Yellow-gold Rolex ref. 4364 with a pink dial marked Chronomètre
Christie's, case 295355, circa 1944

Ref. 4364 is a manually wound, centre-seconds Rolex wristwatch recorded in gold cases, most often 37–38 mm. Auction catalogues date individual examples from about 1943 to 1950; these estimates are lot dates, not production limits. Sources apply both Chronometer/Chronomètre and Precision labels. Christie's photographs show “ROLEX CHRONOMÈTRE” on one dial. The available records do not establish a formal model name.

Where it sits in the line

Christie's 2024 photographs show “ROLEX CHRONOMÈTRE” on the dial. Antiquorum's 1999 and 2018 catalogues use “Certified Chronometer” or “Chronometer”; other auction catalogues file 4364 as Precision. These labels may refer to dial wording, movement rating, or catalogue taxonomy.

Production outline

Antiquorum dates case 375110 to circa 1943; Christie's dates case 295355 to circa 1944. Monaco Legend assigns 1945 to case 375096; Schuler dates case 391904 to the 1940s; Christie's, Sotheby's and Meeting Art date separate watches with cases 426783, 391849 and 554633 to around 1946–47. Dorotheum dates its case to circa 1950. These are auction-house estimates for individual watches. They place documented examples across the 1940s and around 1950; factory production limits remain unknown.

Movement notes

Descriptions vary between watches. Christie's gives movement no. E10067 for a 1940s example and says it was timed in six positions. A second 1940s lot gives movement E22397, a monometallic balance and the same timing report. Antiquorum describes 17- and 18-jewel movements, with six or seven adjustments, a Breguet hairspring and Superbalance in separate lots. Christie's records 18 jewels and a patented Superbalance in case 426783. Dorotheum names Cal. 710, movement no. 19229, 15 jewels and a Breguet hairspring in its circa-1950 watch. Meeting Art assigns Cal. 710 to movement E66008 in case 554633. These reports vary by watch; they do not establish a single movement specification for every 4364.

Both Cal. 710 assignments remain catalogue identifications tied to their individual watches. Christie's records give movement numbers E10067 and E22397, each timed in six positions, without naming a caliber. The Christie's 2024 photo set shows the watch, dial and caseback but no movement view, so it cannot confirm either Cal. 710 attribution.

Dial map

The Christie's case 295355 photographs show a pink dial with applied gold batons and a “ROLEX CHRONOMÈTRE” signature. Other catalogue descriptions include silvered dials with applied indexes, a black dial, and a champagne dial. Antiquorum's 2002 black-dial example is described as having applied yellow-gold batons and Dauphine hands; the Finarte catalogue also lists two black-dial examples under different case numbers. These are documented dial descriptions; the factory's full dial range remains unknown. Schuler notes patina on its case 391904; Christie's, Dorotheum and Meeting Art describe altered dials on separate examples.

Case, bezel, crystal, and crown notes

Gold cases dominate the records: yellow gold in the Schuler, Sotheby's and Monaco Legend lots, and pink gold in the Christie's case 295355 and Antiquorum case 375110. Christie's, Schuler and Sotheby's give 37 mm; Monaco Legend also gives 37 mm. Meeting Art lists case 554633 at 38 mm. Antiquorum's 2018 listing for case 375110 gives 42 mm, while other exact-reference catalogues list 37–38 mm. The discrepancy remains unexplained.

Christie's and Antiquorum describe downturned or teardrop lugs; Antiquorum also notes a stepped bezel. Case details vary in the descriptions. The catalogues leave crystal and crown specifications unstated.

Bracelets, end links, clasps, and packaging notes

The reviewed examples are shown or listed on leather straps. Christie's 2024 lot includes a pink-gold Rolex buckle, but that listing alone does not establish original delivery. Bracelet fitment, end-link choices, boxes, and papers remain undocumented at reference level.

Special branches

Finarte catalogues two black-dial examples under separate case numbers, 477798 and 477771. The available descriptions do not establish whether either dial is original or whether the watches belong to a distinct branch.
