Rolex 14000 Air-King
Air-King › 14000
The 14000 is the Air-King's first sapphire-crystal reference. Reference tables generally place it between 1989 and 2000, although the start and end dates are disputed in the sources. It bridges the long-serving 5500 (Cal. 1530, then 1520) and the Cal. 3130 generation that follows on the 14000M and 114200. The 34mm steel Oyster case remains, while the crystal, movement, lug treatment, and dial range change. Documented dials include silvered and black stick markers, salmon, blue, Roman numerals, Arabic numerals, and the 3-6-9 layout.
The reference uses Cal. 3000, a 28,800 vph time-only automatic with 27 jewels, hacking seconds, and roughly 48 hours of reserve. Rolex did not submit it for COSC certification, so the dials read PRECISION, as on late Cal. 1520 5500 examples.

Where it sits in the line
Most published histories place the 14000's introduction around 1989, replacing the 5500. Ross Povey's Revolution account places the changeover later, in 1990–1991, so the exact handoff should be treated as a source disagreement. The 34mm steel case remains, while the crystal changes to sapphire, the movement to Cal. 3000, and the lugs are generally non-drilled. The 14000 is the smooth-bezel member of this Air-King generation; the 14010 uses an engine-turned bezel.
The 14010 runs alongside it as the engine-turned-bezel twin, identical to the 14000 apart from the bezel finish.
The 14000 is the time-only Air-King reference associated with Cal. 3000. The 14000M follows around 2000 with Cal. 3130. The 114200 follows in 2007 with revised case proportions, an engraved rehaut on later examples, and the first COSC-certified Air-King movement. The 116900 and 126900 belong to later design generations.
Cal. 3000 also appears in the no-date Submariner 14060, which was likewise non-COSC before the 14060M. The shared movement helps place the 14000 in Rolex's early-1990s time-only and no-date sports range.
Production outline
Marcus Siems' Air-King family history, Erik Slaven at Monochrome (January 2025), Robb Report's Air-King guide (Allen Farmelo and Gareth Munden) and Watch-Wiki all give 1989 as the introduction year. Several histories place the 14000 at the 1989 Baselworld period, while Ross Povey's Revolution Watch account keeps the 5500 in the catalogue until 1990 and dates the 14000 to 1991. The sources do not establish a clean no-overlap cutover.
The end year is contested at the margin. Monochrome and Robb Report read 1999, with the 14000M succeeding in 2000; Watch-Wiki reads 2000. Both fit if 14000 assembly effectively ends in 1999 and 1999-built watches sell through into early 2000 alongside the new 14000M. 1989–1999 is the active production span, with 1999–2000 the late-stock window where the two references ran briefly in parallel.
The drilled-lug question is worth pinning down. Marcus Siems reads the 14000 as non-drilled from launch in 1989. Monochrome reads the drilled-lug architecture as "eliminated" as part of the 14000 redesign, which implies drilled-lug 5500s giving way to non-drilled 14000s at the cutover. Both agree that surviving 14000s are non-drilled; what is unresolved is whether any earliest 1989 examples briefly kept the drilling. No major-house lot has surfaced a drilled-lug 14000, which leans the answer toward non-drilled from launch.
Rolex does not publish production totals. The cited record is weighted toward editorial, dealer and regional-auction listings rather than major-house catalogues. Rolex has not published production totals, and the available auction record is too thin to establish a representative market.
Movement notes
Cal. 3000 is a 28,800 vph time-only automatic: 27 jewels, 4 Hz, approximately 48 hours of power reserve, hacking seconds, and bidirectional self-winding. It belongs to Rolex's 3000-series generation that followed the 1500-family calibres used in earlier Air-Kings.
It is not COSC chronometer rated. The cited 14000 examples use the “PRECISION” line associated with the late Cal. 1520 5500s; replacement or unusual dials should be checked individually. The contemporary Submariner 14060 ran the same way on the same caliber until COSC certification arrived with the 14060M in 2001. The Air-King waited longer still: the 14000M succeeded the 14000 in 2000 on Cal. 3130 and stayed uncertified, and the 114200 of 2007 is the first chronometer-rated Air-King in the line's history.
