<small>Day-Date → 6612B</small>

The 6612B is the late, thicker-plate version of the smooth-bezel originals-era Day-Date, and the reference behind the most storied of all the early Presidents: the platinum, fully Eastern-Arabic "Lone Star." Where the gold 6612 is the smooth-bezel brother of the fluted 6611, the 6612B carries the second-generation caliber 1055B, and in its rarest form a platinum case and bracelet, diamond hour markers and a dial with the day and date both spelled out in Arabic. That watch, named the "Lone Star" in Pucci Papaleo's Day-Date — The Presidential Rolex (Pucci Papaleo Editore, 2015), is among the first entirely Arabic-script Day-Dates Rolex made, and it sits at the very top of the originals-era market with the platinum 6612 and 6613.

Auction catalogues use “6612B” or “6612/B” for smooth-bezel Day-Dates related to the 6612. The records reviewed here date examples from 1957 to about 1959 and variously list caliber 1055 or B1055. They do not establish whether B was an official Rolex reference suffix, a movement designation, or a later cataloguing convention. The “Lone Star” is a separate, book-documented platinum example with diamond hour markers and an Eastern-Arabic day and date.

Where it sits in the line
The 6612B is the "B" sub-variant of the smooth-bezel 6612, carrying the thicker-plate caliber 1055B that the 6611 takes as the 6611B. The change is a late-run movement plate, not a new model. The shared smooth-bezel story, the case, the bracelet and the dial range, sits on the 6612 entry. The platinum Arabic "Lone Star" is why the 6612B is remembered separately.
The designation appears beside the 6612 in catalogues of smooth-bezel Day-Dates. A 1959 Phillips lot describes a platinum watch as 6612B, while noting “6612” on the caseback and a later “6613” stamp. Phillips interpreted that stamp as evidence of a later change; the auction record does not establish the factory history. Other catalogued 6612B examples include yellow-, pink- and white-gold cases as well as platinum. See the 6612 and 6611 pages for the adjacent smooth- and fluted-bezel references.

The platinum originals-era Day-Dates are the apex of the early line. They were made in platinum for Gulf clients because Islamic custom discourages gold on men, and they carry diamond markers, with Eastern-Arabic calendars on the rarest. Three watches define the group: the platinum 6612 "Big Kahuna" with a grey dial, the platinum Arabic 6613, and this smooth-bezel platinum Arabic 6612B, the Lone Star. It is also the ancestor of the 4-digit platinum Arabic Presidents that follow, the 1804 "Scheherazade" and the platinum 1831 "Emperor."

Production outline
Production outline
The 6612B belongs to the 1957–1959 originals run, the smooth-bezel reference in its late, caliber-1055B form. Like the 6611B, the "B" marks the second-generation movement plate rather than a metal or dial change, and gold examples are the bulk of what survives. The platinum examples are a tiny special-order population built for Middle-Eastern clients; the fully-Arabic Lone Star appears to be a single watch, documented in Papaleo's book rather than in any production record. No Rolex figure has surfaced. The whole 66xx cluster gives way to the 4-digit 1803 around 1959.
The available auction records date individual examples rather than defining a production run. Monaco Legend dates a yellow-gold example, case 384,933, to 1957. Other lots date gold and platinum cases to circa 1958, and Phillips dates a platinum example to circa 1959. These estimates do not establish the first or last year of production. No production total or factory explanation for the B suffix appears in the sources reviewed here.

Movement notes
Movement notes
The 6612B runs the caliber 1055B, the second-generation version of the first Day-Date movement: an automatic, chronometer-certified caliber with the free-sprung Microstella balance and the instant midnight changeover that the early 1055 lacked. It is the same movement the 6611B carries. What sets the 6612B apart is the smooth bezel and, on the Lone Star, the platinum case. The Reference:Movements page holds the caliber lineage, and the 6612 entry covers the smooth-bezel reference's mechanics in full.
Catalogue descriptions do not use one movement label consistently. Christie's and Antiquorum list caliber 1055 for the pink-gold case 395,916; Monaco Legend lists 1055 for its yellow-gold, white-gold and platinum examples. Phillips lists B1055 for platinum case 446,052, and Christie’s Dubai uses the same label for what appears to be that watch. Keep the label attached to the specific lot; this evidence does not support stating that every 6612B contains a 1055B. The broader movement index records the related 1055 family and its catalogue variants.

