Rolex stamped the 1035's self-winding bridge "1030," as it also did on the 1036. This causes auction catalogues to identify the same reference under both numbers. The calendar work and 6.66mm height distinguish the 1035 from the 5.85mm no-date 1030. A correct ref. 6534 contains a 1035 regardless of its bridge engraving.

Cal. 1040 powers the Oyster Perpetual Tru-Beat [[Reference:6556|6556]]. Its centre seconds hand pauses at each marker and advances once per second. Christie’s calls it a modified Cal. 1030; watchmaker Aaron Berlow’s account of a single restoration identifies a longer second intermediate wheel for the dead-beat mechanism. His report supports the relationship between the two calibres, but does not establish that every 1030 part is interchangeable.
Christie’s, Phillips and Antiquorum catalogue 26 jewels on the examined examples. Phillips also catalogues one watch as ref. 6558 with an inner caseback stamped 6556 and Cal. 1040; that lot does not establish general 6558 fitment. The available records do not establish a changeover sequence, beat rate, power reserve, or full production interval for the 1040. Auction essays place the 6556 introduction in 1954 and often give 1959 as its end; later-dated 6556 lots make the cutoff uncertain. Those dates describe the watch reference and should not be treated as a verified movement production range.
Hodinkee’s 2016 review says the dead-beat function was often removed during service, though the photographed example still worked. Watchmaker Aaron Berlow wrote in 2015 that reports of Rolex replacing the 1040 module with 1030 parts were internet hearsay he had not seen first-hand. These accounts do not establish a service frequency or document a specific replaced movement.
Antiquorum and Dr. Crott report that a 1960 Rolex catalogue proposed ref. 1020 as a successor to the 6556 and that the model was never produced. Neither source reproduces the catalogue page in the reviewed listing; this remains an attributed historical note. No production caliber or fitment is established for 1020, so it is not indexed as a movement.