The step from Cal. 3000 to Cal. 3130 is incremental. The 3130 (1999/2000 onward) goes to 31 jewels and later examples add the Parachrom hairspring, but both calibers share the same 28,800 vph base, the same hack feature, the same bidirectional self-winding architecture. Case envelope, dial conventions and bracelet barely move across the 14000-to-14000M boundary either. What changes is the movement plate underneath.
Dial map
The 14000 has a broader documented dial range than the standard silvered and black 5500 examples. Corporate and crest dials are separate commission branches; salmon, blue, Roman, and Arabic variants are documented on 14000 watches.
Silvered with applied stick markers
The standard documented dial has a sunburst silver ground, applied stick or baton hour markers, "OYSTER PERPETUAL" and "AIR-KING" in two lines above six with "PRECISION" above them. This layout appears throughout the cited production record.
Matte black with applied stick markers
The black equivalent: matte rather than glossy, applied stick or baton indices, the same OYSTER PERPETUAL / AIR-KING / PRECISION text. Examples are described in the market at different prices; the dial alone does not establish a premium.
Salmon dial
New to the Air-King with the 14000 — the 5500 ran silvered and black almost exclusively. Recorded across the 1990s production, sometimes paired with 3-6-9 Arabic numerals as a salmon Explorer configuration. Examples appear in auction and dealer records, including salmon 3-6-9 configurations. The published sources do not establish a uniform price premium.
3-6-9 Explorer dial
The 3-6-9 layout also appears on earlier Air-King examples. Black or silvered ground, Arabic numerals at three, six and nine, baton or dagger indices at the other hours, often in matte rather than gloss finish. It continues the Explorer-style dial language seen on some 5500 examples. Auction and dealer examples vary in condition, provenance, and dial originality.
Roman numeral dial
Roman numerals at every hour or at the cardinal positions, on standard silvered or black grounds. The Roman 14000 resembles Datejust dial layouts more than the traditional Air-King design. It is one of the catalogue variants documented for this reference.
Arabic numeral dial
A full set of Arabic numerals at every hour rather than the 3-6-9 Explorer layout, silvered or black. Less commonly encountered than the standard stick-marker dial.
Blue dial
Sunburst blue or matte blue ground with applied stick markers. Blue examples are documented in both standard and special-order contexts. The available sources do not establish their production share or a consistent price premium.
The concentric "wave" dial that becomes a 114200-era hallmark does not appear on the 14000; the wave pattern arrives only with the 2007 redesign. The "Tutti Frutti" multi-color accent palette (white, black, salmon, blue, green, yellow accents around the chapter ring) is likewise a 5500-era and 114200-era story rather than a 14000 trait.
Lume follows the period. Tritium, marked "T SWISS MADE T" at six, runs through approximately 1997–98; Luminova and a plain "SWISS MADE" follow on later production. Dial text can help narrow an approximate period, but it should be checked against the serial, case, movement, and any service history.
Case and construction
34mm across, 11.2mm thick, 43mm lug to lug: a three-piece stainless steel Oyster of case middle, threaded caseback and threaded crown. Every 14000 is steel. No precious-metal example surfaces in the auction record. The 14010 engine-turned-bezel sibling is steel, not gold or two-tone; the 14238 / 14239 references are the era's documented 18K gold variants.
The crystal is sapphire, the first on an Air-King, and it puts the reference on the modern Rolex standard the rest of the Oyster sport line had already adopted by the late 1980s. The bezel is fixed, smooth steel; the engine-turned version belongs to the 14010, not to the 14000 itself.
The crown is a Twinlock, Rolex's two-gasket sealed-crown patent. Lug width is 19mm with non-drilled spring-bar holes — the drilled-lug architecture that ran across the 5500 and earlier Air-Kings ends with the 14000 redesign. Water resistance is rated at 100m, double the 5500's 50m. Compared with the 5500, the cited case descriptions show a flush bezel and a more uniform case-middle finish.
Bracelets, end-links, and clasps
19mm lug width across the production. The period-correct delivery configuration is the 78350 solid-link Oyster bracelet with end-link 557, moving to 557B across the run; a documented 1996 example carries the 78350 and 557B as delivered.
The 78350 carries the 14000 from the 1989 launch through to 2000, with the matte 557 end-link giving way to the refined 557B on later production. A hollow-link 78240 is a later refit rather than the documented original delivery for the 14000; if present, record it as a service-era bracelet.
