Rolex Oyster Perpetual 6584

Oyster Perpetual → 6584

14-karat yellow-gold Rolex Oyster Perpetual ref. 6584 from Freeman's 2017 catalogue
Freeman's, Summer Edit 2017, lot 2.

Reference 6584 appears in records dated from the mid-1950s onward. The best-supported examples are 14-karat gold watches with automatic Cal. 1030. Auction catalogues also assign the number to steel watches, though conflicting caseback markings leave that attribution uncertain; a clear between-the-lugs reference is needed.

Where it sits in the line

The 6584 is a no-date Oyster Perpetual from the Cal. 1030 period. The Oyster Perpetual family page groups it with the 1950s flat-caseback references. Eguchi Vintage identifies a steel watch as 6580 and separately records 6584 inside its caseback. A Rolex Forums owner reports a crossed-out 6584 marking on a watch identified as 6580; the reason for that strike-through is unknown.

Production outline

The archived Artcurial 2009 catalogue attributes a circa-1954 steel watch to 6584. A Fine Watch dates its gold example to 1955; Freeman's dates its gold lot to circa the 1960s. These are dates for individual watches, not production limits.

Movement notes

Freeman's names Cal. 1030 in a gold 6584 catalogue entry; Artcurial and Antiquorum assign it to steel watches catalogued under 6584 or 6080/6584. Freeman's and EBTH describe their movements as automatic with 25 jewels. These are specimen-level attributions. See Movements for other documented Cal. 1030 fitments.

Dial map

The 6584 dealer listing shows a gold example with triangular markers at 3, 6, and 9, called “shark teeth.” Artcurial describes an ivory waffle-pattern dial with applied wedge markers and Arabic numerals. Antiquorum lists a steel watch jointly as 6080/6584, with a silver dial, applied darts, and 3-6-9 numerals. A forum sale post reports a waffle dial on a claimed steel 6584; its images are unavailable, so that layout remains a seller's description. The records give examples, not a sequence of dial changes.

Freeman's describes its gold example's dial as silvered. A Fine Watch says its 1955 gold example has a refinished silver dial. None of these records dates the dial layouts or identifies the factory options.

Case, bezel, crystal, and crown notes

Freeman's records a 14-karat yellow-gold case and an inner caseback stamped 6584; its catalogue gives an approximate 32 mm diameter. The other 6584 listing attributes a 14-karat gold case to Genex, and an EBTH archive lot records the Genex key-12 mark on a 34 mm gold example. The Artcurial archive describes a 34 mm steel watch; Antiquorum's steel entry uses the joint reference 6080/6584. A separate Aste Bolaffi lot is titled 6584 while its text says the caseback is stamped 6564. These steel entries have weaker reference support than the gold examples.

Catalogue dimensions range from about 32 to 35 mm; the difference may reflect variant cases or inconsistent measuring. The Field Manual lists a smooth bezel. Available records do not settle the crystal or crown specification. Aste Bolaffi lot 179 gives case number 125001 and an I.56 date, but its title says 6584 while the description reports a 6564 caseback stamp. Treat the date as part of that mismatched catalogue entry, not as a confirmed 6584 serial anchor. For general dating limits, see Serial numbers.

Bracelets, end links, clasps, and packaging notes

The Freeman's lot and the 6584 dealer listing show leather straps on individual examples. Neither description identifies its strap as original to the watch. Box and paper records are sparse.

Special branches

Several listings document gold cases. Artcurial attributes a steel example to 6584, while Antiquorum uses the combined designation 6080/6584. Eguchi records 6584 inside a case identified as 6580; a Rolex Forums owner reports that the number was crossed out on another 6580. Aste Bolaffi's lot title also conflicts with its 6564 caseback description. For a steel specimen, the between-the-lugs number is the useful check.

Historical market and auction record

Record Date and configuration What it establishes
Artcurial, lot 870, archived catalogue 2009 sale; described as a circa-1954, 34 mm steel watch with Cal. 1030 and waffle dial A catalogue attribution to 6584; the original Artcurial lot page was not located
Antiquorum, Geneva, lot 133 2010; 34 mm steel, Cal. 1030, silvered dial with applied darts and 3-6-9; labelled 6080/6584 A documented watch with a joint reference attribution; the catalogue does not isolate 6584 as the case reference
Freeman's, lot 2 2017; 14K yellow gold, about 32 mm, Cal. 1030; inner caseback reported as 6584 The clearest auction record for a gold 6584; catalogue gives a circa-1960s estimate and warns that parts may have been repaired or restored
EBTH, item ITMG535812 Archived 14K gold example, 34 mm, Cal. 1030; listing records 6584 and Genex marks inside the case A second detailed gold specimen; the listing gives no reliable production date
Aste Bolaffi, lot 179 2023; lot title says ref. 6584, case number 125001, Cal. 1030; text describes steel and a caseback marked 6564, I.56 The mismatched title and caseback leave the reference assignment unresolved
