Rolex Day-Date 18028
Rolex Day-Date 18028

The 18028 is the smooth-bezel member of the first five-digit Day-Date generation. It uses a yellow-gold 36mm Oyster case, caliber 3055 and a sapphire crystal. Published references place the run from the late 1970s to 1988, when the 3155 generation arrived. The bezel is plain and polished; the dial carries most of the visible variation.

Where it sits in the line

The 18028 is one of the first five-digit Day-Date references. The 18038 uses a fluted bezel, the 18048 a diamond bezel, the 18078 a bark finish, and the 18028 a plain polished bezel. The white-gold smooth reference is the 18029; the platinum smooth references belong to their own material family. The case, movement, crystal and dial choices still need to be read from the individual watch, rather than inferred from the bezel alone.

Production outline

The reference appears in the late-1970s transition to five-digit Day-Dates, with sapphire crystal and caliber 3055, and gives way to the smooth-bezel 18208 when caliber 3155 enters the line in 1988. Rolex production totals for the 18028 have not been published here. The main documented branch is the dial: standard baton and Roman dials sit alongside stone, lacquered, mother-of-pearl and diamond-set examples.

Movement notes

The 18028 uses caliber 3055, the first Day-Date caliber in this generation with a quickset date. Published movement references commonly give 27 jewels, 28,800 vph and about 48 hours of reserve. The date can be corrected from the crown; the day still advances by running the hands through midnight. Double quickset arrives with caliber 3155. The same caliber appears in other five-digit Day-Date references, but a movement number and service history are still the useful evidence for an individual watch.

Dial map

Published 18028 examples include champagne and silvered baton dials, Roman numerals, mother-of-pearl, stone dials such as onyx and bloodstone, lacquered Stella colours, and dégradé dials with diamond markers. These are documented configurations, not a complete factory menu. The broader dial taxonomy for the President line is discussed on the 1803 page.

Case, bezel, crystal, and crown

The case is a 36mm yellow-gold Oyster with sapphire crystal, Cyclops date magnifier, Twinlock crown and screw-down caseback. The bezel is a plain polished gold ring, without the fluting, gem setting or bark finish used on other five-digit Day-Date references. That distinction identifies the reference, but case, dial and movement details still need to be checked on the watch itself.

Bracelets, end links, and clasps

The 18028 is associated with a President bracelet. Auction and specialist examples document 8385 bracelets and 55-series end-link markings, but a bracelet is a replaceable component. A clasp date dates the bracelet, not the watch head. There is no basis here for treating a bracelet code as proof of original delivery; the cross-family detail sits on Reference:Bracelets.
