Caliber 3135 is the date movement associated with the 16610. It is an automatic Swiss chronometer beating at 28,800 vph, with a quick-set date, Microstella regulation, and a power reserve commonly given as about 48 hours. The 3135 replaced the 3035 used in the preceding 16800 generation and has 31 jewels in the published auction descriptions and technical references reviewed for this page. Submariner › 16610
The 16610 is the five-digit Submariner Date reference produced from the late 1980s until 2010. It followed the 16800 and 168000 and preceded the ceramic-bezel 116610LN. The case stayed at 40mm and the watch kept caliber 3135, while lume, bracelet end links, lug holes, crystal marking, and the inner rehaut changed during the run.
The reference is a production family rather than one fixed specification. A tritium, drilled-lug example on a 93150 bracelet is materially different from a late Super-LumiNova watch with solid end links, no lug holes, laser-etched crystal, and engraved rehaut. Serial ranges help date those changes, but Rolex did not publish a complete transition chart.

Where it sits in the line
The 16610 follows the 16800 and transitional 168000 and precedes the ceramic 116610LN. It shares the five-digit Submariner case architecture with the no-date 14060 and 14060M, but adds the date display and caliber 3135. Rolex introduced the 16610LV in 2003 with a green aluminum bezel and Maxi dial; that is a separate reference built on the same platform.
Production outline
The production changes below are useful dating clues, not a Rolex-published generation table. Serial bands overlap and service replacement parts can make an individual watch diverge from the usual pattern.
Early production: tritium, drilled lugs, and stamped end links
Late-1980s and 1990s examples generally use dials marked T SWISS T or T<25, a case with drilled lugs, and an Oyster 93150 bracelet with stamped 501B end links and a Fliplock clasp. The case has a plain inner rehaut. Tritium dials can age differently from one another; colour alone does not establish originality.
Lume transition: SWISS and SWISS MADE dials
Rolex changed from tritium to non-radioactive Luminova around 1998, with short transitional examples marked SWISS and later dials marked SWISS MADE. Published collector charts place the boundaries differently, and mixed combinations occur near the changeover. A dial marking should be read with the serial, case, hands, and service history.
Solid end links and Super-Luminova
Solid end links and the 93250-style Oyster bracelet appeared around the turn of the 2000s. The change overlaps the period when Super-Luminova replaced Luminova. Drilled-lug cases can therefore be found with solid end links; the parts did not all change on one date.
No-holes cases and laser-etched coronet
Rolex removed the drilled lug holes around 2003. Later sapphire crystals carry a small laser-etched coronet at six o'clock, visible with magnification. The 16610LV launched in this later case configuration, but the standard 16610 transition is not tied to one universally accepted serial cutoff.
Engraved rehaut and late production
ROLEX engraving around the inner rehaut and a serial marking at six o'clock appear on later examples, generally in the mid-to-late 2000s. Late watches combine the engraved rehaut, laser-etched crystal, Super-Luminova dial, and solid-end-link bracelet. The exact introduction date varies across reference guides and observed watches.
Movement notes
Caliber 3135 is the date movement associated with the 16610. It is an automatic Swiss chronometer beating at 28,800 vph, with a quick-set date, Microstella regulation, and a power reserve commonly given as about 48 hours. Rolex used the caliber through the reference's production; later movements can differ in hairspring, service parts, and finishing.
The 3135 replaced the 3035 used in the preceding 16800 generation and has 31 jewels in the published auction descriptions and technical references reviewed for this page. Late-production examples may carry the blue Parachrom hairspring, but a complete 16610 transition date is not published. A movement should be checked against the individual watch and its service history.

Bracelets, end links, clasps, and packaging notes
Early examples are commonly found on Oyster 93150 bracelets with stamped 501B end links and a Fliplock clasp with diving extension. Later examples use solid end links and the 93250 Oyster bracelet with an Oysterlock clasp. The changes overlap, and a bracelet can be replaced during service.
A clasp or end-link stamp dates that component, not the watch head. Check the bracelet, case, dial, hands, crystal, and movement as separate parts when assessing originality. Boxes, papers, and warranty cards follow period and delivery history; they do not identify a 16610 variant by themselves.

Special branches
Italian State Police
Sotheby's catalogued one 16610 made for the Italian State Police Nautical Division (Squadra Nautica), circa 2002, with a caseback inscription, a Rolex chronometer certificate dated 9 April 2003, patches, hang tags, and a cardholder. That lot documents the configuration; it does not establish the size of the issue. It is separate from the 16600 Sea-Dweller "Polipetto" made for the Polizia di Stato dive corps.
COMEX
Auction records place COMEX-marked 16610 deliveries mainly in the 1990s, with later examples also documented. Sotheby's catalogued a circa-1991 watch with COMEX issue number 6366, and Christie's catalogued a circa-2007 M-serial watch with issue number 6650, described as possibly one of the last Submariners delivered to COMEX. The dial and caseback engravings distinguish these watches from ordinary production; the case, bracelet, and caliber remain 16610 components.
COMEX examples were issued through the Rolex–COMEX relationship rather than sold as ordinary retail watches. The issue-number sequence is not a complete dating system. Authentication should use the dial print, caseback engraving, case serial, papers, tags, and delivery history together. A COMEX catalogue lot documents one watch and does not establish the total population.
GSPR, French presidential security
Antiquorum catalogued a 16610 made for the Groupe de sécurité de la présidence de la République (GSPR), no. 11/30, case M910617, sold in December 2008 with its fitted box, papers, patch, badge, key ring, flag, and GSPR pins. The catalogue describes a 30-piece issue with numbered casebacks. This lot is evidence for that commission; it is not a general specification for ordinary 16610s.

Panama Canal limited edition
Sotheby's catalogued a 16610 made for the 1999 transfer of the Panama Canal, case no. A732665, numbered 56/75. The catalogue describes 150 watches for Mercurio Joyero: 75 in steel and 75 in steel and yellow gold. The steel dial carries the Panama Canal emblem and bilingual inscription above six o'clock; the caseback is numbered around its edge. The two-tone issue is the 16613 Panama Canal.

16610LV variant
The 16610LV ("Kermit") is a separate reference introduced in 2003 for the Submariner's 50th anniversary. It uses the 16610 platform with a green aluminum bezel and a Maxi dial. LV is the French lunette verte, or green bezel. The related page covers insert variants such as the so-called Flat 4 and Sharp 4.

Authentication
Dial text is one dating clue. T SWISS T or T<25 usually indicates a tritium-era dial; SWISS and SWISS MADE mark later lume changes. The boundaries overlap, and Rolex service work can put a later dial on an earlier case.
A pre-change serial with a SWISS MADE dial may indicate a service replacement, but the dial text alone cannot prove when the dial was installed. Compare the serial, case holes, rehaut, crystal coronet, hands, bracelet, movement, and available service or delivery records. A clasp or end-link stamp dates that component, not the watch head.
Market context
The 16610 is widely encountered in the pre-ceramic Submariner market because it was produced for many years, but the surviving watches are not interchangeable. Tritium dials, transitional lume, drilled-lug cases, solid end links, institutional commissions, COMEX markings, condition, service parts, and papers all change what a particular example represents.
No published production total or 16610-to-16610LV ratio was found. Treat population and rarity claims as estimates unless they are tied to a named source or a specific documented issue.
