The 16003 is a two-tone Datejust with a smooth yellow-gold bezel, steel case and Cal. 3035. Thomas Van Straaten's Fratello guide dates the five-digit Datejust generation to 1977. Exact-reference catalogues date individual 16003 watches from about 1977 through an example attributed to 1986. ART Jewellery & Watches lists 1977–1988 without a cited basis.

Core facts

Detail Evidence
Reference 16003
Family Datejust, five-digit generation
Metal Steel and yellow gold. Individual catalogues specify 14K or 18K gold; those descriptions should stay attached to their examples.
Bezel Smooth yellow gold. Ref. 16013 is the related fluted-bezel version.
Movement Cal. 3035 automatic, with quickset date. The movement is identified in multiple exact-reference catalogues.
Crystal Acrylic / plastic is specified in one exact-reference catalogue; this is consistent with the five-digit generation described by Fratello.
Case size Most records say 36 mm. Morton and Galerie Fischer list 35 mm and give no measurement method.
Dials recorded Examples include gold-tone applied indexes, white painted Roman numerals with dot markers, silver geometric indexes and black. This is a partial record rather than a full factory register.
Bracelets recorded The catalogues show two-tone Jubilee and Oyster setups; original delivery remains a watch-specific question.

Where it sits in the line

The 16003 pairs a steel case and yellow-gold smooth bezel; the fluted Yellow Rolesor sibling is the 16013. A Rolex Forums participant reports that a 1988 Swiss price list paired the 16003 with Jubilee 62523. The 1988 entry survives here as a forum participant's report.

Van Straaten dates the five-digit Datejust generation to 1977 and the sapphire-crystal 162xx generation to 1988. These dates describe the generation change; the 16003's latest exact-reference catalogue date in this sample is 1986.

Production outline

Kaplans dates serial 5,230,455 to about 1977. Galerie Fischer records serial 5,316,316 but supplies no watch date. Morton assigns about 1978 to serial 5,885,578, while Dorotheum dates the slightly lower case number 5,880,264 to about 1979. These close serials carry approximate dates in reverse order, so the catalogue estimates cannot anchor a serial-year sequence. Sant’Agostino lists another example from 1986. A directory gives 1977–1988; the cited records offer estimates for individual watches rather than a production span.

Sale date, watch estimate and guarantee date are separate evidence. Galerie Fischer's 2011 date is the auction date; the catalogue leaves the watch date unspecified. Menta describes its example as circa 1978 and reports a guarantee dated 1984, which belongs to that watch's set rather than the reference as a whole.

The February 1989 Swiss price list maps 16013 to the fluted 16233. The reviewed 16003 entries date individual watches; the directory's 1977–1988 span remains unverified.

Movement notes

The auction catalogues identify Cal. 3035, a 27-jewel automatic movement running at 28,800 beats per hour. Van Straaten dates its introduction in the Datejust to 1977 and describes the quickset date: the crown advances the date without turning the hands through a full day. The Cal. 3035 section of the Movements guide lists a 48-hour reserve and other construction details.

Kaplans and Dorotheum list movement numbers separately from case serials; these entries contain no movement-number dating sequence.

Dial map

The auction and archive records document several dial appearances, each tied below to its cited example:

Appearance Record Limit
Gold-tone dial with applied indexes Dorotheum and Galerie Fischer Two individual descriptions; prevalence is unmeasured.
White dial with painted Roman numerals and dot markers Morton Subastas The catalogue identifies the layout; component originality needs watch-level verification.
Silver dial with applied geometric markers Sant’Agostino One dated auction example.
Black dial archived example One seller-described example; its date does not set a production boundary.
Painted Roman-numeral “Buckley” dial Menta Watches listing Collector shorthand for the painted numerals, used here descriptively.

The Menta photographs document aged luminous plots on one Roman-numeral dial. The dated examples offer no evidence of a lume changeover or a dial-and-hand sequence.

Case, bezel, crystal, and crown notes

The defining case combination is steel with a yellow-gold smooth bezel. Catalogues most often give 36 mm; Morton and Galerie Fischer print 35 mm without a measurement method. Both figures are retained.

Kaplans identifies a plastic crystal, and Van Straaten describes acrylic crystals across the five-digit generation. Dorotheum describes a screw-down crown. The Menta photographs show a closed Oyster caseback; its inner caseback bears “16000.” Kaplans records the same marking in its case-number field. Both catalogues identify their watches as ref. 16003, so the internal marking should be kept separate from the case serial.

Bracelets, end links, clasps, and packaging notes

Two-tone Jubilee bracelets appear in the Morton and Galerie Fischer catalogues. The May 2011 Rolex USA parts list assigns Jubilee 62523/455 and Oyster 78363/458 to references 16003, 16013 and 16253; it lists Oyster 78363/458B for 16203, 16233 and 16263. Menta describes its 16003 with 78363/458B. That single watch conflicts with the parts list’s reference assignments. The listing gives no component history for that example. These records document examples and replacement parts; original delivery remains specific to each watch.

Menta's listing pairs a box and 1984 guarantee with this watch; reference-wide packaging patterns are undocumented.

Special branches

One archived 16003 listing says its fluted bezel was fitted by a later owner and that the watch originally had a smooth bezel. It documents one altered watch; the listing offers no broader count of bezel changes.