The standard 6612B dials are the smooth-bezel "Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified" dials of the period, covered on the 6612 entry. The dial that defines this reference is the Lone Star's: a gilt-champagne ground with round-brilliant diamond hour markers in prong settings, and the day and date both rendered in Eastern-Arabic script, the day spelled out in the window at twelve and the date in Arabic numerals at three. SJX Watches' history of the Arabic Day-Date calls it likely the first such dial made by the Swiss industry. The deep dial taxonomy that spans the President line sits on the 1803 entry.
The auction records show several configurations, not one standard dial. The yellow-gold 1957 example has a silver dial; the pink-gold case 395,916 has a black lacquer dial; and the white-gold case 394,866 is catalogued with a silver dial, diamond markers and an Italian day display. Monaco Legend describes platinum case 403,679 with a yellowed dial, diamond markers and Eastern-Arabic day and date. The platinum case 446,052 is described with a black lacquer dial and diamond markers.

SJX’s 2016 account identifies the “Lone Star” from Pucci Papaleo’s 2015 book as a platinum watch with a platinum bracelet, diamond hour markers, and both day and date in Eastern-Arabic script. Its markers are diamonds, not Arabic hour numerals. SJX reports collector lore that it may be among the first Swiss watches with a fully Arabic calendar, while acknowledging that the history is uncertain. That claim is not established as a Rolex production fact.

Case, bezel, crystal, and crown
Case, bezel, crystal, and crown
The case is the 36mm smooth-bezel Oyster shared with the 6612, with an acrylic crystal and a Twinlock screw-down crown. On the Lone Star the case and bracelet are platinum rather than gold, the choice that marks the Gulf special orders, and the smooth bezel reads cleaner in white metal than the fluted 6611 does. Within the cluster that plain bezel is what separates the 6612 and 6612B from the fluted 6611 and the diamond-set 6613.
The cited auction catalogues give 36mm for their 6612B examples. They record smooth-bezel examples in gold and platinum, but a catalogue designation does not prove that every component is original to the watch. Phillips describes case 446,052 with a later 6613 stamp and interprets it as a changed bezel; Christie's Dubai lists the case as 446,062 and says the earlier catalogues also had the number wrong. Phillips and Sotheby’s both give 446,052, so the Dubai listing leaves the case number unresolved. The sources cited here do not establish a reference-wide crystal or crown specification.

Bracelets, end links, and clasps
Bracelets, end links, and clasps
Gold 6612Bs wear the President bracelet, as the 6612 does. The Lone Star wears a platinum brick-link bracelet in place of the President, the woven flat-link style seen on the platinum originals-era Day-Dates. As with any watch of the era, a clasp date code dates the bracelet, which may be older or newer than the head, and the cross-family detail sits on Reference:Bracelets.
Catalogues describe different configurations: a gold Rolex/Oyster riveted bracelet on the 1957 yellow-gold example; a President bracelet on the platinum case 446,052; a tessellated platinum bracelet on case 403,679; and leather straps on the white-gold case 394,866 and pink-gold case 395,916 when later sold by Antiquorum. The case 395,916 had appeared on a bracelet in its 2018 Christie’s catalogue. These records document sale-time configurations, not original delivery. A clasp code dates the bracelet, not the watch head.

The "Lone Star"
The Lone Star is a platinum, smooth-bezel 6612B with diamond hour markers and a fully Eastern-Arabic calendar. Papaleo's book documents it and nothing else does; it has never surfaced at public sale, which leaves its market position untested. If it ever came up it would price as a unique trophy above the platinum lots below.

The platinum-originals apex
The “Lone Star”
Platinum sits an order of magnitude above gold across this cluster. Phillips sold a platinum 6612 with a grey diamond-set dial, the "Big Kahuna," for CHF 473,000 in 2015, then a Day-Date world-record price. A platinum diamond-bezel 6613 with an Eastern-Arabic calendar made CHF 425,450 at Phillips in 2025, and an earlier platinum diamond-bezel 6613, its dial aged to brown, HK$275,000 in 2016. The Lone Star is the smooth-bezel, fully-Arabic member of that platinum apex, and the only one of the group never offered publicly.
The name is associated with a platinum Day-Date illustrated in Pucci Papaleo’s Day-Date — The Presidential Rolex (2015); SJX’s 2016 article discusses the image and its Eastern-Arabic calendar. The published image shows diamond hour markers and Arabic day and date indications. The consulted public sources do not provide a verifiable case number, movement number, production record or auction result for this watch. Its exact relationship to other catalogued 6612B examples remains undocumented.

Auction record
Auction record
The Lone Star has never appeared at public auction. What has sold from the platinum originals era is its diamond-bezel 6613 sibling and the platinum non-Arabic 6612. Gold 6612B examples trade in the dealer market rather than the catalogued sales, in the same low-five-figure band as the gold 6611 and 6612.
The table separates distinct case numbers from repeat listings. Case 395,916 appears in both Christie’s and Antiquorum records and should be counted as one watch, not two. The platinum case listed as 446,052 by Phillips and Sotheby’s appears in Christie’s Dubai as 446,062; because the Dubai entry cites the earlier sales, it is not an independent example. Results below are the amounts reported by the auction houses.
