The Day-Date 40 arrived in 2015 with Cal. 3255. Sotheby’s catalogued this reference in 2016; Christie’s later examples have 2018 and 2019 guarantees.
Movement notes
Rolex specifies Cal. 3255 for the 228396TBR. It has instantaneous day and date changes, rapid-setting, stop-seconds, a Parachrom hairspring and Paraflex shock absorbers. Rolex gives an accuracy range of −2/+2 seconds per day after casing and an approximate 70-hour power reserve. Christie’s and Phillips also identify Cal. 3255 in later examples. Sotheby’s 2016 catalogue does not give a caliber.

The Oyster case is 40 mm and platinum, with a screw-down caseback, Twinlock crown and diamond-set bezel. The sapphire crystal has a Cyclops lens over the date. Rolex rates water resistance to 100 m. Christie’s gives the same case size and metal for its 2018 and 2019 examples.
Bracelets, clasps, and packaging
Rolex pairs the watch with a platinum President bracelet, semi-circular three-piece links and a concealed folding Crownclasp. Christie’s records the bracelet on its 2018 and 2019 examples. Sotheby’s lists a box and papers with its 2016 watch.
Eastern Arabic numerals
SJX’s 2016 report covers ref. M228206-0025 with Eastern Arabic numerals. Christie’s records the same numeral style on 228396TBR case N3R45228 and says Rolex introduced the Arabic Day-Date 40 in 2016 for selected Middle Eastern retailers.
