The 6612 is the smooth-bezel member of the Day-Date's second generation. It arrived in 1957 alongside the fluted 6611 and the diamond-bezel 6613, about a year after the 6510 and 6511 originals, and it carries the same three upgrades that turned the Day-Date into the President: the President bracelet, the "Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified" dial line, and the rebuilt caliber 1055 with a free-sprung Microstella balance. Where the 6611 wears the fluted "Millerighe" bezel, the 6612 wears a plain polished one.
The 6612 is the smooth-bezel version of the early four-digit Day-Date series, alongside the fluted 6611 and diamond-set 6613. Auction catalogues place examples in the late 1950s and describe both gold and platinum cases. The surviving records do not establish a factory production span or a complete specification for every 6612.

The shared origin story — the day-disc patents, the Presidential nickname, the full cluster roster — belongs to the 6510 entry, and the bracelet-and-caliber bundle that defines the cluster is set out on the 6611.

Where it sits in the line
The 6612 belongs to the 66xx cluster that succeeds the 1956 originals around 1957. Within the cluster the bezel is the divider: the 6611 takes the fluted bezel, the 6612 the smooth, and the 6613 a factory diamond-set bezel. The smooth bezel links the 6612 back to the first-generation 6510, the only other early Day-Date to wear one; everything inside the watch is second-generation. By about 1959 the 1803 and its siblings replace the whole cluster and the Day-Date settles into its long 4-digit era.
Phillips describes the early 66xx group as 6611 with a fluted bezel, 6612 with a smooth bezel, and 6613 with a diamond-set bezel. That distinction is useful for reading the catalogued examples, though later bezel changes and case markings can complicate an individual watch's history. The 6612 follows the smooth-bezel 6510 in appearance; the movement and dial descriptions in 6612 auction records differ from those of the first-generation 6510.

Dating the cluster is not quite unanimous. Sotheby's groups the 66xx references with the 1956 launch, while Monochrome places them at 1957. The 1957 reading is the common one and matches the President bracelet's own introduction.
Rolex dates the Day-Date's debut to 1956 but does not give dates for individual references. Collector histories commonly place the 6611–6613 group around 1957–1959. Dated 6612-family auction examples cited here run from 1958 to circa 1959; that is a record of catalogued watches, not a production ledger. The four-digit 1800 series appears in the following period.

Production outline
Production outline
The 6612 arrived in 1957 with the rest of the cluster, keeping the 36mm Oyster case and the gold-and-platinum catalogue of the period, and ran for about three years.
The dated examples show that the smooth-bezel reference appeared in yellow and white gold as well as platinum. Bonhams catalogued a yellow-gold 6612/8 with serial 446*** as circa 1959. Monaco Legend dated a white-gold 6612B, case 394,866, to 1958 and a platinum 6612B, case 403,679, to 1958. Phillips dated the consecutive platinum case 403,680 to 1958. These are auction-house dates and descriptions; they do not set the first or last year of production.

No Rolex archival production figure has surfaced, and the smooth-bezel 6612 is scarcer in the record than the fluted 6611 — most early Day-Dates that reach the market wear the fluted bezel that became the line's signature. Case numbers fall in the same late-1950s band as the rest of the cluster; the platinum pair below carries numbers around 403,680, consistent with 1958.
The reference is less visible in published auction records than the fluted 6611, but the number of catalogue entries is not a measure of total production. No verified factory production count or complete serial range is available here.

Movement notes
Movement notes
The 6612 carries the second-generation caliber 1055, the version registries label 1055B, the same movement as the fluted 6611. It keeps the first-generation running gear (automatic, 25 jewels, 18,000 vph, 28.50mm across) and adds the two upgrades that define the cluster: a free-sprung balance with Rolex's Microstella regulating screws paired with a Breguet overcoil, and COSC chronometer certification. The midnight changeover becomes instant, fixing the slow day-and-date roll-over that hobbled the first-generation 1055 and is usually blamed for the one-year run of the 6510 and 6511. The full caliber lineage sits on Reference:Movements.
Auction catalogues do not use one movement label consistently. Phillips lists caliber 1055 in its 1958 platinum 6612. Bonhams lists 1055 in a circa-1959 gold 6612/8. Monaco Legend also lists 1055 for its 6612B examples, while some other catalogues use B1055 or 1055B. Christie’s Dubai lot 65 lists B1055 on a platinum watch whose caseback is stamped 6612 and 6613; the catalogue says earlier Phillips and Sotheby’s entries gave the wrong case number. The standard caliber registry groups the later chronometer-grade movement under 1055B, but the lot descriptions do not show whether each watch retains its original movement. See Reference:Movements for the broader 1055 record.

