Rolex Datejust ref. 1603, case 701448, identified by Christie's as made in 1961; photographed with its box and guarantee
Christie's 2016 photograph of ref. 1603, case 701448, made in 1961. The catalogue identifies an engine-turned ribbed bezel and caseback stamp III.61.

Rolex ref. 1603 is a stainless-steel Datejust in the four-digit 1600/1601/1603 series.

Core facts

Detail Evidence
Reference 1603
Family Datejust. Most exact-reference records use this name; one Vintage Rolex Field Manual table also places 1603 under Oysterdate.
Production Factory endpoints remain unsettled; dated examples are summarized below.
Case Stainless steel in the exact-reference examples reviewed. Most catalogues give 36 mm; Christie’s measures case 701448 at 35.5 mm diameter. One Antiquorum entry reports 34.4 mm diameter, 35.5 mm width and 42.6 mm length for a different watch.
Bezel Steel, engine-turned.
Crystal Acrylic, with a Cyclops magnifier over the date on the examples described.
Movement Catalogues identify examples as Cal. 1560, 1560/65 or 1570.
Date setting Slow-set date. Advance it by moving the hands through midnight.
Bracelet Jubilee examples are documented, including ref. 6251H with end links 55 on one 1970 Antiquorum lot. Original bracelet fitment remains a watch-specific question.

Where it sits in the line

The 1600, 1601 and 1603 are four-digit Datejust references, commonly distinguished by smooth, fluted and engine-turned bezels. The Vintage Rolex Field Manual gives this sequence in its Datejust table.

The five-digit 16030 followed in 1977 with Cal. 3035 and a quickset date. The 1603 keeps the earlier slow-set date and acrylic crystal. Monochrome describes the 160xx generation as preceding the sapphire-crystal 162xx generation.

Production outline

Antiquorum's 2006 catalogue gives a 1960–1976 production span. Dated examples in the records run from 1960 through 1974; Christie's also catalogued a Saudi Armed Forces dial around 1978, with a partially masked case number. The circa-1978 attribution extends beyond Antiquorum's stated endpoint; the catalogues do not establish the factory run.

An inside-caseback year dates that case; a clasp code dates the bracelet. Catalogue estimates and guarantee dates apply to the individual examples.

Movement notes

The dated catalogues label examples Cal. 1560, 1560/65 or 1570. Christie's circa-1978 Saudi Armed Forces listing is the outlier: it gives Cal. 1560 with 26 jewels. The auction photos do not show movement engravings.

Cal. 1575 is the date-equipped member of the 1570 family; a 1575 bridge can carry a 1570 stamp. The Movements guide explains why a bridge marking does not identify the complete calibre. The sampled 1603 records do not establish when the calibre changed.

Dial map

Recorded dials include silvered, light-gray, textured and underline examples.

  • Antiquorum's 1960 and Christie's 1961 examples have silvered dials with applied markers. Christie’s circa-1963 listing describes dagger-form numerals.
  • A collector-owned 1603 dated to caseback code II 65 is shown with a sloping-edge “pie-pan” dial, alpha hands and applied markers. The source presents these as details of one watch.
  • Phillips' circa-1973 example has a textured dial. Antiquorum described a light-gray dial with white lettering on its circa-1964 example.
  • Antiquorum's 1974 case 3830515 has a reprinted dial; it records the present finish of that watch.

Christie's assigned a circa-1964 underline dial to ref. 1603. The catalogue calls the bezel fluted and gives no case number to check the attribution against.

Case, bezel, crystal, and crown notes

Antiquorum's 2010 catalogue and Christie's 1961 case 701448 describe engine-turned or engine-turned ribbed bezels. Christie's 2011 and 2016 listings use “fluted.” The Vintage Rolex Field Manual assigns engine-turned to the Datejust and fluted to the Oysterdate, though its tables conflict over the family assignment. The 1974 Antiquorum photo shows deep grooves on case 3830515; the catalogue does not name that bezel.

Most exact-reference catalogues report a 36 mm case. Christie’s gives case 701448 a 35.5 mm diameter; Antiquorum’s circa-1970 lot reports 34.4 mm diameter, 35.5 mm width and 42.6 mm length. Antiquorum does not state its measurement convention.

Antiquorum's 2010 catalogue describes an acrylic crystal with Cyclops, screw-down crown and screw-back Oyster case. The 1974 Antiquorum images show the smooth exterior caseback of case 3830515.

Bracelet, clasp, and packaging notes

Auction catalogues show the 1603 on Jubilee bracelets. Antiquorum's circa-1970 case 2 460 286 is listed with bracelet 6251H and end links 55. The 1974 case 3830515 also appears with a Jubilee bracelet. Phillips records a Jubilee on its circa-1973 watch.

The auction listings document sale configurations for those watches. A Rolex Forums discussion says buyers could choose bracelets separately, but cites no period catalogue. Date boxes and papers to the individual watch rather than the reference.

Special branches

Christie's catalogued one ref. 1603 with a Royal Saudi Arabian Armed Forces emblem dial and described it as made for the force. The catalogue gives no delivery record or issue quantity.