A folded-link Jubilee bracelet was a period catalogue option and turns up on a minority of surviving examples, the same Datejust-style Jubilee the broader Oyster Perpetual and Datejust line offered. Most surviving 14000s wear the Oyster.
Special branches
Domino's Pizza 14000
The Tom Monaghan Domino's Pizza Rolex incentive program ran straight from the 5500 era into the 14000. Cameron Barr's journal piece of 29 July 2022 records a 1996 14000 with a "tilted" full-color logo at six o'clock, the second-generation Domino's dial and distinct from the earlier 5500-era logo-on-its-side arrangement. Late-program Domino's 14000s drop the logo entirely, leaving only the "Domino's" signature near six alongside Luminova and SWISS MADE text.
The Domino's commission outlives the 14000. Christie's sale 21040, lot 136 documents a Domino's-dial 114200 with case number 96A51575, which carries the program past the 14000 and into the 2007 reference; on the documented record the 114200, not the 14000, is the last Air-King to wear a Domino's dial. No Domino's 14000M has surfaced. What the 14000 marks is the second-generation dial rather than the end of the program.
AC Milan Limited Edition 52/75
Bonhams sale 27147, lot 227 records an example numbered 52/75, purchased in August 1995. The watch has a sunburst blue dial with an AC Milan crest at three o'clock and a numbered caseback inscription. The lot supports this specific limited-edition branch; it does not establish details for every example. The AC Milan watch is a one-off football commemoration rather than part of the corporate-incentive programs that produced the Domino's, Pool Intairdril and Winn-Dixie examples.
Tiffany & Co.-signed 14000
Tiffany-signed 14000 examples are documented in dealer and auction records. One listed 1991 example has Tiffany & Co. signed papers, while another reported watch has a Roman-numeral dial. These records show that retailer-signed examples exist; they do not establish how many were made or whether this was the final Air-King retailer-signed branch.
14010 engine-turned-bezel sibling
The 14010 is the 14000's twin reference: same case, same Cal. 3000, same dial palette, an engine-turned bezel finish in place of the smooth steel. The Air-King family index treats the 14010 as the engine-turned-bezel sibling of the 14000. Its production dates follow the same source disagreement as the smooth-bezel reference, so the bezel, serial, movement, and dial should be checked together.
Historical market and auction record
The cited record is weighted toward dealer listings and regional UK auctioneers; major houses have relatively few catalogued 14000 lots through 2025.
Published sale records include standard and special-dial examples, but the sample is too small to state a reliable price range. Condition, papers, bracelet components, dial originality, and commission provenance all affect the result. Tiffany-signed and Domino's watches should be compared with the individual lot descriptions rather than treated as a single category.
Antiquorum's 2008 "Revolution" Rolex-themed sale included Air-King retailer-signed examples — Domino's, Winn Dixie, Pool Intairdril — though which of those lots were 5500s and which were 14000s is not recorded in the published references.
Authentication
For an individual watch, compare the dial's lume marking with the serial range, case, movement, and service history. Tritium ("T SWISS MADE T") is associated with earlier examples and plain "SWISS MADE" with later dials, but replacement dials and transitional examples exist. A mismatch is a reason to investigate, not proof of a replacement.
The case stamp inside the caseback should read 14000, with none of the caseback duality of the 6552 era. Roman-quarter date codes had been retired from inside-caseback stamping by the 14000 era, replaced by full-date stampings or left off. The case-number band runs roughly from L-prefix serials — the 1989–90 start of letter-prefix serials replacing the older numeric system — through C, S, U, X and Y prefix bands across the production.
The expected movement is Cal. 3000. A Cal. 1520 would need an explanation because published reference guides associate the 14000 with Cal. 3000. A Cal. 3130 belongs to the later 14000M generation; if found in a watch marked 14000, document the movement number and service history before drawing a conclusion.
The bracelet usually helps date the watch. A 78350 with 557 end-link is original-era, a 78350 with 557B is mid-to-late production, and a hollow-link 78240 is a service-era refit that does not match the 14000's production window. Refits are common and should be flagged at sale.
Dial condition still needs inspection. A clean dial can be original, refinished, or a later service part; compare printing, lume, hands, serial range, and documented service work.