For an individual watch, record the caliber as engraved or as documented by the source, and keep the suffix in that source's wording. The available catalogues do not support claims that every 6612 has a 1055B, that the date changes at exactly midnight, or that a particular movement label alone proves a production date.

Dial map
Dial map
The 6612 carries the four-line "Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified" text at six o'clock that the cluster introduced, with the spelled-out day at twelve, the date at three, applied faceted gold indices, and the period's shift toward alpha hands. The printing is gilt, gold text on a glossy lacquered ground, the finish Rolex used before matte printing arrived in the 1960s. Its condition drives value on any surviving example. Day discs follow the retail market — English, French, German, Italian and Spanish discs are all documented across the cluster.
The auction examples show several dial configurations rather than one fixed layout. Phillips's 1958 platinum 6612 has a grey dial with eight round-cut and two baguette-cut diamond markers. Monaco Legend's platinum 6612B, case 403,679, has a yellowed dial and Eastern Arabic day and date discs; the catalogue describes diamond indexes with stones omitted at six and nine. Christie's catalogued a circa-1958 platinum 6612/B, case 382,921, with a matte black dial and baguette diamond indexes. These records establish the described examples, not factory-wide dial rules.

Dials on the 6612 split two ways. The standard configuration is a champagne or silvered dial with applied gold batons. The platinum examples instead carry a grey dial set with round- and baguette-cut diamond markers, the configuration Phillips documented in 2015. Diamond hour markers otherwise belong to the precious-metal and diamond-bezel configurations; a standard gold 6612 does not carry them.
Bonhams's circa-1959 yellow-gold 6612/8 is catalogued with a champagne dial and applied faceted batons. Day-disc language and dial furniture should be recorded from the individual watch; a single auction description does not establish which options were available throughout the run.

Case, bezel, crystal, and crown
Case, bezel, crystal, and crown
The 6612 uses the 36mm three-piece Oyster case shared across the cluster: screw-down Twinlock crown, screw-down caseback, acrylic crystal. The bezel is the plain polished one, the single feature that separates the 6612 from the fluted 6611.
The catalogues report case diameters from 35 to 36mm: Bonhams gives 35mm for its yellow-gold 6612/8, while Phillips, Monaco Legend and Christie’s give 36mm for other examples. They describe smooth bezels. Phillips identifies a plastic crystal on case 403,680, and Bonhams describes a screw-down Oyster crown and caseback on the 6612/8. These records do not establish a single measurement or complete case specification for every watch.

The metals are yellow, pink and white gold, with yellow the common case material. Platinum is the outlier: a pair of 1958 platinum examples with consecutive case numbers is documented, one of which Phillips catalogued as one of only two known. Platinum with a diamond-set dial places these among the scarcest early Day-Dates.
Materials in the records include yellow gold, white gold and platinum. The platinum examples have different case numbers: Phillips's case 403,680 and Monaco Legend's case 403,679 form a consecutive pair; Christie's separately catalogued platinum case 382,921. Phillips called the 403,680 watch one of two platinum examples known in 2015. That historical count should not be repeated as a current census in light of later catalogued examples.

Bracelets, end links, and clasps
Bracelets, end links, and clasps
The 6612 wears the President, the three-piece semi-circular-link bracelet designed for the Day-Date and introduced with this cluster in 1957. The bracelet's name predates the Johnson-era association: a 1957 Italian advertisement reproduced by Rolex Magazine already calls it the President. The cross-family detail sits on Reference:Bracelets. As ever, a clasp date code dates only the bracelet, and service swaps over seventy years are common.
Phillips's case 403,680 was catalogued on a President bracelet with a clasp stamped 3.59. Monaco Legend describes the 403,679 platinum watch on an unusual tessellated platinum bracelet, not a President bracelet. Bonhams's 6612/8 was catalogued on a gold President bracelet with a clasp dated March 1959. A clasp date belongs to the bracelet, not the watch head; none of these descriptions alone proves original delivery.

Platinum
Platinum and gem-set examples
Phillips sold a 1958 example, case 403,680, with a grey dial set with eight round-cut and two baguette-cut diamond markers at the Glamorous Day-Date sale in Geneva in May 2015, cataloguing it as one of only two platinum 6612s known and noting that the two carry consecutive case numbers. Collectors know that watch as the "Big Kahuna."
Several auction records document platinum 6612-family watches, with different case numbers and dials. Phillips's 2015 lot 43 is case 403,680, dated 1958, with a grey diamond-set dial. Monaco Legend's 2024 lot 67 is case 403,679, also dated 1958, with Eastern Arabic calendar discs and a tessellated bracelet. Christie's catalogued case 382,921 as a circa-1958 6612/B with a black baguette-diamond dial. The catalogues use 6612, 6612B and 6612/B; they do not establish whether those forms represent distinct factory references.

