Where it sits in the line

Christie’s calls the 4767 the first Oyster-cased Dato-Compax and places ref. 5036 after it. Ref. 4768 has the same calendar-chronograph layout in a snap-back case. Refs. 6036 and 6236 carried the day/month windows, pointer date, and three-register layout into the next generation.

Phillips traces the collector nickname “Jean-Claude Killy” to ref. 6236, which it says Killy is believed to have worn.

Production outline

Christie’s describes a four-year run from 1947; Watchlover gives 1947–1951. Auction lots date numbered examples to 1947, circa 1948, and circa 1949.

Christie’s and Sotheby’s each estimate about 200 steel examples.

Movement notes

Phillips identifies Valjoux 72C with 17 jewels in cases 584337 and 584423; Fratello gives the same caliber. Christie’s and Sotheby’s describe other watches as manual or mechanical 17-jewel movements without naming a caliber. Sotheby’s lists its yellow-gold example with a 13-ligne movement.

Antiquorum’s photograph of case 584351 shows “17 Rubis” on the bridge; no caliber engraving is visible.

Dial map

The dial has day and month windows at 12, a central arrow hand for the date, and registers for seconds, elapsed minutes, and elapsed hours. The cited examples include a blue date scale, applied baton and square markers on case 584345, luminous dots and Arabic numerals on case 584337, and a “Mark 1 Roman” dial on case 584366.

Calendar discs appear in English and French. On case 584366, the dial text is French and the discs are English; Christie’s suggests they may have been changed. Christie’s describes the dial on case 584345 as a Rolex replacement.

Case, bezel, crystal, and crown

Auction descriptions show a screw-down caseback and crown, two round chronograph pushers, and separate calendar correctors. Christie’s describes the case as tonneau-shaped.

Christie’s measures case 584345 at 34 mm. Other catalogues give 36 or 37 mm for their examples, so keep each measurement attached to its case number.
