Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Ref. 116523 — two-tone Rolesor

The 116523 is the steel-and-yellow-gold Rolesor Daytona in Rolex’s first in-house chronograph generation. It uses caliber 4130, a steel Oyster case, an 18k yellow-gold engraved bezel and a steel-and-gold Oyster bracelet. Introduced around 2000 alongside the 116520 and 116528, it was replaced by the 116503 generation in 2016.

Where it sits in the line

The 116523 succeeds the 16523, the Zenith-era Rolesor Daytona, and shares the 40mm Oyster case family, screw-down pushers and engraved gold bezel with the 116520 and 116528. The principal change from the 16523 is caliber 4130 replacing the Zenith-based 4030. The 116503 replaced it in 2016. Certification wording and testing standards changed across the generations, so the watch’s papers and period documentation should be checked.

Production outline

The reference is generally dated from about 2000 to 2016. P-, V- and G-serial examples appear in the cited records, followed by later random serial formats, but serials date an individual watch only approximately. Lume descriptions vary by catalogue and period; published sources do not provide a definitive 116523 cutover table. The APH misprint is documented on parts of the 116520 record and is not established here as a 116523 variant.

Movement notes

Every 116523 is described with caliber 4130 in the cited reference record. The movement uses a column wheel and vertical clutch, runs at 28,800 vph on 44 jewels and has an approximately 72-hour reserve. The regulating spring and certification wording should be checked against the production period and service history. The 4130 moves the running seconds to six and the 12-hour counter to nine compared with the 4030-era layout.

Across this generation, cal 4130 is Rolex's first wholly in-house chronograph. Thirty-seven years of bought-in chronograph bases — the Valjoux 72 family from 1963 onward, the Zenith El Primero base from 1988 — ended when the 4130 launched in 2000. The 116523 sits in the first model year of that transition. For the full caliber lineage and the 4030-to-4130 architecture comparison see Reference:Movements#cal-4130.

The 4130 also gives the quickest visual separation from the 16523. Running seconds moved from 9 o'clock to 6, and the 12-hour chronograph register moved from 6 to 9, so the subdial layout is a useful visual check when comparing the two generations.

The cited 116523 record includes black and white dials with gold surrounds, mother-of-pearl, champagne and anthracite or grey-rhodium examples. Some variants are supported by a single auction lot, so the table records documented configurations rather than a complete factory catalogue.

variant years distinguishing features notes
Black, gold-trim hour markers 2000–2016 Black dial; applied luminous markers with yellow gold surrounds; gold hands The standard early-production Rolesor dial. Later black-dial production reads as black lacquer with red Daytona script
White "Panda", gold-trim markers 2000–2016 White dial with gold luminous surrounds; champagne sub-registers; gold hands The Sotheby's Capsule Collection 2019 circa-2001 lot is the canonical early example. Champagne sub-registers distinguish the Rolesor white dial from the steel 116520's silver-ringed Panda
Mother-of-pearl (white MOP) mid-production Iridescent white MOP centre; gold luminous surrounds; gold hands Documented across the era as a Rolesor and gold-only configuration; not produced in the steel 116520
Tahitian mother-of-pearl mid-production Dark Tahitian MOP centre; gold luminous surrounds Documented from circa-2003–2008 production; less common than white MOP
Champagne 2009 onward Champagne dial with gold luminous surrounds; gold hands Chromalight-era variant
Anthracite / grey-rhodium soleil late production Sunburst grey or rhodium dial; gold luminous surrounds The April 2020 Sotheby's Watches Weekly lot (case 0UW51011, circa 2011–2012) and the 2011 GT Champion presentation watch both carry sunburst grey dials; uncommon but documented
Black lacquer, red Daytona script 2011 onward High-gloss black lacquer; red "Daytona" text Late-production black configuration documented in the April 2020 Sotheby's Watches Weekly lot

The sodalite stone-dial pattern that runs across the gold-only 116528 and the white gold 116519 is not attested on the Rolesor 116523 in the published record. Stone dials and diamond-set variants on Rolesor Daytonas surface at auction sporadically, but the documentation is thin, so a 116523 carrying a stone or diamond configuration has to be checked against its own lot record.

Diamond-set dials sit in a different category from stone-dial claims. A documented black diamond-set 116523 keeps the normal Rolesor case, yellow-gold tachymetre bezel and Oyster bracelet, so the dial belongs to the reference's own production without implying a gem-set bezel or an altered case. Catalogue-backed diamond dials belong in the dial map; aftermarket gem bezels and coated cases do not.

Case, bezel, crystal, and crown

The case is the steel 40mm Oyster form used in the 4130 Daytona family, with an engraved 18k yellow-gold tachymeter bezel and a Rolesor crown component as documented on examples. Cerachrom arrived with the 2016 116500LN generation; the 116523 record is associated with the engraved gold bezel. Case measurements and replaced components should be recorded from the individual watch.

Bracelets, end links, and clasps

The 78493 steel-and-yellow-gold Oyster bracelet is documented on 116523 examples. Easylink appears on later cal 4130 bracelets, while early examples may use an Oysterlock without the comfort extension; the exact transition should be checked on the clasp. Bracelet and clasp codes date those components, not automatically the watch head. The 78493 attribution should be confirmed against the bracelet and end links on the individual watch.

The Daytona never adopted the Glidelock micro-extension that came to the Submariner-line clasps in 2010. Easylink is the only on-bracelet adjustment the 116523 ever offered.

Special branches

The 2011 Rolex 24 At Daytona GT Champion 116523

The 2011 presentation watch is an individual example, not a separate configuration. The 2011 Rolex 24 At Daytona — the season-opening endurance race at Daytona International Speedway, that year presented by Crown Royal Cask No. 16 — was won in GT class by The Racer's Group, whose #67 Porsche 997 GT3 Cup was shared by Andy Lally, Spencer Pumpelly, Brendan Gaughan, Wolf Henzler, and Steven Bertheau. The trophy watch awarded to the winning team was a Rolesor 116523, G-serial circa 2010, with a grey-rhodium soleil dial and a caseback engraved with the 2011 GT Champion mark. The watch later surfaced NOS with full box and papers, and that listing is the principal published record for the example.

The presentation watch documents a grey-rhodium soleil dial and a caseback engraving on one 116523. It documents that watch and event; it does not establish a general trophy-watch programme or a standard dial branch.

Tiffany & Co. and other co-signed dials

Double-signed Tiffany & Co. dials on the cal 4130 generation appear sporadically at major auction houses. These follow the broader Tiffany-signed Rolex tradition rather than a 116523-specific phenomenon, and the earlier 16523 generation produced more documented examples. No 116523-specific Tiffany lot with a detailed auction record is cited here.

Historical market and auction record

Sotheby's has catalogued the 116523 from launch examples through to late production. The GT Champion watch is included because its engraving and provenance are documented.

Auction and dealer prices vary with case condition, dial, bracelet, papers and venue. The cited sources do not establish a reference-wide discount, price trend or premium for one 116523 dial. The 116503 comparison is primarily a chronology and specification change.
