The 6609 is a Datejust with a rotating bezel marked in five-minute divisions. Auction records document 35–36 mm examples in stainless steel, steel with an 18k white-gold bezel, steel and gold, and solid 18k yellow gold. They show several dial types and conflicting caliber attributions. Most dated examples in the records fall in the mid-to-late 1950s.

Where it sits in the line

Rolex introduced the rotating-bezel Turn-O-Graph as the 6202 in 1953. The 6309 preceded the 6609 in the line. The 6609 pairs the Datejust date-and-lens format with a bezel marked for elapsed minutes. Its bezel has five-minute divisions, rather than the finer minute marks found on some earlier Turn-O-Graphs.

Production outline

Most auctioned examples in this sample date to 1956–1958. Christie's and Phillips give a broader 1956–1959 span; Sotheby's and Monaco Legend describe a 1954 introduction and production through 1960. Antiquorum dates case 447272 to circa 1966, while Pergola's unofficial chart places the number in its 1959 band. This is a single late outlier; the sources leave the factory endpoints open.

Movement notes

Sotheby's, Christie's, Monaco Legend and Phillips identify Cal. 1065 in several examples. Christie's and Antiquorum identify Cal. 1066 in others. Phillips lists Cal. 1030 in its 1958 Thunderbirds-emblem example. The lots document individual watches; they leave the caliber sequence unresolved. See the movement guide for the competing labels.

Dial map

Auction photographs and descriptions show silvered, champagne, black gloss and black lacquer dials, with batons, gold darts, applied daggers and spade indexes. Sotheby's describes luminous hands on its 1956 yellow-gold example; Phillips notes aged lume on its steel and white-gold watch. Sotheby's lot 14, Christie's lot 6067485 and three Phillips lots show roulette dates with alternating red and black numerals.

Case, bezel, crystal, and crown notes

Catalogued examples measure 35–36 mm. Materials include stainless steel, steel with an 18k white-gold bezel, two-tone steel and gold, and solid 18k yellow gold. Phillips reports an inner caseback stamp of II.1958 on its steel and white-gold example. The engine-turned or reeded bezel carries five-minute divisions to 60. Sotheby's 2018, Christie's lot 6067485 and Monaco Legend lot 46 describe bidirectional rotation; Sotheby's calls the Serpico y Laino example unidirectional. Check the individual watch because the catalogues disagree.

The Datejust date sits at 3 o'clock under a cyclops lens. Sotheby's 2018 and Monaco Legend lot 46 describe screw-down casebacks; Monaco Legend also records a screw-down crown on its 1957 example.

Bracelets, end links, clasps, and packaging notes

Phillips records the 1958 emblem-dial watch on a Jubilee bracelet stamped 6251H, with end links marked 55 and a clasp stamped 3.71. Antiquorum lists a 62510H bracelet and 555 end links on case 447272, dated circa 1966 in its catalogue, against the 1959 band in Pergola's chart. These lots record the bracelets fitted at sale; original delivery remains unclear. Other records show leather straps and Rolex buckles. The sample has no packaging specific to the 6609.

Special branches

The Thunderbirds emblem appears on two steel watches in the auction sample. Monaco Legend's 1956 lot shows it on the dial and caseback; Phillips' 1958 lot places it at 6 o'clock. Phillips attributes a separate yellow-gold emblem watch to former team member Captain Charles W. Maultsby. Phillips and Monaco Legend describe team-only issue as a belief; neither supplies issue records or a production count.
