference. Auction houses date individual examples differently: Sotheby's catalogued its steel Cal. 50 watch as circa 1937; Antiquorum dated gold examples to 1942 and 1946; and Christie's described a Cal. 635 centre-seconds watch as circa 1948. Another Christie's catalogue labels a ref. 3130 circa 1955. These are house estimates for individual watches, and the disagreement does not set the reference's production span.
Production outline
Both documented examples are dated to the 1940s; the more precisely dated one, case number 411508, is given as circa 1946. No source located here establishes a start year, an end year, or a total production count specific to the 3130 — consistent with the wider Bubbleback range, which Anthony Traina describes for Hodinkee as "nearly impossible to catalog comprehensively" even in specialist references.
Phillips called its circa-1945 example one of the last generation of the model and noted a pantograph-engraved serial. Christie's later date estimate conflicts with that description. Neither catalogue establishes a factory close-out date. Case serials can be compared with the serial-number guide, but a chart alone cannot establish when an individual watch was assembled or sold.

<span id="movement-notes"></span>
Movement notes
Movement notes
Both documented examples run the same specification: a self-winding movement sized 9¾ lignes with 17 jewels, consistent across both lots despite the fourteen-year gap between their respective auction dates. "9¾ ligne" identifies the movement's diameter class rather than a single specific caliber number — a sizing convention Rolex used across several Bubbleback-era automatic movements.
The reference does not have one movement assignment in the auction record. Sotheby's described a 31mm steel example as a hand-wound Cal. 50 with 17 jewels and subsidiary seconds. Christie's catalogued a 14K gold watch as automatic Cal. 635, 19 jewels, with centre seconds. Antiquorum’s 2006 lot 256 names Cal. 635 in an automatic 3130 with subsidiary seconds. Other catalogues give only movement size or type, not a caliber number.

<span id="dial-map"></span>
The 9¾-ligne automatic descriptions therefore should not be converted into a Cal. 620 attribution without a stamped movement or stronger reference-specific documentation. The movement guide treats the documented 3130 Cal. 50 and Cal. 635 examples as individual catalogue records; neither establishes every 3130's movement. Catalogues also report different jewel counts, so check the movement itself before using a count to identify a watch.
Dial map
The luminous-dial, Serpico y Laino-signed example is the more visually distinct of the two — Antiquorum's own lot description flags it as "fine, rare and very attractive" ahead of the standard example, and the grading (AAA, "excellent") on both examples rules out condition as the explanation for the price gap between them. The second documented example carries a standard signed dial with no retailer mark, graded "very good" on the case and "good" on the dial with slight oxidation — a small condition edge in the Serpico y Laino example's favor, but not one that accounts for a full doubling in price on its own.
Dial map
<span id="case-bezel-crystal-and-crown-notes"></span>
Silvered and champagne dials with Arabic or baton markers appear in the auction sample. Other documented examples broaden that picture:
Case, bezel, crystal, and crown
Solid 18k pink gold across both documented examples, 32mm diameter, approximately 42g on the example where weight is recorded — a genuinely substantial watch for its era, reflecting the density of a solid gold case rather than the gold-capped or bi-metal construction documented on other Bubbleback references such as the 3133 and 3696.
* Christie's catalogued two black California-style dials, in 2014 and 2023. The 2014 lot combines Roman numerals, Arabic numerals, batons and dagger markers; the 2023 lot also has a black California dial.
* A Sotheby's 2013 steel example has a matte black dial with painted gold Arabic numerals and baton indexes.
* Bonhams described a circa-1946 pink-gold example with a black dial, dagger markers, luminous dots, 3/6/9 numerals and centre seconds.
* Antiquorum’s 2026 example has a dial signed “Serpico y Laino.” Sotheby’s also catalogued 3130s retailed by Cartier and Cuervo y Sobrinos; those retailer attributions do not show that their dials carry those names.

<span id="authentication"></span>
Retailer signatures require individual scrutiny. Rolex Passion Report documents Serpico y Laino signatures on other Rolex references and warns that the name has also been added to unsigned dials. That source is a collector lead, not authentication of a particular 3130. The California-dial lots are likewise individual examples, not proof of a standard or production-wide variant.
Authentication
A retailer signature is only worth the premium it commands if it is genuine. Serpico y Laino's own historical documentation carries an explicit warning from collectors who have surveyed the marketplace: fake Serpico y Laino prints have been added to otherwise genuine vintage Rolex dials specifically to chase the premium a real signature commands, and the difference between a correct and incorrect print is a documented point of comparison among specialists rather than something obvious at a glance. A Serpico y Laino-signed 3130 — or any Serpico y Laino-signed vintage Rolex — is worth checking against known-correct print references before the signature is treated as adding value.

