Rolex Oyster Royal 2280
Pre-Perpetual Oyster → 2280
Ref. 2280 is a manual-wind Oyster. Auction catalogues use names including Oyster Royal, Oyster Royal Observatory, Oyster Royalite and Oyster Majestic Observatory; one Christie’s lot title also includes Observator and R.W.C. Ltd. The lots show centre and subsidiary seconds, sector and 12/24-hour dials, and steel bracelet pairings. Their dates range from circa 1935 to circa 1943, with other catalogues giving only “1940s”; these are dates assigned to individual watches, not confirmed production limits. Where it sits in the line
Oyster Royal appears in several ref. 2280 catalogue titles. Other lots use Oyster Royal Observatory, Oyster Royalite or Oyster Majestic Observatory; a Christie’s title also names Observator and R.W.C. Ltd. These labels belong to individual watches. The records do not establish a naming sequence or an observatory connection. Production outline
Christie’s dates examples to circa 1935 and circa 1943. Bonhams dates a Murdock’s Cape Town example to circa 1936; Christie’s gives 1939 for a steel watch with a pink-gold bezel; Phillips dates case 130’527 to circa 1941; and Toovey’s dates case 159151 to circa 1942. Antiquorum assigns circa 1940 to case 77585 and Sotheby’s circa 1942 to case 217’903. These are catalogue estimates for separate watches, not factory production dates. The examples differ in case size, dial and seconds display. The catalogued diameters are 29, 30, 31 or 33 mm. Christie’s 1939 lot pairs steel with a pink-gold bezel, while the other cited listings generally describe steel cases. Movement notes
The lot descriptions identify manual-wind movements but do not converge on a numbered caliber. Bonhams gives 15 jewels and a patented Superbalance; Christie’s records 17 jewels in its circa-1935 example; and Phillips lists 17 jewels without a caliber. Toovey’s movement photograph reads “ROLEX 17 RUBIES” and “PATENTED SUPER BALANCE.” Bonhams Christie’s Phillips Toovey’s
Antiquorum describes a 10½-ligne, 17-jewel lever movement with Superbalance and a self-compensating Breguet spring. Sotheby’s lists a 10½ mechanical, 17-jewel movement in case 217’903. Neither catalogue supplies a numbered caliber. Antiquorum, lot 466 Sotheby’s, lot 8042
Dial map
Christie’s circa-1935 example has a silvered dial with luminous Arabic numerals and subsidiary seconds. A second Christie’s lot, also dated circa 1935, has a two-tone gilt dial, inner 24-hour indication and centre seconds; its title records Oyster Royalite, Observator and R.W.C. Ltd. Antiquorum’s two-tone silver-and-gold dial uses radium-coated Arabic numerals, a red 24-hour scale and subsidiary seconds. Toovey’s champagne dial combines luminous Arabic numerals with an outer seconds track and inner red 24-hour scale. Phillips describes blued hands and small centre seconds; Christie’s circa-1943 dial has an outer ring calibrated to 60 units. Christie’s Christie’s Antiquorum Toovey’s Phillips Christie’s
Antiquorum’s 2025 catalogue identifies a circa-1940 Oyster Royal, case 77585, with a sector dial and 15 jewels. Its photograph shows that lot’s dial; the surviving records do not establish an order in which these layouts appeared. Antiquorum, lot 214
Case, bezel, crystal and crown
Christie’s describes the circa-1943 case as tonneau-shaped, with a smooth bezel, screw back and screw-down crown. Bonhams also records a tonneau case with screw back and crown. Toovey’s identifies a milled screw-off back and Oyster Patent winding button. The listed sizes come from separate catalogue measurements. Christie’s Bonhams Toovey’s
Christie’s 1939 lot is a steel case with pink-gold bezel and hooded lugs. Spangaro describes a domed plexiglass crystal on one 1940s example; this is a lot-specific catalogue description. The records do not give a pressure-test depth. Christie’s, 1939 example Spangaro, lot 30

Bracelet, clasp and packaging
Antiquorum catalogued a 1940s ref. 2280 accompanied by a stainless-steel Oyster bracelet. Christie’s described a circa-1935 ref. 2280 with a stainless-steel Rolex Jubilee bracelet and clasp. Rolex dates the Jubilee’s introduction to 1945, so Christie’s lot description does not establish that bracelet as original to a circa-1935 watch. Both auction records document the pairings at sale, not original delivery. Antiquorum, lot 51 Christie’s, lot 176 Rolex, Datejust and Jubilee history
Toovey’s photograph shows a Rolex-crown buckle attached to its lot’s brown leather strap. The catalogue does not date the buckle or establish its original pairing. Phillips also lists a ref. 2280 on leather. Toovey’s Phillips
