Yellow-gold Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date ref. 1507 with a blue Shantung dial and close-cut bezel
Ref. 1507, Sotheby's, lot 8711.

Auction catalogues identify the 1507 as a yellow-gold Oyster Perpetual Date. The photographed examples have closely cut bezels; catalogues variously call them reeded, milled or bark-finished. Sotheby’s catalogued one as a 1507 with “1503” stamped inside the caseback. Antiquorum and Dorotheum use the combined number “1503/1507.” Auction estimates place individual examples between circa 1962 and 1975, but do not establish the production span.

Where it sits in the line

Collector lists place the 1507 among four-digit Oyster Perpetual Dates and call its bezel “tightly fluted.” In a Rolex Forums thread, the collector who uses that term says it is his own description; he also notes that bezel numbers do not map consistently between Oyster Date and Datejust models. Another member asks whether the bark bezel belongs to the 1607. A separate Reddit breakdown uses “tightly fluted” too. Auction catalogues call individual 1507 bezels reeded or milled; Heritage and Gazette Drouot use bark-finished. Sotheby’s photographs show closely spaced straight cuts. The records reviewed here do not resolve whether these labels describe different finishes or reflect reference mix-ups.

Sotheby's describes its circa-1964 18ct-gold watch as ref. 1507 and reports “1503” stamped inside the caseback; the bracelet is marked 2/63. In 2026 the same house catalogued a blue-dial watch as 1507, though the heading calls it “DateJust” and the dial reads “Oyster Perpetual Date.” Antiquorum and Dorotheum each use the combined number “1503/1507.” The catalogues do not explain why a watch identified as 1507 bears a 1503 caseback stamp.

Production outline

Auction records date individual 1507 or 1503/1507 watches circa 1962, 1964, 1965, 1969 and 1975. Sotheby’s dates case 1,144,916 circa 1964 and the lower case number 1,122,198 circa 1965. These are approximate lot estimates, and the listings give different caliber labels. They do not establish a production start or end date.

The records also disagree on case size. Several catalogue descriptions give 34 mm, but Sotheby's reports 35 mm for its circa-1964 watch and Christie's gives 36 mm for its circa-1975 example. Treat those as measurements of the listed watches, not proof of a case-size revision.

Movement notes

Auction catalogues label individual 1507 or 1503/1507 watches Cal. 1560 or 1570. Rolex’s Cal. 1565 parts sheet identifies a bridge marked 1560; its Cal. 1575 parts catalogue lists date works for refs. 1500, 1501 and 1503. Neither sheet names the 1507, and the auction records reviewed here have no movement photographs. These sources document catalogue labels, not a verified caliber fitment or changeover for the 1507. See Reference:Movements.

Dial map

The catalogues show several dial treatments, not a dated progression. Sotheby's' 2026 sale records a blue Shantung dial with raised pyramid markers. An Antiquorum description reproduced in its archived sale record calls a circa-1962 example silvered with gold markers. Christie's describes a champagne dial with applied gold markers and luminous details on its circa-1969 watch, and a gilt matte dial with baton numerals on a circa-1975 example. These lot descriptions establish individual examples only.

Case, bezel, crystal, and crown

The reviewed catalogues describe 18K or 18ct yellow-gold cases with screw-down backs; Sotheby's and Christie's also specify screw-down crowns. Christie's calls its 1969 bezel reeded and its 1975 bezel milled. Heritage and Gazette Drouot use “bark” (Heritage, lot 54009; Gazette Drouot, lot 1037). Sotheby's photographs of two watches catalogued as 1507 show closely spaced, straight cuts. The Rolex Forums discussion offers one possible explanation for the bark labels: collectors distinguish the 1507 from the bark-bezel 1607, while noting that suffixes do not map cleanly across these model families. The factory finish names remain unverified.

Christie's notes a three-part case and date magnifier on its 1969 example; Heritage describes an acrylic crystal on its 1969 watch. These lot records do not describe a construction change during the run.

Bracelets, clasps, and packaging

Sotheby's describes a yellow-gold brick bracelet on its circa-1964 watch; the clasp is signed Rolex and the bracelet is stamped 2/63. Its condition report separately records the 1503 stamp inside the caseback. The 2026 Sotheby's example was catalogued on an unsigned black leather strap with a gilt Rolex buckle. Christie's lists a Rolex Oyster bracelet on its 1969 example, while Heritage describes a leather strap. These are configurations at sale, not proof of original delivery. The bracelet date belongs to the bracelet, not the watch head.

Sotheby's' 2026 catalogue lists a Rolex presentation box with its Shantung-dial example. Christie's' 1975 lot came with a Rolex leather-covered box and certificate. Neither record makes those accessories standard to the reference.

A 2026 Sotheby’s lot documents a blue Shantung dial with raised pyramid markers. It is one recorded configuration; the catalogue gives no order or delivery history for the dial.