* Bubbleback 3131 — same two-piece case generation, introduced 1936
The cited catalogues describe cases from 31mm to 33mm. Several gold examples are called tonneau-shaped; an Antiquorum 2008 lot describes a three-body case, and a separate 2013 Sotheby's lot calls its steel watch an “Oyster Commander.” Those descriptions do not establish one case construction or size for every 3130. The 1936 two-piece-case statement in the Field Manual applies to refs. 3131 and 3132, not to 3130.

Leather straps appear on several catalogued watches. Christie's described a 2014 California-dial example on an 18K gold expandable bracelet. Bonhams called the riveted Oyster bracelet on its 2019 pink-gold watch “associated”; that wording does not show it left Rolex with the watch.

Both examples graded "excellent" (AAA) on the case; the doubling in price between them tracks the Serpico y Laino signature far more closely than it tracks any condition difference between the two watches.

Bubbleback → 3130

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Bubbleback 3130 in 14K pink gold with silvered dial on a leather strap
14K pink-gold ref. 3130, Christie's Watches Online, May 2018.

Core facts

detail value
reference 3130; the Field Manual also lists 3130/7 and 3130/8
family Oyster Perpetual; grouped with Bubblebacks in collector references
production no confirmed factory range; auction catalogues date individual examples from circa 1937 to circa 1955, with conflicting estimates
case examples stainless steel, 14K gold and 18K gold; 31–33mm in the cited catalogues
movement examples Sotheby's catalogued a manual-wind Cal. 50; Christie's catalogued automatic Cal. 635 examples; other lots describe automatic movements without a caliber number
catalogue jewel counts 17, 18 and 19 are reported for different examples
seconds layouts subsidiary seconds and centre seconds are both documented
dial examples silvered, champagne, pink and black; black California-style dials and one co-signed Serpico y Laino dial are also documented

Where it sits in the line

“Bubbleback” is a collector name for early Oyster Perpetual watches with a domed back for the self-winding mechanism. The Vintage Rolex Field Manual lists 3130/7 and 3130/8 in yellow and rose gold. Both rows say “Chronometer” and “Perpetual, Seconds sub-dial”; neither gives a start year or caliber. The same book names refs. 3131 and 3132 as the references that introduced a two-piece Oyster case in 1936. It does not include 3130 in that statement.

Production and dating

No factory source reviewed for this audit gives a production start, end or total for the reference. Auction houses date individual examples differently: Sotheby's catalogued its steel Cal. 50 watch as circa 1937; Antiquorum dated gold examples to 1942 and 1946; and Christie's described a Cal. 635 centre-seconds watch as circa 1948. Another Christie's catalogue labels a ref. 3130 circa 1955. These are house estimates for individual watches, and the disagreement does not set the reference's production span.

Movement notes

The reference does not have one movement assignment in the auction record. Sotheby's described a 31mm steel example as a hand-wound Cal. 50 with 17 jewels and subsidiary seconds. Christie's catalogued a 14K gold watch as automatic Cal. 635, 19 jewels, with centre seconds. Antiquorum’s 2006 lot 256 names Cal. 635 in an automatic 3130 with subsidiary seconds. Other catalogues give only movement size or type, not a caliber number.

Dial map

Silvered and champagne dials with Arabic or baton markers appear in the auction sample. Other documented examples broaden that picture:

 • Christie's catalogued two black California-style dials, in 2014 and 2023. The 2014 lot combines Roman numerals, Arabic numerals, batons and dagger markers; the 2023 lot also has a black California dial.
 • A Sotheby's 2013 steel example has a matte black dial with painted gold Arabic numerals and baton indexes.
 • Bonhams described a circa-1946 pink-gold example with a black dial, dagger markers, luminous dots, 3/6/9 numerals and centre seconds.
 • Antiquorum’s 2026 example has a dial signed “Serpico y Laino.” Sotheby’s also catalogued 3130s retailed by Cartier and Cuervo y Sobrinos; those retailer attributions do not show that their dials carry those names.

Case, bezel, crystal, and crown

The cited catalogues describe cases from 31mm to 33mm. Several gold examples are called tonneau-shaped; an Antiquorum 2008 lot describes a three-body case, and a separate 2013 Sotheby's lot calls its steel watch an “Oyster Commander.” Those descriptions do not establish one case construction or size for every 3130. The 1936 two-piece-case statement in the Field Manual applies to refs. 3131 and 3132, not to 3130.

Bracelet and strap

Leather straps appear on several catalogued watches. Christie's described a 2014 California-dial example on an 18K gold expandable bracelet. Bonhams called the riveted Oyster bracelet on its 2019 pink-gold watch “associated”; that wording does not show it left Rolex with the watch.

The table lists selected catalogue records that document differences between examples. It is not a complete census. Catalogue dates, movement descriptions and condition statements are attributed to the sale house.
