Rolex 14060M Submariner
Rolex 14060M Submariner

The 14060M is the no-date Submariner reference produced from around 1999/2000 until 2012. It followed the 14060 with caliber 3130 and a COSC certification, while keeping the 40mm steel case, black aluminum bezel, sapphire crystal, and no-date dial. Two-line dials dominate the earlier part of the run; four-line COSC dials and engraved rehauts appear on later examples. The 114060 replaced it in 2012 with a broader case and ceramic bezel.

Where it sits in the line

The 14060M follows the 14060, which used caliber 3000, and precedes the ceramic-bezel 114060. It keeps the 40mm steel case, no-date layout, sapphire crystal, and black aluminum insert associated with the late five-digit Submariner. The date reference 16610 and the no-date 14060M ran alongside one another until the 16610 ended around 2010.

The reference changed during its run without a new case number. The movement received the COSC modification at the start of the M run; the dial acquired the extra certification lines later, and engraved rehaut examples appear near the end. The case, dial, bracelet, and movement should therefore be dated as separate components.

What changed during the run

  • The 14060M uses caliber 3130 instead of the 14060's caliber 3000 and carries the COSC certification associated with the M designation.
  • Earlier examples have two-line dials and a plain inner rehaut. Later examples use four-line dials and, on documented watches, engraved rehauts.
  • The 93150/501B bracelet and aluminum bezel remained the reference's documented base configuration; service replacements can create mixed details.

Production outline and specification timeline

The dates below are approximate collector dating. Rolex did not publish a complete serial-to-component schedule, and transition watches overlap.

Two-line dial era

Early 14060M dials read "Submariner" and "660ft = 200m" without the COSC wording. They are associated with the start of the caliber 3130/M run and generally have a plain inner rehaut. The dial can look close to a late 14060; the movement and reference markings are what separate the two.

Four-line dial era

Around 2007, later dials added "Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified" above the existing text. Published examples place the change in the 2007–2008 period, rather than on one universal calendar date. Four-line dials are found with later engraved-rehaut cases, but the two features should still be checked independently.

Serial numbers

Letter-prefix serials can provide a broad production clue, while the random alphanumeric system used by Rolex later does not provide a public year chart. The prefix is not a guarantee of the dial, rehaut, bracelet, or movement fitted to an individual watch. Use the serial with the physical configuration and delivery or service records.

Movement notes

The 14060M uses caliber 3130, the no-date movement that replaced caliber 3000 in the 14060. The published specifications are 31 jewels, 28,800 vph, approximately 48 hours of power reserve, hacking seconds, and no quick-set mechanism because there is no date display. The M designation is used for the modified, COSC-certified version.

Collectors and technical references describe changes from the 3000 including a larger balance, full balance bridge, and Breguet overcoil. These describe the movement family; they do not create a separate 14060M sub-reference. Service movements and parts should be checked against the individual watch.

Dial map

The 14060M has a glossy black no-date dial with applied white-gold-surround markers, Mercedes hour and minute hands, and a lollipop seconds hand. Earlier dials carry two lines: "Submariner / 660ft = 200m". Later dials add "Superlative Chronometer / Officially Certified" above those lines. Super-LumiNova is associated with the 14060M run; service dials can change the expected configuration.

Case, bezel, crystal, and crown

The 14060M has a 40mm Oyster case in Rolex 904L steel, crown guards, a Triplock screw-down crown, sapphire crystal, and 300m water resistance. The crystal has no Cyclops because the watch has no date. The bezel uses a black aluminum insert and rotates in one direction for dive-time measurement; collector references generally describe the assembly as 120-click.

The inner rehaut is plain on earlier examples. Engraved ROLEX text and the serial marking appear on later watches, usually alongside the four-line dial, but the rollout was gradual. A laser-etched coronet in the crystal can also be replaced during service, so it should not be used alone to date the watch.

Bracelets, end links, clasps, and packaging notes

Documented delivery examples use an Oyster 93150 bracelet with 501B end links, hollow links, and a stamped folding clasp. The 14060M did not leave the factory with the later Glidelock clasp. A bracelet or clasp may have been replaced during service, so its code dates that component rather than the watch head.

Boxes, papers, and hang tags follow the period and delivery history. They can support provenance but are not reference-specific proof of originality. Check the case, dial, movement, bracelet, clasp, and paperwork as separate parts.

Historical market and auction record

The cited auction and dealer records cover ordinary two-line and four-line watches as well as custom or presentation examples. The Block Island presentation watch, the Antiquorum "Big Dog Edition," Phillips lot CH080523, and NOS dealer listings are individual records; they are not a production census. Custom dials and presentation engravings should not be used as price or specification anchors for an ordinary 14060M.

Secondary market notes

The two-line/four-line distinction is useful when describing a watch, but it does not by itself establish condition, originality, or value. Results depend on the dial and bezel, case condition, bracelet and clasp, service history, papers, provenance, and sale date. No complete production total or serial-linked component register was found.

Successor

The 114060 replaced the 14060M at Baselworld 2012 with a broader Maxi case, a black Cerachrom bezel, a solid-link Oyster bracelet with Glidelock clasp, and caliber 3130. It kept the no-date layout and 300m water-resistance rating, while its case and bracelet differed from the five-digit platform.
