Rolex Oyster Perpetual 31 reference 177200 in steel on an Oyster bracelet
Rolex Oyster Perpetual 31, reference 177200

The 177200 is a 31 mm steel Oyster Perpetual with no date and automatic Calibre 2231. A watch sold with its guarantee and receipt in 2007 confirms the reference was in use that year; Rolex still listed it in its August 2020 catalogue. In the September 2020 range, reference 277200 took over the 31 mm position with Calibre 2232. The catalogue records do not establish the last production or delivery date of the 177200.

Where it sits in the line

The 177200 is the 31 mm model; the similar 176200 is 26 mm. Both use Calibre 2231, but they are different references and case sizes. The 36 mm 116000 belongs to the same broad period. The Air-King 114200 was also in the catalogue, but it is a separate line.

Rolex kept a 31 mm Oyster Perpetual in the range in 2020, changing from the 177200 to the 277200. The new model retained the nominal case diameter but moved to Calibre 2232. That is a same-size successor in the catalogue, not an unchanged continuation of the earlier watch.

Production outline

A Cheffins lot for a 177200 included a guarantee dated 1 November 2007 and a purchase receipt dated 29 September 2007. Rolex's catalogue still listed the reference on 9 August 2020. A snapshot from 3 September shows the refreshed Oyster Perpetual range. Those records establish an early dated example and bracket the catalogue change; they do not give factory production boundaries.

The available material does not show a reference-number change during the run. Serial numbers can help date a specific watch, but they do not provide a precise production year on their own. See Reference:Serial-numbers for the system's limits.

Movement notes

Calibre 2231 is an automatic chronometer movement used in both the 177200 and the smaller 26 mm 176200. Heritage records 31 jewels and a 48-hour power reserve on its 2026 example. Those specifications describe that catalogued watch; Rolex did not publish a reference-specific year-by-year movement schedule in the material consulted here.

The 2020 successor, 277200, uses Calibre 2232. Its technical specifications belong to the later reference and should not be read back onto the 177200.

Dial map

The cited records document several dial layouts: a silver Explorer-style dial with baton markers and Arabic numerals on an example delivered in 2007, a white dial with blue Roman numerals, a blue azzurro dial with Roman numerals, and a salmon dial in a later auction catalogue. These are catalogued examples, not a complete dial list or a chronology for each color.

Case, bezel, crystal, and crown

Rolex's archived model specification describes a 31 mm Oystersteel case, domed bezel, sapphire crystal, screw-down Twinlock crown and 100 m water resistance. There is no date display or Cyclops lens. Some auction catalogues use different case descriptions, so the manufacturer's specification is the better reference for construction details.

Bracelet and clasp

The watch was paired with a steel Oyster bracelet and Oysterclasp. Rolex describes the Oyster bracelet's broad, flat three-piece links as a design used across the collection. The cited examples do not establish a universal clasp code, Easylink fitment or bracelet changeover date for the 177200. Bracelet and clasp codes date those components, not the watch head; see Reference:Bracelets.
