Steel Rolex Oyster Precision ref. 6022 with an Arabic-numeral dial
Steel Oyster Precision ref. 6022, Keys Fine Art lot 381 (2025)

Catalogues document Rolex ref. 6022 Oyster and Oyster Precision watches dated circa 1950–58. They are hand-wound, have no date display, and appear in steel and gold; several catalogues name Cal. 710. The surviving record maps individual examples, with production endpoints and the full variant range still unsettled.

Where it sits in the line

The 6022 sits among the manual-wind Oyster Precisions. Ref. 6082 is another mid-century model in that group; the records leave their sequence open. The 6022 examples show several case materials and dial treatments in a 33–34.5 mm round case.

The number also appears on a later composite watch catalogued as a 4365 movement in a 6022 case. The 4365 article treats that case as a service replacement. That composite is separate from the standalone 6022 watches described here.

Production outline

Tennants dates the Glasgow import mark on case 753745 to 1950. Its catalogue calls the case 9 carat gold and also transcribes a convention mark as “0417-10k.” The catalogue leaves that case's fineness unresolved. Keys Fine Art's 2025 catalogue separately describes a steel example as circa 1950. Other examples carry dates around 1952, 1953, 1954, and 1958, giving a dated-watch window rather than a full production chronology.

Use the 1950 Glasgow import mark as a date for the Tennants case's assay; assembly or sale could have followed later. The serial-number guide explains how to read British import marks alongside other case evidence.

Movement notes

Cal. 710 is the recurring movement attribution on individual watches. Jewel counts vary: several catalogues give 17, while Dorotheum gives 18 for its gold example. Tennants describes its movement as a Patented Superbalance.

Christie's describes another gold 6022 with a manual movement measuring 11½ lignes and 17 jewels. It gives no caliber name and shows no movement photograph. The size differs from the 10½-ligne Cal. 710 family described in the movement guide, so the Christie's description remains a separate, unresolved specimen record.

The 4365/6022 composite carries a 4365 movement. It does not add a second movement to the standalone 6022 record.

Dial map

Catalogues describe silvered or cream dials, applied baton or dagger markers, and Arabic numerals. Tennants' 1950 watch has a silvered dial with Arabic and dagger markers; its condition report says the dial was refinished. A separate circa-1952 steel example has a cream dial, non-luminous markers, dauphine hands, and a blue centre-seconds hand (dealer listing).

Gardiner Houlgate catalogued a black-dial 6022 with baton markers and central seconds around 1958. Some Eaton Quarter Century Club watches carry club wording on the dial and an inscription on the caseback. Waddington's reports that its example's numerals were replaced by “1/4 CENTURY CLUB.”

Case, bezel, crystal, and crown notes

The catalogues describe stainless-steel and gold cases. Gold examples include a Christie's 10K watch, several 14K watches, and Dorotheum's 750-gold watch. Tennants calls case 753745 9 carat, while its catalogue also records “0417-10k”; that case's fineness remains unresolved. The measurements range from 33 mm at Waddington's and Gardiner Houlgate to 34.5 mm in a specialist dealer listing; these are specimen measurements.

A plain bezel appears in the Keys Fine Art photographs and in the separate circa-1952 dealer listing. The catalogues give no reference-wide crystal change or crown specification. Tennants notes that its 1950 watch has a later, non-Rolex crown; this is a condition detail for that lot.

Bracelets, clasps, and packaging

The circa-1952 listing describes a steel 6022 on a Gay Frères 7205 rivet bracelet with 60 end links and dates the bracelet to 1970. Since the watch is circa 1952, this is a later configuration, not evidence of original delivery. A RolexForums seller also described a 7205/67 bracelet as a later addition to one 6022.

The catalogues show examples on leather straps and metal bracelets, and one specialist listing includes a presentation box. These belong to separate watches; the available records do not document a standard package.

The close-up below shows the clasp on that listing's 7205 bracelet. The “70” stamp dates the bracelet, not the watch head.

7205 clasp on a separate 6022 example; the “70” stamp belongs to the bracelet.

T. Eaton Quarter Century Club watches

Several gold ref. 6022 watches are documented as T. Eaton Company Quarter Century Club presentations. Their case engravings and dial text identify individual awards rather than model markings.