The 6612B
Case stamped 6612 and 6613
Cataloguers use "6612B" inconsistently. Editorial coverage uses it for ordinary gold examples — plain yellow- or pink-gold cases with black lacquered dials, no different in appearance from a standard 6612 — and ties the "B" to a movement-registry distinction that parallels the fluted 6611B's documented late-production caliber 1055B bridge-plate update. Monaco Legend Auctions used the same designation for a platinum example, case 403'679, as reference "6612B" — a tropicalized yellow dial with Eastern Arabic day and date discs, diamond indexes omitted at six and nine o'clock, and a unique tessellated platinum bracelet in place of the standard President, illustrated in John Goldberger's 100 Superlative Rolex Watches (pp. 174-175). That watch carries the case number consecutive to Phillips's own platinum 6612 ("Big Kahuna," case 403,680) — the same pair Phillips calls one of only two examples known in platinum. Yet Phillips's own catalogue text for its watch states that the caseback stamp "6612" itself indicates Day-Dates fitted with smooth bezels, with no "B" mentioned. A third platinum example, with a diamond-set bezel and a black baguette-diamond dial, has been catalogued elsewhere with a caseback reportedly stamped both "6612" and "6613," suggesting a later upgrade rather than a distinct factory sub-reference. These descriptions do not establish a consistent factory meaning for the "B" suffix.
Christie’s Dubai catalogue describes a platinum watch as 6612B, with “6612” and “6613” stamped inside the caseback. It notes that Phillips and Sotheby’s had previously catalogued the watch with an incorrect case number. Phillips’s Geneva Watch Auction XIII also describes a separate case with both 6612 and 6613 markings and interprets the 6613 stamp as a later bezel change. These are catalogue interpretations of specific watches; they do not establish a factory 6612/6613 sub-reference.

The 6612B designation
Auction houses apply 6612B to gold and platinum watches, and Christie's also writes 6612/B. Their descriptions document individual watches but do not explain the suffix from a factory source. Some movement references associate a B suffix with a later plate revision, but the auction descriptions cited here identify several 6612B watches simply as caliber 1055. Treat the suffix as a catalogue designation unless the particular watch's movement and case documentation establish more.

The platinum "Big Kahuna" carries the reference's one landmark result, CHF 473,000 at Phillips in May 2015, a world record for any Day-Date at the time. Plain gold 6612s trade in the same modest band as the gold 6611, with the smooth bezel making them marginally harder to find; the platinum pair is the clear exception on rarity. Few auction results are documented for the 6612 beyond that lot.
Auction descriptions preserve the house's own reference spelling, dating and movement attribution. Estimates and results are lot-specific and do not define a market range for the reference.

Day-Date → 6612

Platinum Day-Date 6612 with smooth bezel and diamond-set grey dial
Platinum Day-Date 6612, case 403,680, as catalogued by Phillips in 2015.

Where it sits in the line

Phillips describes the early 66xx group as 6611 with a fluted bezel, 6612 with a smooth bezel, and 6613 with a diamond-set bezel. That distinction is useful for reading the catalogued examples, though later bezel changes and case markings can complicate an individual watch's history. The 6612 follows the smooth-bezel 6510 in appearance; the movement and dial descriptions in 6612 auction records differ from those of the first-generation 6510.

The dated examples show that the smooth-bezel reference appeared in yellow and white gold as well as platinum. Bonhams catalogued a yellow-gold 6612/8 with serial 446*** as circa 1959. Monaco Legend dated a white-gold 6612B, case 394,866, to 1958 and a platinum 6612B, case 403,679, to 1958. Phillips dated the consecutive platinum case 403,680 to 1958. These are auction-house dates and descriptions; they do not set the first or last year of production.

The reference is less visible in published auction records than the fluted 6611, but the number of catalogue entries is not a measure of total production. No verified factory production count or complete serial range is available here.

Movement notes

Dial map

The catalogues report case diameters from 35 to 36mm: Bonhams gives 35mm for its yellow-gold 6612/8, while Phillips, Monaco Legend and Christie’s give 36mm for other examples. They describe smooth bezels. Phillips identifies a plastic crystal on case 403,680, and Bonhams describes a screw-down Oyster crown and caseback on the 6612/8. These records do not establish a single measurement or complete case specification for every watch.

Phillips's case 403,680 was catalogued on a President bracelet with a clasp stamped 3.59. Monaco Legend describes the 403,679 platinum watch on an unusual tessellated platinum bracelet, not a President bracelet. Bonhams's 6612/8 was catalogued on a gold President bracelet with a clasp dated March 1959. A clasp date belongs to the bracelet, not the watch head; none of these descriptions alone proves original delivery.

Special branches

Platinum and gem-set examples

Case stamped 6612 and 6613
