Rolex Milgauss 6543

From Rolexopedia

Milgauss → 6543

Rolex Milgauss 6543, case 145'111, black honeycomb dial
Christie's 2017 catalogue example, case 145'111.

Christie’s catalogued two stainless-steel ref. 6543 watches as Milgauss examples made around 1955. Both have honeycomb dials and rotating bezels. The catalogues disagree on caliber, case diameter and bracelet fit. Published histories also give different dates for the reference’s arrival.

Where it sits in the line

Christie’s and Hodinkee place the 6543 before ref. 6541. Rolex’s model history dates the 6541 to 1956 but does not discuss the 6543. Both Christie’s examples place the 6543 earlier in the line; the sources leave any overlap with the 6541 and the factory chronology unsettled.

Production outline

Christie’s dates both case 145'159 and case 145'111 to circa 1955. Other published dates conflict: a Phillips lot essay gives 1953; Christie’s’ 2016 essay and Monaco Legend’s 2019 catalogue give 1954; Christie’s’ 2017 essay gives a 1955–1957 run; Revolution and Nomisma date the introduction to 1955; a 2023 Phillips article dates it to 1956; Monochrome gives 1954–1957. Rolex identifies ref. 6541 with 1956. This spread leaves the 6543’s production span unsettled.

Cases 145'111 and 145'159 document two watches; the published examples give no full case-number range or production count.

Movement notes

Christie’s lists Cal. 1065, 25 jewels, in case 145'159 and Cal. 1080, 25 jewels, in case 145'111. Revolution calls the 1080 a modified Cal. 1030; Monochrome also assigns it to the 6543. The auction labels conflict. No reviewed source dates a caliber changeover or resolves whether either entry is a cataloguing error.

Dial map

Both Christie’s watches have honeycomb dials. Its 2012 catalogue describes case 145'159 as dark brown, with dot markers and applied dagger numerals at 3, 6 and 9. The 2017 catalogue calls case 145'111 black, with luminous dots and applied dagger numerals.

The hand description for case 145'159 changes between sales. Christie’s’ 2012 essay says its red-tipped seconds hand was probably fitted during the 1981 service; the 2016 essay calls the hands original. Hodinkee describes the 6543 without the lightning-bolt hand associated with the 6541. The factory hand set remains unresolved across the two examples.

Case, bezel, crystal and crown

Christie’s measured case 145'159 at 37.5 mm and case 145'111 at 37 mm. Revolution gives 38 mm. The 1 mm spread is a difference between published measurements; the sources give no evidence of two case sizes. Christie’s describes case 145'159 as tonneau-shaped, with a screw back and screw-down crown.

Both Christie’s listings describe a black rotating bezel graduated for 60 units. Hodinkee calls the early markings Submariner-style. Christie’s says the bezel on case 145'159 came from the later 6541. Its 2017 essay describes early inserts with Submariner-style graphics, though the essay also contains reference-number errors; that insert description remains a catalogue claim.

Nomisma and Monochrome identify the crystal as Plexiglas. Christie’s leaves the material unspecified, and the editorial accounts do not tie that claim to a specific auction example.

Bracelets, clasps and packaging

Christie’s’ 2012 listing describes case 145'159 with a stainless-steel riveted Oyster bracelet and a deployant clasp stamped 4.57. Its 2017 listing for case 145'111 records a Rolex deployant clasp but no bracelet. In the 2016 essay for case 145'159, Christie’s says the 19 mm lug spacing prevented bracelet attachment. The records disagree about fitment, leaving the original bracelet on case 145'159 uncertain.

The 4.57 stamp dates the clasp, not the watch head. The 2012 lot also included a 1981 Rolex service invoice and presentation box. That package documents what accompanied case 145'159 at sale; it does not establish standard accessories.
