Rolex Datejust 16000

Datejust 36 → 16000

Steel Rolex Datejust 16000 with a King Khalid Military Academy crest on its silvered dial
Sotheby's, lot 8647: circa-1979 16000 attributed to King Khalid Military Academy.

The 16000 is the stainless-steel, smooth-bezel Datejust in the five-digit generation introduced in 1977. Its flat dial replaced the earlier pie-pan layout, and Cal. 3035 brought a quickset date. It retained an acrylic crystal. Auction records show silvered, blue, Roman-numeral and academy-crest dials. Monaco Legend describes a later-added tiger's-eye dial, and Antiquorum's black-dial entry has an unresolved caliber attribution; the records are examples, not a full factory dial list.

Where it sits in the line

The 16000 replaced the four-digit 1600 as the smooth-bezel steel Datejust. Fratello maps the fluted 1601 to 16014 in steel with a white-gold bezel and to 16013 in two-tone; the engine-turned 1603 became 16030. The five-digit generation flattened the earlier pie-pan dial and introduced Cal. 3035 with quickset date.

The 16200 took over the smooth-bezel steel position in the 162xx generation, which brought a sapphire crystal and Cal. 3135. Fratello dates that change to 1988; the 16000's commonly cited period is therefore about 1977–1988.

Production outline

Fratello and Monochrome date the five-digit Datejust generation from 1977 to 1988. Those dates describe the generation; the exact-reference records here date individual watches circa 1978, 1979, 1981 and 1986.

Several catalogue measurements differ. Sotheby's, Monaco Legend and Hodinkee give 36 mm; Heritage and Anderson & Garland give 35 mm. Luxoris lists 38 mm including the crown. The listings do not state consistent measurement methods, so 36 mm is the usual case size while the other figures remain attached to their lots.

Movement notes

Detailed reference sources identify Rolex Cal. 3035, an automatic date movement with quickset. Fratello describes the change: the crown advances the date without cycling the hour hand through a full day. The usual specification is 27 jewels and 28,800 beats per hour.

Sotheby's, Heritage and Anderson & Garland list 27 jewels. Monaco Legend lists 17 for its tiger's-eye-dial example. Antiquorum's 2022 Hong Kong lot 137 calls a circa-1978 watch Cal. 3135, but publishes no movement photograph. Other detailed 16000 records identify Cal. 3035. Antiquorum's 3135 entry remains unverified against the watch itself. See the Movements guide for the broader caliber history.

Dial map

The catalogues below document individual dial examples; they do not form a complete factory register.

Dial Record What the record establishes
Silvered baton dial Anderson & Garland; Heritage Both catalogues list silvered baton dials. Heritage's listing also conflicts on the bezel description.
Blue dial Luxoris Auctions One blue-dial watch is listed with Cal. 3035 and an acrylic crystal.
Painted Roman numerals Hodinkee Shop archive One 1979 watch is described with punched papers dated 1981. “Buckley” is collector shorthand; the listing alone does not establish original dial fitment.
King Khalid Military Academy crest Sotheby's, lot 8647 One circa-1979 silvered dial carries the academy crest; the auction catalogue attributes the watch to the academy.
Tiger's-eye Monaco Legend, lot 41 The catalogue calls this dial a later addition to a circa-1981 watch.
Black dial with radial markers Antiquorum Hong Kong, lot 137 The catalogue describes a circa-1978 16000 this way, but lists Cal. 3135 and supplies no movement photograph; keep the attribution with the lot.

Sotheby's, lot 8647: academy crest and applied markers.

Sotheby's attributes its academy dial to King Khalid Military Academy. Monaco Legend says its tiger's-eye dial was added later. Antiquorum's black-dial watch has the caliber conflict described above. These records establish individual catalogue descriptions, not factory dial or lume changeovers.

Case, bezel, crystal, and crown notes

The 16000 has a smooth steel bezel, as shown in Sotheby's and Monaco Legend examples. Fratello maps the smooth 1600 to the 16000. Heritage (2018), Antiquorum (2025), Dawsons (2025) and Sworder (2026) have also catalogued fluted-bezel watches as 16000. Antiquorum notes an exchanged caseback on its 2025 lot; these conflicting catalogue descriptions leave no established factory fluted-bezel branch. The five-digit generation retained the acrylic crystal before the 162xx move to sapphire.

Bracelets, clasp, and packaging notes

Sotheby's describes its academy-dial watch on a steel Oyster bracelet; its caseback photograph shows 78360 and 558 markings. Anderson & Garland records another 16000 with 555 end links but does not name the bracelet. Antiquorum's 2022 lot lists a Jubilee 62510H with 555 ends on its purported 16000. Rolex's June 2012 U.S. price list names Oyster 78360/558 and Jubilee 62510/555 combinations for refs. 16000, 16014 and 16030. That list records replacement availability in 2012, not what Rolex supplied with a particular watch when new.

The Hodinkee Shop archive reports punched papers dated 2 April 1981 with one watch dated 1979. Antiquorum lists a fitted box, outer box and pouch with its 1978 lot. These are details of those sale sets, not a reference-wide packaging pattern.

Special branches

Sotheby's attributes one silver-dial watch to King Khalid Military Academy. Monaco Legend records a tiger's-eye dial on another 16000 and explicitly calls it a later addition. Neither record establishes a broader special-production run.
