The 8171 Padellone and 6062 are Rolex's two vintage automatic calendar moonphase references from the early 1950s. Both show the day, date and month, with running seconds and a moonphase display at 6. The 8171 has a larger case with a snap-on back; the 6062 uses an Oyster case with a screw back. Christie's, 8171 case 902514; 6062 case 916321

The movements are different despite the shared calendar layout. Both have four recessed correctors in the case band. Super Oyster and Twinlock crowns occur on the 6062; its screw-back construction does not mean that every example has the same crown. Mondani, 2020; Christie's, 6062 overview

The production cutoff is less settled than the introduction date. Christie's describes a roughly ten-year run for the 6062 in its overview of case 788629, while Hodinkee gives 1950–1953. The reference pages retain those differing dates alongside individual examples. Christie's, case 788629; Hodinkee, 2023

Padellone and Stelline

Padellone, “big frying pan,” is the 8171's collector nickname. Stelline, “little stars,” describes a 6062 dial with star-shaped hour markers. A 6062 with Arabic numerals or a black diamond-marker dial is a different configuration. Fratello, 2024; Hodinkee, 2023

For identification, compare the case construction first, then the dial layout and movement. A strap or bracelet is less conclusive: Ben Clymer's steel 8171, sold by Phillips in 2024, wore a Gay Frères bracelet he had added after buying the watch. Phillips, lot 33

The name in 2026

Rolex announced the Perpetual Padellone on 15 September 2026 and explicitly named the 8171 as the source of its name. The new watch belongs to the Perpetual collection. It has a 39 mm case in Everose gold or platinum and uses caliber 7190 with an annual calendar. Rolex, announcement; model description

Its calendar mechanism distinguishes 30-day from 31-day months. The dial has day and month windows at 12, a pointer date and a moonphase display at 6. Rolex, calendar description
